WRX Club - Rnd 2 - Phillip Island - March 12

Recommended Posts

I was going to stick the pregnant women together but Im easy. I think what ever happens if we have 2 houses we should just pool the funds together and split it all anyways. I'm sure everyone that comes will agree it's not fair for those of us that did the organising to get shafted on this. Cause if we do you can be sure it will be the last time we do it which will be a shame. Costs won't be much different that what was originally posted and will still be a damn sight cheaper than motel rates.

The good news is it looks like we needed the 3rd house anyways. Its seems the Saturday night could be quite busy with some of the day trippers wanting to stay over. The weather sure helps - I know where I'll be come Sunday in the 32deg heat. The beach thats 400m away from the house! :P

Snowie.....good idea with the preggie women.....my wife was glad to hear that she'll have someone to empathise with LOL.

So Roy I guess I'm in Snowies house mate.

I agree with Snowie....we should pool the costs and split equally.

Faxing form off today :) - You guys are putting butterflies in my gut thinking about turn 1. I read the hole thread from start to finish last night - can't stop thinking about how much you PI experts are going to laugh at me chugging along :P

Don't worry Robin, I'll be chugging along aswell, hopefully we're in the same group!!!

Robin - of the 17 members there's 5 that know the track well and 2 that have done a few laps which leave 10 people in the same boat as you mate.

And I was also once told that 80% of people never get above 7/10th's on this track so don't exepct the world the first visit. Our first day Chris and I were struggling to break the 2min barrier but now are below 1.50's. (well Chris isn't quite yet but he's weak sauce if he isn't after this weekend! LOL)

Any 1st timers here that find after Saturday that they really enjoy this track (as you will!) my advice is to look at one of the PIARC weekends to help improve times. The saturday Practise session which are 20mins mean you get to do 8-10 laps per session rather than just 3 as per sprints. And then to back it up the following day on the Sunday in timed sprints is the best way to learn this track. All the other Vic tracks are pretty easy to pick up IMO but this one takes a while.

Unfortunately this is the only WRX Club event at the Island this year so the only one in the club championship. But outside of those rounds a PIARC weekend is probably the only thing I'd like to look at doing this year as this is the best track in Vic if not Oz.

Who is going down on Saturday morning? Where are you meeting (if meetimng at all) and what time?

Post above: my fingers are producing cheques that my skills can't cash! Nice to dream though.

Robin: will you be running semi-slicks? what mods, and driver exp do you have? :P

I'll be driving down Saturday morning, probably meet my mate in berwick/narre/cranbourne somewhere at about 7am, ill let you know if you want to cruise down with us.

Well im hoping for a 1:53 but want a 1:52:) So its time to put up...or sht up:(

An if anyone needs bonnet restraints, dont presume that Geoff or I will have the parts for them. They aint hard to make, or expensive, but you still need to have the parts on you. And i know its only $10 but in the past ive forgotten to ask, and they have forgotten to pay, so if you happen to remember:) It will hev to be the honour system cause i cant remember whose cars they were for.

And the Dr tells me i now have 235rwkws and comes on hard in the lower gears:)

Robin - make the first target 2:00mins. Less that half the field will be under that time I garantee.

And then lower the bar from there. Considering you haven't been on the track before you will be amazed and how much harder going from 2:00 to 1:55 will be. Especially when you first start out at the track you can do a lap and think "I don't think I can possibly go much faster than that". And yet the next time you go back you will go faster again.

For interests sake - especially you first timers - check out the results of last year WRX event.

Times go all the way down to 2:28s. Anything under 2:00 put you in the top 25. 1:55 made you top 10 and consist only of very serious cars. And you can be sure these people had track experience as well.

I was blowing smoke out of my a##, seriously, I would be happy to make it around the track without blowing something up and any time even near 2.00 I suspect I will be boot-scooting anyways:)

Ferni: I have TOYO R1R semi's on the back (80%) and Hankook streets on the front (95%). You reckon since its going to be a dry track I get the semi's put back on the front tomorrow arvo? (50%-60% remaining) Will it make that much difference? Also got TIEN HA's that I have never touched (don't laugh but the twisty thing in the cabin and boot to adjust set up... I would not have a clue how to use... booklet is in Jap!) maybe one of you fella's could educate a brother on such things over the weekend?

