Hi guys, i have a 95 R33 GTST manual, and after driving the car for a while i can smell an oily type smell that leaks into the cabin. its not engine oil smell, its more like gearbox or power steering fluid smell. now im not sure what the gearbox oil would smell like when it heats up, has any1 ever smelt gearbox oil when its hot??? the reason i think its the gearbox oil is bcoz after driving for a while i think the smell is coming up from the gearbox. and i dont seem to be leaking oil anywhere on the ground. its a really strong smell that wafts through every now and then. any help on what it could be will be much appreciated. i know its a bit hard to explain smells.

I have this same(?) strange smell .. and it's gear box oil smell in my case

started happening when I had the gearbox oil replaced .. am yet to find the source of this annoying smell, there are no indications at all of a leak from the box

but I suspect it wouldn't be the rubber boot you suggest as there would be no need for this to be disturbed for a simply oil change, I had never had the smell prior to the oil change

I guess the first step would be to try another brand of oil

hmmm, funny this ... my car just started leaking coolant into the cabin (near the dash on the passenger side).  Has anyone had this problem before ??

this is not uncommon in imports, it is the heater core leaking, you need to replace the heater core, or else bypass it. it would be mostly due to the insides of your cooling system being corroded (like most imports)

Mine started about 3 weeks ago

Short term fix is to disconnect the heater hoses in the engine bay where they fix to the heater unit under the dash and fit a short length of 20mm pipe to join the 2 heater hose ends together

A/c will still work but no heater, this way you can still drive the car

I have removed the glove box and it appears you should be able to remove the heater section and replace

If you cannot get thru the glove box area to remove the heater unit, then the dash will need to come out

approx1-2 job to remove dash.

If you do have coolant leaking inside, you will need to lift the carpet up on the passenger side to get the under lay to dry out

Hope this helps.

cool guys, well i had a look today and i cant see any leaks on the passenger side carpet, the smell wasnt that strong today but when u drive for longer i tend to smell it more. will have a look under the engine bay for loose clamps 2moro. the power steering fluid seem to be staying topped up so thats a good sign. maybe the heater core is just leaking every know and then on mine not fully gone yet., also will pull apart the gear boot and have a closer look into tha seal thing. all depends on the time i have to look. thanx pred will do a search and have a read anyway.

haha my car has that smell. Same thing as wizard oz. it only started happening after i had my gearbox fluid changed. Only thing i could think of if the rubber boot thing got broken while doing the change is if they pulled the gear stick out to fill the oil up through there.... if they are really dodgy and you can do that in skylines. I used to do it with my old escort haha...

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
