mine landed in brisbane on 20th of Jan (from memory) so it took just over 3 weeks to get it cleared, delivered to sydney, complied, registered.

The car my wheels came in took exactly the same period of time: in fact I think it was probably on the same truck from Queensland as yours. I assume its probably correct to say that Brisbane was overwhelmed.

i think it's safe to say that seaway needed to have pulled their fingers out. but no matter now, I have the car and all the delays are a thing of the past...

For those guys who recently registered their imports in NSW, how did you go about it, did you :

1) pick up the car from the complience shop and drive it to the RTA to get it registered(do i need an unregistered vehicle permit?)

or

2) Collect paperwork from complience shop, then go to rta have car registered then back to complience shop with plates and rego sticker.

Just trying to work out the best way to do it

Its an over the counter transaction, however you may need to take the car to an RTA inspection centre so it can go "over the pits" (which is essentially just a plate check): if its a 15 year car its unlikely, but if its a SEVS car you may need too.

Well, so far the people we have provided contact details for (Jim Lloyd et al) have not been very responsive. They want to push through the changes without listening to all those who will be affected. Jim Lloyd's Office staff claim he is "out" whenever you phone, and they are deleting all e-mail complaints relating to this issue WITHOUT EVEN READING THEM, see below:

Not altogether surprising since it is clear that Jim does not care what the great majority of Australians think, instead he is more concerned about protecting the profits of the large car manufacturers who lobby the Govt. intensely for no apparent reason other than to maintain their unfair monopoly of the marketplace.

2004 saw a record number of new car sales of nearly 1 MILLION CARS. According to DOTARS, "grey" imports at their peak under the old import scheme reached about 17,000 cars per year. The introduction of SEVS dropped import numbers to virtually zero for many months, and the number now coming in even given the 15 year rule is certainly substantially less than the peak a few years ago. So import numbers would be less than about 0.5% compared to new car sales. Note that in 2004 Holden sold 79,170 Commodores alone. Ford Falcon, 65,384. Nissan Pulsar, 19,531. Even Toyota sold 17,879 of their Echos in 2004 !

Remember of course that those enthusiasts importing secondhand vehicles under the 15 year rule are never in the market for a new car anyway ! And what's more, imports are nearly always more efficient and have higher safety and emissions standards than the local options IN THE SAME PRICE RANGE and / or of the same year.

We have been advised that the following people will be much more receptive to your thoughts on this matter than our poor friend Jim who doesn't want to listen to the people that voted him in. If sufficient public response gets to the right Politicians, the issue may be raised to their awareness and this will at least give Jim some difficult questions to answer in Parliament if not postpone the changes. At this point, most of the people that matter still seem unaware of the issue. We are seeking to change that, with your help, and to make this issue a political hot potato. But there is not much time left so if you feel strongly about this issue then please make your thoughts known to the following, in particular to Kim Beazley. Don't forget to point out how many small businesses will be affected by these changes and how many people will be put out of work.

My importation update.

Just spoke with Mark Hocking over in Japan, a great guy. I just recently got an email from him regarding the fact he couldn’t start my car last week when they were trying to get it down to customs and clearance at the docks. So mark took it back to Prime garage where it was built just over 1.5 years ago, they eliminated the spark plugs/coil/leads and some other stuff, but pointed it down to the GTR High Flow Fuel Pump. eeek hehe, So they will be putting in another one tomorrow, 40,000 yen more.

But then the good news came, My car will be on the next vessel leaving Japan next Tuesday, coming to Fremantle, which should arrive 11th of march according to the Fremantle ports docking schedule on there website.

my car didn't make it on the kiwi boat that left on the 19th or so. Been told the next kiwi boat isn't leaving till the 12th so its either waiting longer or possibly trying to get it on a boat with a different carrier. I tihnk this is mainly due to the kiwi boat thats still out of service. Whats everyone elses status with boats at the momment? i been waiting for a boat for a month or so now.

skypy12: Well my car was booked around the 29th of November last year and was elligble for immediate import leaving Yokohoma. Its missed 3 kiwi boats now.. and I know my car has been in the kiwi holding yard since January. The next boat arrives here on the 10th of March.

It depends on what boat and what port. My friend bought his 300zx about 4 weeks ago and it got straight onto a boat, straight through compliance and we registered it a couple of days ago. While i've been waiting since November and my car is still not on a Boat.

I have mised three boats into freo from Kawasaki. Theres only one per month and spoke to the supply yesterday and he couldnt let me know for certain if it would get on the next boat. After waiting months for my vehicle to turn 15 it's turned into a very long process.

pentae, I would be so annoyed. I was talking to someone else who had been waiting since November too for a car to come to Fremantle port. And here I am with my car, which I bought 26 days ago, already on boat which left Kanda on Tuesday, and will be in Fremantle on the 11th of March. I think it comes down to your supplier in Japan, have you tried ringing him and applying pressure or get your broker too? Unfortunately we are small one time buyers, they already have there money. Not like they will get anything extra out of us. The guy I mention previously tried calling up his supplier but didn’t get far.

