Battery earth cable going funky

Noticed my battery earth cable starting to corrode or something, not sure why. See pic

What would cause this?

I removed the oe cable because it didnt go tight enough around the terminal a few months ago with a cable from supercheap, dont recall the oe cable doing this. Battery's a Optima maybe 2 yrs old, i believe is healthy.

Any helps will be appreciated

Original one was probably plated.

Clean that with a paste of sodium bicarbonate and an old toothbrush. Then once it is clean and reassembled, give it a good coating with some battery terminal protection spray.

Or go old school and cheap, use a coat of petroleum jelly.

battery could be overfilled and leaking acid. or alternator overcharging, check that too
