The apexi's aren't as loud as some of the other brands. Everyone has them, so i'd assume they're the most popular choice. I have a DRIFT filter on mine, it flows at pretty much the same rate as the apexi's and is quite a bit louder (main reason i got it was coz its a tight blue colour, goes with intercooler joints and my yellow paint) Apexi ones would probably filter dust and crap better though.. Still $30 for a DRIFT one $150 for a apexi one.. and your probably gona lose power over stock box, idk just some stuff to consider

Flutter sounds good on some cars not all... some cars sound absolutly f*king annoying! My friends s15 has a big ass apexi gtr intercooler i cant remember how thick the core is but i think its like 110mm? correct me if i'm wrong bout the cooler but it sounds awesome.

The quick flutter noise (like alot of skylines i've heard) and a few s15's s14's i've heard and 180's sound SHIT with the quickets tutututut you'll ever hear and then a pop after the gear change lol cos of the added richness which makes u just wana kick the owner in the teeth... besides they wanted to attention didn't they?

But flutter on standard skyline ceramic turbo = no go zone unless your looking for an excuse for a bigger turbo. :(

My 2 c.

Then why didn't mine come with one from factory? (hr31 coupe)

1989 cefiro RB20DET NO BOV

1989 R32 skyline RB20DET HAS BOV

WHY OH WHY?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Because the cefiro uses the redtop motor with a different rocker cover, and back then they didn't come with a bov from factory.

BOV, from the factory, is only there to keep the emissions gods happy

Cefiro, as pointed out, started production earlier than R32, so different emissions rules when it was designed

That's also why the Ceffy RB20 has bigger cams than the R32 RB20

For maximum 'dose' noise, use a hardpipe between the inducer and the afm, also, the bigger the cooler, the louder it will be

Apexi pods can be bought for $98 delivered from CJ Motor (a nissansilvia.com sponsor), straight bolt on for RB20/25 and Z32 AFM.

I have seen an independant review between apexi, blitz sus, hks mushroom and K&N - apexi had best flow and much better filtering than the others. Well worth the money

Yeah Ive read that review aswell and i think it was covered on ns.com too im also a memember on ns.com ATTN gettin the filter off CJ

Heres a pod filter test if it helps anyone. i dont know if you have already seen this.

i also had the same problem with some one telling me the wastegate makes a fluttering noise. it was like talking to a god dam retard.

Tom9999, that's the one, I expecially like it because it doesnt appear to have any affiliation with a particular manufacturer (or advertiser), and they test REAL power gains, as well as filtration.

Nor sure about centre lines, but bigger lift and longer duration. I saw it on a japanese website that had a comparison of nissan engines' cams over several models...

The ceffy runs bigger cams?? >_<

Just different centerlines or increased duration/lift also?

Redtop cam profiling is a bit more aggressive than silvertop. Slightly more duration and lift i think(not sure if it's exhaust side only *shrugs*). The figures are somewhere here on the forums in a thread, just can't remember how old

aaanyway. If you want a decent fix, give me your BOV flange, i'll butcher the shit out of it with a welder, and charge you an arm and a leg for it >_< no need to worry about aluminium can bits if you are really that concerned.

Seriously. Just go to an exhaust shop, tell them you want them removed, and sell the thing/things.

I have on hand the redtop cam specs but aren't the Ceffy's silver tops?

R31's were redtops? >_<

yup, import 31's were redtops. Cefiro's are silver tops.

The red top came in two versions, NICS and later model ECCS.

This is where its interetsing, the cefiros were infact redtops with a silver coloured top. The internals, turbo, ecu are all redtop ECCS spec.

    • Yes to both! Yes to standard ECU and tune, but exhaust is aftermarket. Unsure on brand. Actually have it sitting in at my desk haha! I have to set it up on my laptop but this is a great next step, will do. So I generally try to shift before 4.5K RPM most times. I largely don't do a lot of high-rev driving, but I will take it up to red 1-2x a week max, as I know the occasional "Italian tune-up" is good for these cars.  Oh wow, is this way better than what I'm getting. Does this mean there's a good chance I have an issue?   Thanks for all the info so far guys.
    • Old Son, did you re-use the Holden ABS in the new shell or try a different module?
    • Yeah, nah. I had the actuator rod off it today. The arm will not move at all. Neither out, nor in. Yeah, you'd think so, but I've been thinking about that. Even when the actuator rod fell all the way off at the beginning of this saga, it would build more boost and faster in lower gears than it would in higher gears, and you'd think that that was the opposite of what should happen. But I strongly suspect that there is a thing with the gearing getting the revs to rise faster, that there must be some transient effect with the gas flow rate rising quickly, that you don't get with the more steady state case of the higher gears. Keep in mind - the gate is not shut in either of my weirdnesses. So things are not "normal". We normally think about a turbo spooling up (below the wastegate target) with the gate shut. I have all sorts of mental models running now where the gate is a little bit open, and having it stuck open allowing gas out while it should be going through the turbine has all sorts of weird effects (in these mental models). I'm thinking in the higher gears, the ex mani pressure builds to the point where enough gases spill out the wastegate to just prevent the pressure rising much more at all, or just creeping up, all the whole the revs are increasing and getting closer to the point where a gear shift becomes necessary.
    • Is it possibly wastegate actuator itself is sticking, or even the rod to flapper? Otherwise I reckon things are getting a bit rusty/worn   Also odd it won't boost in 3rd to 5th, but will in 1st, I'd expect the other way around with it slightly open as there's more time on your way to redline for it to spin up
    • Does anyone know ow what these two plugs are for and if they should be unplugged? Just put the dash back together and can't remember if these were plugged in before or unplugged! (Blue and white plugs) 🤦🏽‍♂️
