Gday,

Just wondering if in NSW you are required to have a muffler?

My import will most likely have a straight through. I will be putting a high flow cat on it but if I don't need a muffler I won't get one.

Assuming it's not loud enough to attract attention, and other than noise pollution requirements, is there any legal thing about not having a muffler? EPA or other?

Thanks.

That's true.

Thing is I know someone with a straight through and it wasn't that loud.

My 351 straight through wasn't loud either.

I'm just worried about the environment and I can take care of my ears.. things is it's not that loud.

Anyway - in the end I'd like my car to be totally legal and engineered thats why i asked.. i was kinda hoping not to have a muffler.. I just didn't realise you need resonator as well.. this is getting expensive.

Back to hunting for that kakimoto straight thru!!!!

go nuts man. its only illegal if u get caught.. dont drive like a shit to attract the attention and u'll be fine.

friend of mine has lasted a week so far with a apexi super cat into a twin 3inch system straight out the back .. its loud as hell.

and i run a hi flow 3inch cat and one redback muffler.. cops dont even look at me twice

ive had a blitz nur, and even with a 2.5inch cat and the silincer in it, it still registered at 100dB. after 5 minutes of driving with no silincer, i would always get a bad head ache.

like cerial killer said, theres no point doing something so blatently illegal for a small gain. just install a good brand exhaust and be done with it.

Ive got some jap exhaust with custom piping wth no resonator. It really sucks. Since im driving in sydney, 90% of the time im stuck in traffic, or at slow speeds which = cabin drone!

Its louder than my friends s15 with Apexi N1 exhaust...

Im getting a middle muffler (resonator?) put in this week

but its wierd, after 3500rpm, the exhaust loses its drone and sounds pretty good

yeah i hear ya.. i hate that low rpm drone.

Funny thing is i have a mate with rb20 straight through .. sounds sweet - quiet as and sounds deep and quiet at low rev, gurgly thick mid and with that little bit of RB raspiness in high.. really nice...

I also have a mate with a rb20 with kakimoto cat back (don't know about the front pipe) with cat, resonator and muffler it sounds just as good if not better.. has that nice touch of kakimoto muffler (love that sound)....

who knows!

I hope kaki's flow well - that's what ima have to pick up methinks.

my exhaust is 3" from turbo back. Hi-flow cat, the cat back has no resonator. It's not overly loud idling but become really droney between 2K-3Krpm which is where you do majority of your driving (if it's a street car). Very annoying. The EPA test is done at about 4,500rpm from there it's not that loud - I think about the same as the engine. What exhaust do you currently run?

Cereal - currently my exhaust is about 2cm thick going to a 2.1cm oval shaped tip. It's made by opel sports.. err i mean the barina is sick.

The car I asked was the one on the boat which is straight through. -=> I don't wanna kill trees and kill our planet.. I take long enough showers as is so I wanted to know what the dillyo.

Guess I'm gonna have to call justjap every 2 weeks till a kakimoto cat back comes up.

Suggest any other places likely to have one?

    • I refreshed the OEM injectors with the kit and connected it up. It now ideals okay even with the IACV removed. Driving still has the same cutoff issue like the 550cc injectors so the issue is somewhere else. I bought FPG's Fuel Pump Hanger. I will be installing it next, but it is not as straightforward as I thought it was with my limited wiring knowledge and no instruction on the specific model I purchased (FPG-089). I also got the incorrect billet clamp as I could not find info on the OEM sizing.

    • No. Turbo shuffle and surge/flutter are not the same thing. Specifically, on a GTR, turbo shuffle has a definite meaning. On a GTR, the twin turbos are assumed to be the same thing and to operate the same way, exactly. In reality, they do not. Their exhaust sides are fed and exhaust a little differently, to each other. Their inlet sides are fed and exhausted a little differently, to each other. Consequently, when they are "working" they are often at slightly different points on the compressor map compared to each other. What this means, particularly when coming on boost, is that one of them will spool up and start producing extra flow compared to the other, which will put back pressure on that other compressor, which will push the operating point on that other compressor up (vertically). This will generally result in it bumping up against the surge line on the map, but even if it doesn't, it upsets the compressor and you get this surging shuffle back and forth between them That is "turbo shuffle" on a GTR. It is related to other flutter effects heard on other turbo systems, but it is a particular feature of the somewhat crappy outlet piping arrangement on RB26s. There are plenty of mods that have been attempted with varying levels of success. People have ground out and/or welded more material into the twin turbo pipe to try to prevent it. Extending the divider inside it works, removing material doesn't. There are aftermarket replacement twin turbo pipes available, and these exist pretty mush purely because of this shuffle problem.
    • You can temporarily* use lock collars to keep it in place until you can do the bushes, back the nuts off, slide them in, snug back up. *temporarily is often for ever
    • Thanks for the quick reply. To be clear, when you say turbo shuffle do you mean turbo flutter "stustustu" or referring to something else? I had thought they were the same thing. When I wrote the post my intention was to say it wasn't a flutter/compression surge sound. My understanding was that a flutter sound would be occurring when throttle is released, whereas I can keep the throttle in the same position for this noise
