Hi all, so I tried to install my new pioneer reverse camera into my head unit which is also pioneer and as per the photos, I used twisted the red wire (which is the 12 volt one) with the purple reverse wire where I snipped off the metal end and wrapped some tape around both wires before soldering it to see if I could get a signal, I also got some sand paper and scratched a metal part behind the head unit and just put some tape over it so it grounds before soldering it, but it isn't showing any signal. Where did I go wrong?

 

Worth noting, the purple wire looks like copper and the red wire looks like just regular metal? In the photo you can also see the yellow and brown rca connected and on the tag it says "rear review camera in" which I joined together and connected one end on the back of the head unit. One small question, that metal part where the black wire is sitting, will that rust because it's bare metal now?

I just had some trouble with this myself with a different unit. Couple of questions

What is the wiring meant to be; is there a diagram you can post?

What is the problem, does the head unit not switch to reverse when you put it in reverse?

What were you trying to do with the red and purple wires?

Your ground will develop surface rust pretty quickly but it won't stop it working. You will need to mount your ground properly but I assume you are still testing for now. Simply run a self tapper into that steel dashboard support and put an eyelet to suit on the ground

What were you trying to do with the red and purple wires? - I twisted them together so the camera knows I'm in reverse gear. The purple wire is the reverse wire, and the red wire is the 12v+ wire. I got told I needed to put them together.

I was trying to solder my connection on that part before but was unable to. So might look for an easier place to ground it.

Did you solder a bare wire to bare steel? Crazy. Do as @Duncan said. Even better, there's already a bolted connection right there that you could slip a eyelet under.

 

As to the copper wire / plain wire question.....the silver coloured wire will be tinned/plated copper. Still copper underneath.

That was what I was trying to do lol. Is the way I tried to do it dangerous or?

So would I get an eyelet and put the bare wire underneath it and the force of the screw would weigh it down?

OK....I guess maybe you haven't done much wiring before. Grab a cheap set like this:

Use one with an eyelet end on the ground wire, and either drill a self tapping screw into the steel dash support to hold it or as GTSBoy said, undo the nut that is holding the plastic part on and slip the eyelet under that, it will be held tight like a washer. Soldering wire to something big and heavy like the dash support is unlikely to work long (if at all). That might be your only problem

While you are at your preferred auto parts shop buying the crimp set, buy a cheap multimeter like this:

Turn it to 12v DC mode, put the black probe on your earth and the red probe on the reverse signal wire from the car, you should have 0v. Put the car in reverse with ignition on and you should have 12v. If you don't, your reverse signal is not OK (either the earth or the reverse signal itself)

hmm on third thoughts, that wiring diagram really might help

Is the red wire only connected to your reverse camera's wire, and is the purple wire only from your head unit?  Is there any connection at the camera end of the reverse camera?

You will need to find a reverse signal from the car. That is often at the reverse camera where you can tap into the reverse light. Alternatively if your dash has a reverse signal (eg auto dash) you can find and tap into that. Otherwise you have to find it in the wiring loom somewhere which may not be easy

Yep the red wire is only connected the the purple reverse wire (which comes from the plug and play cable behind the head unit. There is a connector end on the camera end as per the diagram I sent above.

Ah ok, I didn't realize that, thanks for letting me know. I thought ground was just for discharging extra electricity. I'll try again with the recommendations above. With the 12v wire I believe that's only for when the gear is in reverse so I guess it should work without it? I thought the power cable is that one that attached into the head unit.

So the RCA is of course the video signal cable. The 12V and earth wires associated with the camera itself are meant to be connected all the time (by the looks of that wiring diagram).

I am guessing that you are supposed to provide a signal from the gearbox's reverse switch to the head unit so that it knows that you're in reverse. I have no idea which wires you have shown us are these. Where is the purple wire from? The head unit? Where is the red wire from? The camera, or the car's 12V supply?

From what I can gather, you will need to do as I said above. Camera gets power and earth all the time (switched from ignition, of course). Head unit reverse wire gets a signal from the cold side of the reverse switch. That's it.

Well, you are right, the information in the manual is junk. I think it is saying the camera wiring has 3 parts - the yellow video output, a red 12v+ wire and a black earth wire, is that correct? 

For testing, you can just hold the stripped end of the black wire against that steel dash frame.

If the purple wire only comes from the head unit, it is probably reverse camera 12v+. They would do this because that lets you either turn the camera on manually (through some button in the head unit) or automatically (when you put the car in reverse).  If it works this way there would only be 1 power wire to the camera from the head unit.

For the automatic part to work, the head unit needs to know when the car is in reverse.  As that might not be part of the camera, you need to check if the head unit wiring has a reverse signal input. Do you have a wiring diagram for the head unit?

What is the model code of the head unit and camera?

The purple wire is from the headunit cable that is connected to the head unit. The red wire is from the camera.

What is the model code of the head unit and camera?

I'll need to check for the manual if there is one for the head unit, but I believe you are correct about the 3 parts. I just tried again to wire my car in the meantime, and i found a better access point below. Just used the tools that I have. Still no luck.

 

Model of the double din is a pioneer a4450bt.

Camera is a pioneer RCAMAVIC 

the image with purple and red joined together, i taped it but untaped it for the image. I found a better ground as you can see in the image, though I didn't fasten it down as I don't have a hex key but it's decently firm in there. and the black wire on its own photo is the ground and the sort of connector that I used. I put a washer inbetween the frame and the bolt.

OK, per the head unit manual

You need to connect the "violet/white" wire to a reverse signal in the car. You haven't mentioned how you connected the rest of the head unit to the car (or maybe someone else did that already), but I can see ISO connectors in the background of some of your pics so maybe you have a car to ISO harness and a ISO to pioneer harness.  ISO connectors cover the speakers and a few power supply items, but they don't carry a reverse signal from the car.

You can see there is no reverse signal in those plugs from the car to the head unit, so your head unit does not know when the car is in reverse, so it can't turn the camera on.

So, the head unit will not switch to reverse camera automatically until you find a reverse 12V inside the car, and connect it to that purple wire. As I said earlier the easiest place to find that is at the tail lights (but then you need to run another wire all the way to the head unit) or maybe at the dash if you have a reverse indicator light or maybe a signal to a reverse beeper. I think you will have trouble finding that unless someone has specific advice.

Then, this is the instructions for the reverse camera from the head unit manual:

You can see that this generic instruction do not show you how to wire the ground and red (12v) that come with your camera. So, to get this to work you need to earth the black (per your picture) and supply ACC or IGN 12v to the red wire. Per the ISO wiring picture above, A7 is 12v switched (probably ACC), so you need to splice the red from your camera into the wire at that pin.

But, I think you need to either give this to a professional, or get a crimper set and spend some youtube time.  If you don't make the connections securely you can get failure over time including burning your car to the ground.

I should add, you probably need to earth the green wire (9) from the head unit too (you can use the same place as the camera) if you want to be able to have video while the handbrake is off.

I'll take a look at that and look it in more depth. As always I really appreciate all the effort you put to help me. Also yeah i do have the ISO harness along with another that is specific for my car. You to @GTSBoy

I ended up getting some pro to do it, he ended up running a reverse wire to the tail light, but did a lot of the same config that I did. So I'm mind boggled. Will dissect the wiring later see what's different.

    • Must have been an absolute nightmare to drive when the power steer was out, the rack ratio/wheel size/caster is all set up for power assistance

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA
