Just checked with Virgin Blue - I could have flown return to NZ from Adelaide for $224.80 each way and probably claimed the sideskirts as part of my luggage.

Can anyone with experience importing confirm these figures, or am I just getting screwed.

4door_Sleeper,

According to your breakdown, the Tax component (duty + GST) is only $122.75

The rest is made up of all sorts of charges, which I wouldn't know whether they are legitimate or fair.

It certainly looks like you are being taken for a ride though.

so the $14000 tax they took from my pay this year isnt enuff? if the country needs money for stuff why spend millions on the olympic athlets etc? so bigfoot can win medals for us?

i dont mind paying tax, but when it goes to useless crap it shits me. and theres nothing we can do, so no point in crying about it....

steve

well be thankful your not dodging bombs.....there is worse countries than this place...some people cant even afford to put food in there mouths or shoes on there feet in other countries....and its not there choice to be like that...be thankful for what you have...

I agree it grates when taxes are spent on useless crap, like that $3 tax rebate the government gave us. Woo... three whole bucks.

But there is something you can do: vote for someone that has policies you care about. This is after all a democracy, and even if the person/party doesn't win, at least you have shown your opposition to the status quo and your support for the other person/party.

:P

LW.

Problem is that there are so many "I will always vote for x" that it'll pretty much always be a Labour/Liberal-run country. Pity, because both parties are full of absolute c0ckmasters.

Those taxes go towards checking out your stuff to make sure your "stuff" isn't bring in any extras.

For example drugs... Bombs... some other crap people don't know about...

Also pays for the wharfs or airport fees etc, as you seem to have had them brought in via air, you get charged extra for that, but you just save time.

Sea is cheaper but takes longer to get to you.

A legal way to get around it would be to claim they are a gift to you from someone else, if you can get them to ok it, you don't pay for any customs or import duties, but I'm not sure what the limits are, also only ment to do it 1-2 times a year.

Other wise just pay the money.

I just got some stuff sent over from Hong Kong also, and on the customs declaration the company marked it as a gift, which seems to work good.

4 door sleeper you can get in contact with customs and tell them the skirts were sent to you as a sample, which does not have any import tax associated with it, and get that $400 back which is BS for 2 bits of fiberglass.

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