But hey you are one patient guy, your wait would have just killed me, but once your car hits the water, you’re going to really appreciate it :D Be the best feeling you had in a long long time second to sex, and if not in your case better.

I just checked out my my R32gtst Type M. Some F#$%wit has keyed the paint work down both sides. Actually its more like a screw driver mark.

Your in Queensland, so I assume it came via Kiwi, in which case you can probably attempt an insurance claim under KIPS (http://www.kiwicar.com/kips.htm):

SPECIALIST COVER FOR YOUR VEHICLES

KIPS will provide automatic insurance for your vehicles (note that inner cargo is excluded from cover - as are vehicles that are deemed to have already sustained accident damage, or are not driveable), from the time of purchase in Japan until delivery onto your premises or other commercial premises by transporter (first place of rest after transporting from port discharge area). Please also note the following:

Marine Insurance cover terminates in the following circumstances (Whichever occurs first):

  1.      30 days after discharge from the vessel

  2.      Delivery to the importers premises, or premises described in the Bill of Lading

  3.      Delivery to other commercial premises instructed by the insured

  4.      When the vehicle is driven under its own power - except when incidental to the loading & unloading.  

Delivery into Bonded store that is incidental to the transit of the vehicle shall continue to be covered by KIPS, provided the total period from the date of discharge from the vessel does not exceed 30 days. If the vehicle has not left the port or bonded store after 30 days from the date of discharge from the vessel, cover will automatically cease and become the responsibility of the importer to insure.

KIPS WILL PROTECT YOUR VEHICLES FROM THE FOLLOWING RISKS - AND MORE

Fire - pilfering - stranding - general average - mishandling - theft - earthquake - sinking - collision (whilst driven incidental to loading and unloading).

The trick is going to be showing some evidence the car was not damaged before it was delivered to Kiwi's holding yard in Japan.

can anyone tell me if the cars getting shipped in containers are making it out of japan faster than the roro cars... maybe the container ones will get out faster... mine is comming in a container so im hoping this may be the case...

Anyone know when the next Kiwi ship will be arriving in Brisvegas? According to schedule all i see is dashes.

Oh and madmurf I think I would be crying also. Go the KIPS and see if you can get a full respray. Dirty #$%@ers.

According to my importer (JDMBOYZ) there is a kiwi vessel which left Japan a few weeks back on its way to QLD now? Should of arrived in QLD on the 24th of feb, but may of been delayed a few days?

    • What copper washer do you guys use on the bleeder bolts? The existing one I have I had no idea where to find it in a local store, I did buy some online but that are only 1mm thick whereas my old one is 2mm+ thick and when I put the new washer out and squeeze the top radiator hose I can hear a bit of air but not with the old one. Does this matter? The new one doesn't leak, but the inner diameter is a bit loose whereas the old one threads on the bolt.
    • Howdy all, after being out a few weeks ago on a spirited drive in my GTR I have 2 issues that oddly have appeared at the same time. Whilst accelerating quickly through the gears all of a sudden i’ve lost power at the top of third gear (below redline around 6000rpm) for no obvious reason.    From that point onwards the car has been running rich on idle, won’t really rev under load without a ton of black smoke and the odd backfire, and dying as a pull up to a set of lights unless I keep the revs up around 1500rpm. In addition when shutting down the car that same night (I was 10 minutes from home) I noticed one of the turbos was significantly noisy on wind down when shutting off the engine. After letting the car cool down overnight it starts up fine, although once it gets to temp the revs start to creep up and down, the exhaust is darker than it should be and it also sounds like it’s running rich (fat note) I’ve put a new set of plugs in it - no change, the old plugs all seemed OK with two of them being somewhat richer/fueled up than the other 3 with 1 being borderline. I’ve smoked tested the intake system via the front of the Turbos, found a split vacuum hose going to the factory boost gauge sender, which I have since replaced.  Also found another leak on the gasket coming off the rear turbo outlet, have also replaced this. After fixing both of these leaks - still have the running rich issue. I’ve also tried another pair of AFM’s - no change here After pulling off the front turbo intake pipes, there is obvious shaft play in the front turbo, which now hisses loudly on light revvs although I can’t see why this would make the car run funny even under idle. I’m curious to know why it’s running rich before I potentially replace/rebuild turbos. The car is completely stock <50,000kms  other than an exhaust. Oil and coolant are all clear. I haven’t bothered with coil packs as it looks like they won’t be the issue due to condition of the plugs. Any help appreciated as I cry myself to sleep!
    • No probs at all. I used to love trying to dig up obscure info for those in need where possible going back 20+ years on SAU.  I did have another look and couldn't come up with any closer match. I'm leaning towards those skirts in your first pic are custom fitments, cut down/extended or from another car entirely and modded to fit an R34 sedan. I would've thought someone in Japan had them and taken a photo at some stage over the last 2 decades but there's nothing. Someone out there must know surely.
    • Welcome mate. Any pics? Even with a DE I'd be well happy if I had that as a 1st car.
