Heya.

I am looking at purchasing a LS2J (Level 2 Speed Junior CAMS Licence ).

I am waiting on a reply from AFARC as I need to be a member to get the licence.

When CAMS replied I was told I could use any car I wanted but restrictions on categories depending on modifications.

The e-mail I receieved noted the licence as allowing me to do the following:

* Regularity Trials to National Championship

* Single & Multi-Car Speed Events to International

* Some Touring Road Events

* All Non-Speed Events

Bottom line is that I would need to purchase and make suitable a relatively cheap car. I was wondering if anyone wanted to give me some ideas and if it all works out perhaps help me build something up... I had something like an Escort Turbo in mind..

Price I dunno.. Prob round 3000 max.. I'm pretty sure I'd be able to get some dirt cheap modifications even if 2nd hand gear..

Thanks,

J

I "might" be able to purchase my uncles mint condition 1600 wagon...

Can I pick up a decent SR20DET for it maybe ? Aren't they like 2200 for a RWD SR20DET

Note: I would need all the other stuff like g/b clutch brakes etc... Prob too expensive in the end..

I need to get all the roll cage and stuff maybe someone will have some decent turbos to sell hell cheap.. I dunno but I'm 14 I can't exactly get all this done myself maybe if I can get some parts anyone knows how to install it...

I don't know anything about conversions haha.. that's why I'm posting here.. Brainstorming ideas and seeing if anyone knows how to mod cars, fit roll cages do conversions etc..

Yeh maybe CA18DET but I still gotta get it fitted and all that.. Sure I can pick up some S13 brakes or something.. It's getting all the mods n fitting and conversion done..

I might be able to get a bit more.. I can prob get a car dirt cheap.. I dunno..

I saw a VB Commodore with a bodykit, custom paintjob, worked 308 and a 5-speed manual put in. That was about 4'700. My mum might be able to help me out money-wise.. But I'm not sure if it's smart to get that plus it will be sold by the time I get the money.. Even a non-turbo escort is it that hard to fit a turbo ?

Might have some mates that know how.. Meh.. Anyone wanna do it dirt cheap

Personally I'd buy something cheap, rwd and n/a. about 500 for a 200b, gemini, escort like you said, etc etc

Full cage would cost you 1800+ but you probably dont need one.

seats, harness etc about $1500 if they need to have current dates. Bugger all ($500?) if they don't

full bushes, swaybars and coilovers $1500

There goes your budget but at least it would go OK.

Or, much better idea, check out my105 or similar and buy a club car that someone has already blown all the money on so you don't have to  A guy over here just bought a 13b powered crapri sports sedan for aroudn $10k.

Cheers Duncan, Good info. I was talking to some guy that does speedway and he might be able to do some work for me.. If I got like that datsun or something I probably would only be able to get springs and shocks for it, right ?

That guy I was talking to said I should look for sponsors but I wasn't sure as I don't have a car lined up yet and even if I did, I've never raced before. Duncan, I honestly have no idea what a 105 is (I'm assuming that is a typo unless thats a no. plate...)

I could be able to get a car for up to 1k and then spend around 4k on modifications.. I can pick up an SR20DET for around 2200, not sure if thats half cut or not. I wouldn't say it'd have to be in top condition anyway because it will only be for track use, then I could get a better one later down the track.. I just worry about the conversion.. Could I do it all for 4k and I would need brakes and stuff..

I'm tryna find someone with experience that maybe can do the conversion cheap. Anyways, looking forward to replies.

Thanks,

J >>> [p.s - if anyone does wanna sponsor xD]

I know they are all over your budget, but remember that when buying a race car, the cost to purchase is about 1/3 of the cost to be ready to race....these ones are all ready.

I guess my main suggestion was that if you don't have a big budget or much experience, just stick with something cheap and na. It will all still happen plenty quickly when you are racing. And you can always buy something quicker later

A final option I forgot to mention is importing a silvia or rx7 for race use only. Will be around 5-6k now the 15 year rule is dead, +around 5k on suspension, repairs, tyres etc. You just need somone with a C3 CAMS license to import it for you

I bought a 91 gtr, landed in Aus race/rally for $9k. From there it has so far cost $15k more and we are still a couple of weeks away from hitting the track.

Cool Duncan. Good site, thanks man.

I was talking to my best mate and his mums ex ( still great friends ) is "supposedly" (cant spell, sshh) one of the best mechanics in the state. I highly doubt this, though would an experienced mechanic be able to do a conversion ?

My mate is going to ask him if he can show us how to do it all, therefore eliminating the installation costs etc.

Thanks,

J

Yeah that rx2 would be farking quick, 13b bridgeport should have "adequate" power

think of all the work you thats already been done that you wont have to.

personally I'd stay away from the HQs, there are a heap for sale because a whole heap of state series are closing down. They are about the worst race cars out there, heavy, slow etc etc...even the daewoos are quicker.

transport...you can ship a car via companies like TNT, I shipped mine from Alice Springs to Syd cost about 700. With Perth you may be able to get on the back of a race teams truck thats already sending other cars over for the barbagello round, or maybe one of the guys going somewhere for the drift nats :)

    • Yeah I've had too many issues with knock off's on the BMW's. I don't want to do a job twice or more because the parts are shit.
    • I read this and thought "ah! I will do this scissor jack on the tow point thing!" I just use my floor/low profile/costco jack and lift the car up by the tow hook itself, then slide jack stands under. Never thought about using scissor into floor jack combo :p
    • Well, my new WMI system took much longer to finalize. I actually missed my dyno appointment last Friday and lost my 150$ deposit. I'll be going back in the next week or two.  To sum it up. I only kept the AEM tank from my old setup. I replaced the AEM pump with a higher flow/pressure ProMeth 30GPH pump. I also swapped over to a 6AN low pressure feed line to the pump from the tank. There's also a pressure switch you cannot see on the pump high pressure line.    This is feeding 6x 200CC direct port nozzles and 1x 500CC Pre Throttle body nozzle. All fittings are Swagelok, because well why not. I also have a 300PSI pressure sensor up front.    I now have my Haltech ECU controlling everything. I start my pump with a basic relay at 5PSI and deadhead it. I then PWM a 3000CC methanol Injector to control flow starting around 10psi. The pressure switch in the trunk, along with my tank level are safeties before I ever get to 10PSI, and then I use my pressure sensor upfront as a secondary safety to cut the WMI and corrections in case the injector blocks or a line ruptures.  Wish me luck on the dyno!
    • So, I'm back with bad news. There's no jack long enough on this planet that will reach the front subframe. If by some chance there is, it would weigh 200lb's.  I purchased a long reach jack... The damn thing weighted 120lb's and was massive. Didn't even come close, was still short at least a foot. It was a pain, but I brought it back. Next I decided HA! No problem, I'll get an Extra long reach jack. Well, I couldn't lift the box... It must have weighed 160LB's and luckily there was an open box in store. I took measurement and was still nowhere close.  Sadly I've lost hope and have accepted defeat.
    • Thanks for that tip, niZmO_Man. I think the battery is OK. It's quite a new one, but I'll check. Last time I needed a new battery, everything electronic was fine, except that there wasn't enough current to turn over the starter. I decided to order one of the partial AV system translation CDs from Car Audio Workshop in NZ. That might have some effect, or help me diagnose the date problem. 🤞
