As we all know petrol prices are phuckin ridiculous at the moment, especially if ur driving imports cars and the like. My question is which premium unleaded petrol is best to use here in PERTH, Caltex Vortex or Shell Premium Unleaded?

And don't say use BP Ultimate...! :D

if ur running the stock ecu shell premium will do u fine, its 96 RON. its even better if u shop at coles as u get 4c off per litre :D

caltex vortex is 95 RON and has an injector cleaner in it. it make my car ping with stock ecu stay away from it.

Gull's premium unleaded is suppose to be 98 RON, but i haven't used it yet.

that said if you have an afterward ecu or major mods i would only use bp ultimate 98.

As you prolly know - BP Ultimate is only made in Kwinnana and distributed Australia wide (kinda sh1tza when it's cheaper in Sydney than Perth doesn't it). I suspect that it is also sold under another brand, but have never had this confirmed.

For this reason alone, it should be the freshest fuel providing you buy from a popular station.

Paul, that reminds me - make sure they drain my fuel and change the fuel filter before firing up the new donk- that crap's been sitting in my tank for 8 months now!

Gull gets the dregs of the other fuel companies, kind of the crud that's left over from all of the crude oils

Caltex Vortex is 97RON though, but yeah has cleaner in it

Caltex = 95 RON, then 97 RON, Gull's supposedly 98 RON, Shell's 96 RON, who's right!?!?!? I have no idea who to follow (I'm using BP Ultimate as well by the way) :P

My car's been smooth since i switched to Ultimate 98 several months back...

i can confirm that shell premium is 96octane

(i know this coz i work there :P )

dunno bout the rest

i only fill mine with shell wen im desperate or the price is really low, plus i get my 4c a litre (which works out 2 about $1.50 off :) ) otherwise i use ultimate

I ran vortex for 20 months with no problems at all, this was at 12psi

i guess its all about seeing what works the best, i used caltex because i had a fuelcard there, and got it free from work, then i just stuck with it as theres no BP's on the way to work.

thanx for the replies guys, apparently and sadly my line is a *cough* n/a *cough* but yea never use normal unleaded but, always use premiums at least, ok just checked their websites and shell is 96RON and vortex is 95. But the thing is i think i always gets more kms from using vortex, no noticable difference in terms of performance though. and yea i kinda mix the 2 together sometimes, i hope thats ok?

Hi Guys. There is another thread going in the General Automotive about different fuels at the moment. I just left a message on that to direct people to the thread below from back in May. There is a fair amount of discussion in it, but some quite informed views. The main thing to note for us in Perth is that every last drop of fuel that you buy in Perth originates in BP Kwinana. Shell, Caltex and everyone else buy the raw 95 ron Premium off BP and add their own soup to it to make it theirs. Shell claim their standard premium is 96 ron, but they are starting from a 95 ron basic fuel, bought from BP. So anything else that they gain in octane rating is achieved through additives.

BP Ultimate is the only thing to use!

Here's that thread:

Cheers.

    • What are you doing with the car? Drags, sprints, racing? A decent upgrade of dba 4000 rotors, good quality pads (endless, project mu, intima are all I have used), quality fluid and braided lines. All have held up to multiple big track days and street duties. No need for big fancy kits as some also require significant energy to come upto operating temp. Look at 350z caliper and rotor upgrade too.  @Dose Pipe Sutututu comment on them and did a good write up.
    • I've driven that one and it's a great deal and drives nice. The owner definitely treats it right on track. You would have gotten it for what you paid for this one too.   Keen to see what you do to this one.
    • I have a question with regards to R34 GTR guards. All the info here is quite old. Useful, but old. At what point does the bumper itself become a clearance issue with wide wheels on a R34 GTR, specifically the part I've drawn in red here: All of the info that people post about implies that 285 is as far as you'd go before scrubbing becomes an issue, but they speak of hitting the inner plastic liners, not the bumper itself. Just how wide could you go if you took the liners out? Has anyone done it? I have been messing with my own car and spacers and heavily cursed my lack of planning, but I might not feel so bad if there's actually no gains to be had by going a GTR guard and front bar combination for $5k+ of money I do not have after spending about that much already on my solution which now has problems. (Woo) At least I now know why GTR guards and bumpers flare out like this over their GTT lesser cousins. I feel that in 2024, someone has gone further and attempted to run 315's or somesuch on the front of a R34 GTR. If you have, please post. If you're tried and failed for some other reason definitely post so I feel better about my mistakes
    • Genuine URAS Type R front guards in FRP. These will fit a GTT. They will only fit a GTT. If you have a GT or GTT and want wider fenders with a Z tune look up top, this is what you want. You use this with a regular GTT fitment bar. Not a GTR bar. They fit GTT guard liners and plastics, not GTR items. So if you're reading this thinking "Ah! I have a GTT or GT and want wider front guards that bolt directly on, but do not want the hassle of changing my bonnet and bumper and plastics and undertrays or anything else, this is what you want. The fitment is annoyingly perfect. I really would rather someone pick these up in person and not ship them. SE Melb.
