SCSI drives are worthwhile if you can afford them. The throughput is much greater than IDE and you will notice the difference with applications that need fast drive access. 3D Rendering uses alot of system resources and alot of the response time will depend on the slowest part of the IO system, which is your hard drive. The faster the drive, the better your system response time. Some people may disagree but SCSI has a definite advantage for this type of system.

You could get away with using cheaper SATA drives for a RAID setup, probably RAID 10 would be best (speed benefits of RAID 0 with the redundancy of RAID 1). The downside is you will need more drives and only use half the space on them if you want redundancy. I still say go for SCSI drives :P Either way this system is going to cost you more than $2k :D

righteo. Well what would you suggest then considering a budget of close to $2000 and 2 X 19" CRT's, good audio card (keep hearing about AISO drivers or something), 3D mainly, but also After Effects (so i guess it's gotta be a mid-way between HD and CPU priorities i guess)

As you can see, i've got a sem-complete list already, but interested to see what you think.

Seagate 80gb SATA hard disk - $83.75ex cost price

 

the choice is simple :P

Just slightly inflated prices there? :D Depends what RPM drive you're quoting.. You can buy a 73Gb Cheetah Ultra320 10,000rpm... for $455

It's true, a SCSI system will cost alot more than Serial ATA drives.. plus you would need a SCSI controller card too (another $300). but hey, you get what you pay for :D

      I am yet to see anyone ever regret a quaife or helical. ...other than drifting/skidpan duties. I kind of want to upgrade my factory helical with a Quaife (but really it's not ultimately that different, and is a MASSIVE UNDERTAKING), that's how good the hype is about them, that I want to try them 'just to see'

      D2 and Ksport are essentially the same thing and basically just generic Taiwanese manufacture. Better than ChinaBay crap, but... not top shelf. Öhlins have got to be some of the best dampers around, so likely to be a good option. It's going to get to the point though where I suggest you buy from Oz. We have at least 2x excellent options here. If I were you though, I'd be talking to KW about doing something for the R33. There's bugger all difference between that and the 32. In GTR land, anyway.

      KW only offers a set for the R32 GTR. Popular options are D2 racing, Ksport or Öhlins. I have a D2 Racing coilover set, though I don't know for sure which one.

      Fair enough, I am in no way a tire expert so I'm not familiar with all the terms and conditions. I'll definitely note down the AD09 to potentially try in the future. Rain is not too big of a concern for now as I will probably only drive in the rain when I have to. And considering I still lack experience driving the GTR I'd more than likely take it easy too. I have coilovers in the car but as I barely got to drive so far I never bothered to even check if they are adjustable haha. The suspension is almost entirely old and worn as well so I suppose when I eventually fix that in the future that would make a huge difference.
