A few question on a 15yr old car coming...

Hello,

Have a 15 yr old nissan comin soon (hopefully) and am currently at the stage of waiting for the import approval from dotars. Just have a few questions:

1) The aircon gass from what I can gathered need the filler valve, the receiver drier to be removed and the R12 gas evacuated. How much would it approx. cost to replace the filler valve, receiver drier and the re-gas? Are the filler valve and receiver drier items universal as well?

2) I am located in Gold Coast, but the car will arrive to Brisbane so if anyone have any suggestion where to get 1) done as well would be great. :P

3) How has the recent import approval been? is it still taking ages? My application was put through on the 16th and not sure how long should I really be expecting at this present time.

PS. Was thinking this would be the most appropriate section to post this new thread, if its not then please move it to the correct section for me.. Apologies in advance if I made this mistake.

hey mate, i heard what happened to your old car ;) Yeah, i'm importing another myself.

1) the aircon thing has to be in japan - but if you are importing just 1 car for personal use its fine now with changed rules.

2) see above

3) I put mine in September 1st for september car, and still waiting. My credit card has been charged the $50 for the approval on Friday or so. Apparently this is a sign it has been processed and will be on its way very shortly. Each day i keep checking the letter box all bright eyed, but it hasn't came :) It should be on a boat in a week or two - the idea is that the paperwork and the car cross over.. so hopefully this works out.

good luck with it :P hope it works out well for you. Seems to be going ok for me at the moment.

Hrmm.. too late.. all these were dealt with by my importer and the application was submitted using a business name.. And the dryer and valve has been removed.. so I will have to have it replaced here.. So will need some comments on question 1 and 2 would be greatly appreciated. :P

As to the approval.. Just got word that its approved. Was submitted on the 16th and was approved yesterday. Now just waiting for the next available boat. :)

predator: GDay.. yeah well.. not much I could have done.. *shrug*

I was speaking to an aircon specialist this morning and I'm looking at around $250 to convert my car to R134a gas when it gets here, so that should give you a guide.

I'm in Melbourne so can't help with the second part.

Do you happen to know if the replacement parts is all universal items or nissan and car specific? :D

They will be universal parts - receiver/driver, filler/service valves, etc. If hoses are required they'll just make them up (or they should if they're any good), and any o-rings or seals required should be readily available aftermarket. Of course, this assumes that the system is still working and you don't have any major parts stuffed/broken....obviously if the compressor is knackered you'd be up for quite a bit more.

Anyway, if your asked for anything more than a few hundred to do the job on an already working system I'd be asking some serious Q's and looking at getting a second opinion.