Driver exp= 0.00 never been anywhere near a track (have been to Sandown to watch once... even watching gave me butterfiles

I'm in. Where? I will need a Melways ref. as I do not know that area well. Also, I will send you my Mob's via PM just in case.

Well team, sad news. I got the car running today and went over the injectors with a stethoscope as it was a bit missy when I first started it. It all settled down and was idling nicely, responding nice to the throttle given no tune yet on the larger injectors and was run for an hour. I enjoyed the sound of the BB turbos still spinning 30 seconds after switching off and the sound of the GTR twin pipes gives it a new tougher note.

I jumped in to go to the local servo for some air for the tyres and just see how it was going...all good.

I left the servo, pulled second gear and brought the boost up to a whole 5 psi as I got to 70kmh and then it started missing for a brief moment, then the note changed entirely. Looked in the mirror and there is a ghastly grey/brown cloud of smoke. Had to stay on it a bit to get it home, a whole 1 km. Tried to get it up the drive but it stalled and hasn't started since. Popped the bonnet and cranked it and there was the deadly sign of a blown piston....white smoke from the catch can filter. AT 5 PSI!!!

The one thing I didn't do was assure myself and clean the injectors, even though they were supposedly cleaned and flowed. Was running short on time nd overlooked that one detail, even though I was meticulous with every other part of the fuel injection and keeping the injectors clean. I'm still a bit shattered but hopefully it is ok for a single piston replacement with no machining.

DAMMIT!!!!

Have a fun weekend. I'm grounded :)

Ill call you you a little later...man my heart sank. Truly. You are so meticulous, im betting the guy that sold you the injectors is a lying douche bag, and for one they were never cleaned or flow tested, and two, may not even have been the cc rating he claimed.

You trust ppl and sometimes they aint worth of the trust:(

    • As I've said elsewhere, I am using the stock intercooler piping path in the engine bay, and a return flow cooler, and making ~250 rwkW (without any effort put into trying to turn it up past there just yet) and expect to be able to make some more, and frankly, I would be perfectly happy with 260-270rwKW. This is peak road Skyline usability territory. You go past there and, sure, the car will snap necks more when it's on boost, but it will also break shit all the time, cost a (even larger) fortune in tyres, etc etc. Anyway, I also do not like the over-the-fan pipe path, and you don't have to do it.
    • I see, honestly I’m not too fussed about the looks. The only reason to go plenum is to make the piping easier instead of the classic over the rad etc.
    • Not easy to quantify wrt something like how many fractions of a second slower it would be over 0-100. But given that a 250-300rwkW car is able to do that launch sprint in 5-6 sec (and faster with appropriate tyres, and surface)..... giving up as much as a second would feel like torture. A ~450HP capable turbo is not going to make lots of boost in the 2000-3000 rpm range. So, whilst with some boost on hand it will be faster accelerating in that rev range than your engine currently is NA, it will not feel like a fast car until the boost is solidly in. You know what your car feels like right now when you open it up at 2000rpm. if you've ever been in an actual fast car, you will appreciate that the NARB25 is.... not exciting. Well, add some boost and it will be better. But shorten the intake runners and it might not be better at all. It might come out better, but it could end up feeling the same. For me, it's not the 0-X km/h sprints that matter. It is easy to fry the tyres with anything over 200 rwkW. You can't use all the power available in 1st and 2nd anyway, you have to modulate the throttle. What matters is how the car reacts when you're driving in traffic in 4th or 5th and have maybe 2000 rpm on board, and you want/need to add some speed quickly, and don't have time for the downshift. It won't make boost, it will be all NA (at the speeds we're talking about - remember how fast you're going at 2000 in 4th! and don't plan on breaking the limit by too much.) So giving away NA torque is not what I would consider practical for a street car. And retaining that NA torque builds boost faster which makes the car faster. The flashy plenum is not actually better, unless you're looking at a track car where you can keep it on the boil all the time.
    • So how much difference does it make you think? Like 1 second in the 0-100?  I was have smaller turbo so hopefully that spools quick GTX2871.  currently it’s NA so you can imagine pretty slow, but I do want fast accusation a little as there’s not many places I’ll be driving where I go over 80 even near me. So 0-60 and 0-80 targets
