I've been told that CA18DET gearboxes and RB20DET gearboxes are similar and match up with no probs, and apparently SR20DET gearboxes do too with minimal modification.

Which got me curious... can one take a 6 speed gearbox off an S15 Turbo (Type R whatever you wanna call it) and chuck it in an R32?

Also how well does it mate up with an RB25DET (sicne I'm doin an engine swap anyways).

Also how's the reliability of an S15 6 speed gearbox? I've been led to believe that at over 400hp it shits itself... I'm looking at around the 375 to 430hp range once my pet project is done, so this is important.

yeah, the 6 speeds are meant to be dodgier.. Some of the S15 guys actually go for the older s14 5speed boxes when the new ones die.

also: I seem to remember reading that the 6speed wasn't fantastic as the ratios weren't that suited either. Some of the gear changes were especially too short (hmm rex there too..lol)

i think the box is very good, but yes it is weak compare to other nissan gearbox.

ratios is nice, when u drive up the hill it's a lot better than my R33

go for nismo S15 6 speed then

around $5000

not hell lot more than a R34 Gear box but u got 6 speed

If you are planning on fitting a 6 speed from an S15 don't put in a massive twin plate clutch or anything stupid like that. This is the major contributor to failed gearboxes in S15's.

There are many 12 second S15's still running the factory box with no problems and with 250rwkw over at www.nissansilvia.com.

The 3rd gear ratio is fantastic. This is the gear I beat my 2 friends who own R33's. :D

$5000 for a nismo box when a supra 6 speed box made by getrag is around the same price... i'm thinking budget 6 speed here...

also when building up the car I'm aiming for more than 250rwkw. which will be a lot more at the fly and hence the stress on the gearbox as well. So using appropriate clutches etc, what's the max you guys reckon a 6 speed S15 box can handle?

Any other budget alternatives?

i know its not what you are after but i have to correct earlier info that might mislead!!! the pull type r33 gtr boxes are the weakest in the gtr rb series by a long shot as nissan tried to correct problems that where in the r32 boxes but overcompensated and made themselves a whole set of new problems, the series 3 box is better but still no where near as good as the six speeds in japan are holding up to 10 second gtrs and they are getting reliabilty!!!

I recall there was a thread about this a while ago (I was thinking the same thing because I was doing a fair amount of highway driving). The main issue was that the S15 box wouldn't be able to cope with the torque of the RB20...but I've been reading a lot recently that the SR20 makes more torque than the RB20...now I'm confused.

I think it goes like this...

R32 - both GTS and GTR are good strong designs. The RB20 box has a weakness at very high power but you have to get the RB20 to produce 250kW+ first.

R33 - not much problem at all. The RB25 is a just a RB26 box with the front output cut off. "Weaknesses" are that it's a big fat bastard (you'll see if you have a RB25 next to an RB20 box). The Series III R33 GT-R is supposed to have the strongest internals.

R34 - same as the R33 except the Getrag six speed has some problems very well documented on this forum.

S13 - ok box, good design.

S14 - got a bit better, bit stronger.

S15 - six speed is weak compared to the relatively strong Nissan reputation. It's also another big fat bastard.

You must admit that for drivelines strength, Nissan have a good rep. and we've all been lucky. That's why we drive them. Not as a good as Toyota boxes IMO but close enough.

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
