Need a new clutch? which one?

Recommended Posts

It has become apparent that the clutch currently in my car is not going to last under the current power output. I beleive it is full face organic.

I plan to replace this, however i am a bit baffled as to which would be better.......

1. 5 puck ceramic, sprung centre single plate?

2. twin plate ceramic?

3. or if the current clutch is simply worn from use in Japan and will do the job with a reco....then just reco?

How streetable is option 1? I would prefer to go for a ceramic as it will put up with more abuse than the organic, but also need it to be completely streetable.

thanks for your help

What sort of power are we talking about and do you use the car on the strip or in traffic?

How much of a nasty clutch can you put up with?

We need more info.

That said. OS Giken twin plate will probably fit the bill but cost a small fortune. They are a good clutch though with good drivability and excellent clamping force without massive pedal effort.

I am running about 280 rwhp out of rb20 in a cefiro, the vehicle needs to be able to be easily street driven, whilst still put up with attending drift meets at qld raceway.

I would prefer to avoid running a twin or triple plate simply due to the high purchase costs and high re-co costs.

having spoken to a few people, it seems the best options are re-co the current clutch OR replace it with 5 puck ceramic............problem is.....Which one????

You can reco the current pressure plate with a heavier spring and replace the friction plate.

Problem is that a button clutch, even a sprung centre will be a bitch to drive in traffic and a full face organic will die quite quickly at your current power levels and when used for drift, particularly if your fond of popping the clutch to get the rears spinning.

Have a look at www.xclutch.com.au for a few more options as in your situation i'd be looking at using a multi button for better drivability with the added bite that a button would give.

    • I honestly wouldn’t bother with this. They don’t hold up under any serious strain. Get the Blackline (Chinese fake Quaife) if anything, as it’s reported to perform pretty well.
    • For future reference, I believe all that Amayama does is act as a middleman between you and Nissan. Go to your local dealership, ask nicely for a parts account (I get 15% off with mine) and you'll get better pricing. Cheers,
    • Hi guys, I have a 2005 V35 skyline with the vq35de.  It is a drift car and has been stripped, its now running a standalone ECU and a body harness. Dash everything has been changed to a digital dash controlled by ecu.  The vq35de has been great, very reliable but wanting more HP atm the 35de is making 228rwhp. I'd like to be making about 350rwhp. From my research it looks like a vq25det lightly modified could be a good engine to swap in. I understand the CD trans will bolt up right to the vq25det with a 35de sump used.  My only issue is a wiring harness/ecu to control the vq25det, from what i've found the ecu is a lot different to the vq35de so my plugin for the 35de will not work. Is there any potential to use the vq35de wiring harness and modify as necessary to retain the plugin ecu?  Keen to hear what you guys think, or am I best off to chuck on a cheap turbo kit on the 35de and see how long it lasts.
    • Oh sorry Justin! I was racking my brain trying to remember names, not sure why I associated “Adam” with 7tune! I’m good, been away from Skylines for over a decade, got family and kids now. Just getting back into owning a 32 but it’s a whole different world now… tax is higher and tech is better.
    • Who's Adam? Hehe 😁All good mate, it's Justin. Been good! And you? The HCR32 is looking sweet by the way! Love the very neat Nav install.  I would love to get one but I'm at a crossroads right now and can't commit to another car.
