THE Victorian Government wants to restrict speedometers on all new cars in Australia at 130km/h.

Premier Steve Bracks today said Transport Minister Peter Batchelor would submit the proposal to the Australian Transport Council, a meeting of state and federal transport ministers, in Brisbane next Friday.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on wether this will affect compliancing new imports and if theyre classified a "new" car when theyre brought into the country.

People in QLD regularly drive 130km/hr on the motorway up here and don't get booked, and its pretty safe actually.

Unless it was a uniform Australia wide thing, I can't see it going through. They are just going to fit modified speedos to new cars sold in Victoria? Why they even bother to publish it is a joke.

Stupid victoria!

I don't have a problem with it, because I can't see it happening.

Lol. I think the idea of having a future where all cars can only do 130 km/h & ignition only starts after a quick breathalyser is all good to say but is simply unrealistic.

Yeh, if my performance car came with a 130 tacho, first thing would be to get a chip & new tacho. They cant really stop it, its like music piracy, it's never going to end, one door shuts & another window opens....

Theres only one thing that would ever stop me from speeding on roads, instant jail time & very costly $ fines! A simple rule of influencing people is that if you raise the price of punishment high enough, people are really going to think about it & simply not do it! NOTHING will teach you better than pain & suffering. In saudi arabi or somewhere like that the government chops off your f#cking finger if your steal, i think thats great!

By the way when i speed its only ever on straights where i feel it is very safe to do so! Not in residential area's.

It won't happen. Deaths/injuries/accidents aren't caused by exceeding 100kms/h. Most of them are people doing 80 in a 60k zone etc....

How will they stop people doing 130k/h in a 40k an hour school zone?

i think certain people need to think before they speak.

hey, that's cool,  if you're doing 200km/hr the highest speed you could get done for would be 130km/hr  (provided they don't put in a speed limiter)

u still loose your licence, but u don't go to jail!!!

Hahah i like the way you think...

Yeh & what's the go with the other shit how there was a protest about the new fords or something which do 100km/h in 2nd... WHAT!!!! Thats nothing new or amazing!!! Stupid douches on TV just speaking crap, dam goodie goodies....

It pisssed me off when a guy at work goes after reading the SMH "owwww so have you heard about the new fords, *typoon or wateva it is*, it can do 100 in 2nd", he said it like he was impressed. I was like 'what! ummmm thats really ground breaking... hmmmm' They asked if my car can do 100km/h 2nd, i proudly said, 'yeh sure it can, so can a lot of other cars'... hehehe

I love a bit of booting 100km/h in 2nd @ 7000rpm, is great fun! Gezzz some motor bikes can do 100km/h in first, are they gona try & ban them too? Tossa's.

Hehe yeah the new GSXR1000 will do something like 160km/h in first. Hell, even mine does an indicated 134 in first, 188 in second, well over 200 in 3rd etc.

On a side note, most bikes these days have a digital speedo. No point, just thought I'd mention it as the question was asked a few posts earlier :D

But anyway, I can't see it happening. It's just another opportunity for a few morons to get their names mentioned on TV again.

I think its an absolutely shithouse idea!!!

had betta never ****in well happen!

it would b dangerous more than anything else

on sunrise this morning they interviewed some bloke from one of the major transport departments I think and he said that it could never happen because cars are being exported overseas and in other countries they have higher limits

It wouldnt stop people speeding, just give them another excuse to use to try and get out of a penalty!

I know for a while Holden have only had a 220km/h speedo fitted to the dash, but on entering diagnostic mode on the trip computer a digital speedo can be shown which is calibrated to read up to 298 km/h

yet again the bloody government want to waste taxpayers money on a shithouse idea that has no benefit to anyone but themselves!

and I bet they wouldnt stick by it anyways

after seeing that Richard Butler (former Tas Govener) was given a police escort down one of Hobart's major highways at over 150km/h, with cop cars behind and in front straddling 2 lanes to stop papparazzi getting photos inside his Merc!

that sort of shit really pisses me off!!!

if it was any other driver they would cop a huge fine and loss of demerit points and or their licence for travelling at those speeds!

    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.
    • Maybe they'll look to do a bunch of presales to help inject some cash fast for their financial issues...
    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
