Hey Skliner's,

Like I said, I thought I was doing the right thing, but, nup!!

I've lost the 'very top RPM end' part of accelerating, you know, that bit where you go "faaaaark", all due to my AFM continually getting soaked by my stupid "'over-oiling" of the filter media.

Every 2 days I'm wringing out more oil from the foam and cleaning the AFM of that goo. Power is instantly restored, only, the same 'operation' has to be repeated 1.5 to 2 days later, to get that performance back!

Can I use turps or something to clean the actual oil back off my filter? (Cousins dishwashing liquid don't work on it!!)

Secondly, where can I by a new TRUST filter for my pod, I may well have stuffed this one up!...I just hope the AFM doesn't mind over cleaning with C.O Cleaner!!?? anyways.....

Any experiences/knowledge on where I can find a new Trust foam pad/brain, pls reply?

oiled pods are a stupid idea.. Don't really know what they are thinking - must be because they have a thing against AFM's. "Self cleaning" my ass..

go get a decent non-oiled type such as the Blitz LM.. or HKS. You'll never experience that problem again.

mark the best place that actually has the foam in stock for trust filters is EvoR in clayton it will end up costing about $60 bucks i think. evo r are a bit expensive than other places but i would say 80% they have one in stock atm if not it dosent take them long to get one in.

Also with foam pods they come pre oiled from the factory with a very light film of oil. When i had a trust airinx (big yellow one) after cleaning it i very lightly oiled it, with a light mist of oil and it was fine.

Cleaning you air flow meter is easy try some electrical contact cleaner from dick smith electronics and it will be like brand new.

I agree oiled pods are stupid. You should get an A'pexi they are the best.

Honestly the apexi pods are good when new, but i honestly doubt how well they flow after 10,000km or even 20,000km. My 2 cents.

i dont think pod filters should be re-used or 'cleaned' at all, i believe in replacing the whole pod once every XXXXXkm depending on how dirty it is, much like oil filters etc. Apexi would have to be the best filter as its non oiled, provides little restriction and filters better then any other (this has been tested on many sites). If you must go oiled then K&N would be the best bet because at least they attempt to filter the air...

Yeah, I hear you all. Great advice, but, my car came thru imports just prior to all these new mod rules (anti-mod rules) and the car came to me with stacks of jap mods on it...some of which I'm still discovering........

No money was spared by the previous owner on my car, and the young Japanese girl who owned it, (or her friends) thought the Trust Pod that is currently on the car was the best thing for it!! Until I stuffed around with it. Tonite I reset the electronics (batt disconnect) wrang out the filter media and CO spray cleaned the AFM again, and it actually is sounding and going fantastic (faaark factor is back plus some!!) As you guys suggest, I'll go for a non-oiled filter next, after all, I'm not a flippin' rally car driver!!

I'm 99% sure the Trust Airinx is a non-oiled pod filter. In fact, I remember when I was researching which pod to get, that was one of the reasons I chose it.

Maybe they changed it or I REALLY stuffed up and never oiled it :mad:

oooops! Maybe I just got some crummy advice on oiling this thing in the first place!!? (thanks Autobarn!!)

You can use degreaser [aerated kero] and then wash out with a hose in water. Blow dry or air dry for a day or so, and 'viola, ze air filter she ez clean'. Do it all the time, they are made to be reused. Then you buy a priority brand air filter element oil and spray or tip approx. two tablespoons of oil onto the clean and dry filter and work it through the whole element. You should have nil excess. The oil is important, it traps the fine dust particles that the foam cannot filter out. Best hint is to clean the element regularly [<5000km]. If you have oil leaving the filter, you have used too much. The oil has to be throughout the filter, but not able to be squeezed out at all.

These same principle filters are used everywhere [motorcycles, dozers, scrapers, trucks, 4wd, and cars]. They are a good product and work extremely well however they are open to abuse and neglect. They do take some learning skills for the novice. They breath freely, filter very well, and give years of fault free low cost service. They DO NOT impede performance [they actually have superior breathing capability to many std filters].

Another reason for the filter being oiled is as a fire retardant for backfires etc, a non oiled filter will catch alight and burn [especially if there is fuel spitting back through the carby]. This reason is probably not so relevant for turbo vehicles, but is essential for motorcycles [i saw a m/c burn almost to the ground with a backfire and airfilter incident out on the roadside, no fire extinguisher, no water].

I run a HKS pod in the skyline, a foam Unifilter in the Hilux, a foam K&N in the TBS motorcycle, and a custom foam filter in my other TSS m/c [both road bikes], and they are all serviced and oiled as above with nil probs.

    • Mixing things up - installed some leather recaros to match the leather seat covered rear seats. Interior looks pretty schmick now except for some slight wear on the steering wheel which I will monitor and address if it becomes worse or actually noticeable!

    • I'm normally copping my own abuse from neglecting my daily drivers. "Those suspension bushes will last a bit more", "Don't worry about the oil leak, just keep topping it up". The project cars I'm always doing things slowly on them as I'm wanting them to be done better, and neater, and nicer. Luckily I don't have to deal with 18 year old Matt's "Learning to wire" stuff in the project cars. And there's only one piece of wiring I'm displeased about in the Landcruiser, and it's about to be cut out... However, the box loads of parts that have been going through this place lately for the Landcruiser... Brake pads Brake Rotors Full handbrake overhaul Wheel Bearings Seals Swivel hubs Steering Boxes Half the suspension joints Shocks Air bags (Ones to go in the rear springs for towing) Water pump Timing kit Lower timing case Harmonic Balancer Radiator Lots of other little seals and shits Gas struts for the bonnet New power window switches And god knows what else I've forgotten... Ha ha ha I have my fingers crossed the pinion seals don't start leaking on the diffs, that the transfer case doesn't leak, and the gearbox input shaft doesn't leak, nor the rear main seal. As they're about the only seals I haven't replaced in the driveline! I'm seriously eyeing off buying new caliper rebuild kits front and rear brake calipers... I'll probably recheck all the valve clearances soon too, and hopefully, it should be all good and sweet to haul some long distance trips again!
    • Every time I pull my 3x gauges out of the console and see the crack-addict way that I did the wiring, and I just can't bring myself to tear it all apart and "make it nice", because it is currently working. In fact, the last time I was in there I probably made it worse.
    • The best part is when you own the car long enough that you look back and find your OWN ham fisted amateur shit!
