I have used the search function, but it didn't really answer what I need to know, so I am hoping someone could help me out.

Right, I am importing a 33 gts-t with some mods, and I want to get permits to keep any hassle to a minimum. What I need to know is does an engineer need to inspect these mods, or can I get them in advance???? I have had a look on the DPI site & it says something about requesting approval to modify, but it dosen't really make sense to me.

If they need to inspected, can they be done at any pits??? I think there is one at Warwick, which is the closest to where I live. Otherwise I can get it straight away at Welshpool when I collect my car.

Hopefully someone can help me out, these are all the mods the car has at current, and I won't have the standards :

Adjustable suspension

Airpod

Rims

Exhaust (cat-back, pretty quiet anyway)

Muffler (why it's quiet)

Steering Wheel

Leather gearshift (only included this because it seems some cops will look for eeevvveerryyyttthiiinnngg)

Of these, what can/can't be permitted (exhausts seem to be VERY inconsistent)???

Hope someone can help me out!!!

If you are importing it, it must be stock when complied. After that you can mod it. Permits are issued by the pits, whether or not you will get a permit depends on what exactly you do. For example, wheels can be changed, but the track must not be exteneded by more than 25mm.

For best results, I would suggest you call dpi and get it straight from the horses mouth. G/L

The pits now do not need to give permits for Airpods, Intercoolers, Strut Brace's and the like. Also you can not be yellow stickered for them.

Blow off valves you can get permits for but "must remain quiet in operation" ie, impossible show the copper your permit and get done for "Excessive Noise"

Anything that is different from standard they can and will sticker you for, right or not (or the cop that stickered me wasnt wanting to play).

Either way get permits just to be safe so u can stick it to the cops like i do now, they tend to not bother checking my car when they see the permits (so far anyway, touch wood)

I passed my bov by running the standard valve with the hks blocked off so it sounds quiet and permitted it:D

i thought anything that result the car for excessive nosie ie POD filter are illegal.

whats the dpi number and what mods are legal and what are illegal, does any1 have a list? cuz im importing a skyline too, and i would hate to be "p" target too ive got 4 months left til i get off my p's and i know for sure when i get the car, the cops will give me sh#t.

hey if you buy a car of someone and they have all the permits for the stuff they installed, then you change it so its registered under your name and not theres will you have to run the car over the pits again and get all the permits again ? or can you just take the previous owners ones?

as far as i have been told, as long as your pod filter is bolted to the chassis (via a bracket like the Apexi one) it can't be defected. the reason they can be defected is due to them coming loose.

but it usually depends on the cops attitude, i have been pulled over a few times and i have an APexi pod and a loud exhaust and they didn't say a thing.

ive got a permit for my FMIC and induction system (i assume this is just my pod) previous owner of the car had it.. it has gotten me off almost getting a yellows for my *exhaust* lol!

copper told me he was going to give me a yellow, so i whipped out the permit, and just said 'yeah the air comes in thru the pod, runs thru the FMIC, then passes out the exhaust, so it needs to be large and hiflowing due to the air coming in' cop: '.......oh... well.... its good you have a permit there! *grumpy whinge*'

It's wierd all the different responses, I my self am not totally sure, but was under the impression you needed permits for Pods, FMICs and certain sized rims. The Pods still have to be fastened regardless. I think you gotta be lucky not to get a cop in a bad mood by the sounds of it!

i just got my 32gtr licenced and i HAD to get a permit for my apexi pods and fmic (even tho it was stock?).

It does save my ass later i guess and a permit is only 30 bucks and can put as much as you want on there (as long as they pass it)

also, with the turbo timer, you are allowed to have them, but it is illegal to leave you car running while it is unattended. its kinda like the shops that sell bongs, but you arnt allowed to use them!

that said, it is a good idea to unplug or disable/hide your TT when you take it over the pits.

Morlock, Roy from C-red has a permit for his CF bonnet, has something to do with the date the vehicle was manufacutred and whether or not it predates the applicable ADRs.

Kinda weird, the older a car is the more you can modify it. Defys logic IMHO, you can build a twin turbo V8 as long as its old enough its legal, but you cant do it to a modern car with better suspensions,brakes etc. ADRs certainly dont help make the streets safer in regards to vehicle modification, just encourages the modification of older cars. Sorry, starting to rant :rofl:

    • perhaps i should have mentioned, I plugged the unit in before i handed over to the electronics repair shop to see what damaged had been caused and the unit worked (ac controls, rear demister etc) bar the lights behind the lcd. i would assume that the diode was only to control lighting and didnt harm anything else i got the unit back from the electronics repair shop and all is well (to a point). The lights are back on and ac controls are working. im still paranoid as i beleive the repairer just put in any zener diode he could find and admitted asking chatgpt if its compatible   i do however have another issue... sometimes when i turn the ignition on, the climate control unit now goes through a diagnostics procedure which normally occurs when you disconnect and reconnect but this may be due to the below   to top everything off, and feel free to shoot me as im just about to do it myself anyway, while i was checking the newly repaired board by plugging in the climate control unit bare without the housing, i believe i may have shorted it on the headunit surround. Climate control unit still works but now the keyless entry doesnt work along with the dome light not turning on when you open the door. to add to this tricky situation, when you start the car and remove the key ( i have a turbo timer so car remains on) the keyless entry works. the dome light also works when you switch to the on position. fuses were checked and all ok ive deduced that the short somehow has messed with the smart entry control module as that is what controls the keyless entry and dome light on door opening   you guys wouldnt happen to have any experience with that topic lmao... im only laughing as its all i can do right now my self diagnosed adhd always gets me in a situation as i have no patience and want to get everything done in shortest amount of time as possible often ignoring crucial steps such as disconnecting battery when stuffing around with electronics or even placing a simple rag over the metallic headunit surround when placing a live pcb board on top of it   FML
    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... HTH

    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
