Hi,

I'm stuck in 3rd gear, been stuck for a while. I think the thrust bearing was on it's way out before getting stuck (it was whirring/clunking with the clutch pedal up, then when you'd press down on it you could hear it wind down for a few then stop making the noise).

Question is - if I replace the thrust bearing, along with a clutch plate and pressure plate with a machined flywheel. Will the gearbox then come out of gear? Or will I have to put a new box in as well?

The reason I ask is because if I run the car and put my foot off the clutch pedal it will try to roll forward then stall (basically, the clutch seems to pickup still).

When trying to pull it out of 3rd it will only go down a little bit but not entirely out of 3rd, if I try to put the clutch pedal up in this half way out stage grinding can be heard from the gearbox.

I've got a gearbox and clutch ready to go in, I just want to avoid putting the gearbox in for now (as I don't know it's condition) and wondering if the clutch kit itself will help.

Thanks.

when you pull the gearbox out to do the clutch, see if it will come loose then. Have you tried taking all the weight off the g/box to see if it will come free? Any sort of incline will put weight on the box, and want to stop it from releasing.

Cheers

Sounds like your clutch is dragging, have you bled the hydraulics to make sure you haven't got air in the system?

As steveL has said, if you can get the car out of gear when it's switched off then it'd point to the clutch not fully disengaging rather than the box being stuck. Even with the clutch dragging you should still be able to pull it out of gear when the engine is running.

If you're really lucky you have a dragging clutch and a rooted box :( Swap them both.

I can't get it out if it's off. The car is quite literally stuck in 3rd. I've tried jiggling it, heaving it, pleading to it and bashing it.

Sumo how would I get the weight off it? I've tried pulling it out on the hill it stopped, in my driveway, on the lawn, halfway down the street, on the street etc etc all different inclines. I've even 'bumped' the gearstick to shake the box on it's mounts left to right hoping it might get it unstuck.

Dave I haven't bled the hydraulics. Sounds stupid but I don't know how, I might look in the s13 workshop manual tonight and see if I can give it a go without putting more fluid in (that stuff is damn expensive). I don't think this is it however as the box had been locked out of 3rd and 4th for about a week before this happened so I think something i s wrong with the box.

Wow Dave so by the sounds of it I'm really lucky? :(

Shit yeah!

I'm afraid this is a gearbox out situation - somethings broken or bent. Since you have another gb and clutch don't waste anymore time on the one in the car just change it over.

i would say you have most likely broken a selector. that is why you can't get it out of third. possible just bent a selector but i'm guessing it's cracked. in fact I'd almost put money on it.

i have a question. have you ever had any fun out of this car? it's been a pretty awful sounding 6 months so far.

Yeah I had some fun mmmgtir. I picked up my (now) girlfriend in it one day, I was going for a cruise and I saw her at the bus stop and picked her up.

It broke down on the way to getting wherever we were going and it was about that time I figured out she was a decent girl when talking to her on the side of the road.... she's been my gf since

Also I pulled a burnout in it once.

Other than that.. no... oh wait.. the engine fire was fun, uhm.. finding out I had no screws holding my engine in that was pretty funny.. heh no seriously I did laugh.

And uhm.. yea what else :)

I should have bought your GTiR.

mate, as long as you've had some fun in it, it's should be worthwhile. it should be a good car once it's eventually sorted.

I am actually looking to buy a silvia or 180 or maybe even a 31 sky as a race car. I want to keep the GTR predominately a road car.

yeah, but I personally think that an SR20 is the gun engine to have. hmmm maybe you should sell me yours....

I like that silvias are cheap, I can buy an SR turbo manual for under $9K or buy a SR non-turbo man or auto for under $5K. then I will strip it out, do all the suspension and brakes (and if needed slot in a SR turbo) and bobs your mothers brother I have a cheap race car that will probably be as quick around a track as my GTR (if not quicker) and be a lot cheaper to blow up/crash...

Yeah the sr is a gun engine.

And yeah silvias are cheap. Stripped out there's not a lot that can beat them like that to thrap, they have lots of ready parts and yeah it's all good.

Hmm I've been considering selling my car, but I've just finished fixing it after this!!!

Hmm still got your GTiR?

DON'T drive it!! When you get it out, have a quick look inside. Should be easy to see what's bent or broken. You have'nt lent it to any of your mates lalely, have you?.. Any of your mates [or girlfriends] sort of fairly hairy, with longish arms?? Sounds like only a bloody Gorilla could do that much damage, changing gear.

I've had a problem of my previous car not coming out of second gear before. It would literally not come out of gear, no matter what I did. It turned out to be the master/slave cylinders packing it in. Hopefully it's an easy fix for you :(

yeah man i'd have to say ive nuked two SR gearbox's in the two 180's that ive owned. apparently they have a semi weak imput shaft and from what i can tell they don't like quick button off from wheel spin.

My first box i twisted the output shaft and stripped third and second. My 180 at the moment i shattered the input shaft and the main cluster. I guess the moral to this story is that maybe i should be so abusive. BUt sounds like a clutch problem to me. Had a five puck weld to the flywheel. couldn't get it out of gear then.

i have a similar problem except it hasnt gotten fully stuck in gears yet...

Im havin trouble getting it into gears when the car is stopped.... the gearstick just wont go into forst or any other gear... and i have to use excessive force...

It's also been stuck in gear a few times... like i put the car in neutral but it still stays in that gear... ???

Any ideas ? as its gettin more and more difficult to get into gear!

Thanks

Mine doesn't like going into first either!

I just (whilst stuck at lights ) try to go in first rarely goes in so i proceed straight to forth (clunk sound )then go in first goes in str8 away.

Also as pushin up to first ,firmly till won't go in any more .give it a rev.

As for putting in neutral and it still in gear"start puttin $100 bucks aweek away......you will be needing it!!!

:Bang:

    • I thought I'd come back and add something I JUST learned. A Toyota LandCruiser with a 1HZ, mates perfectly with a bottle of Nulon brake fluid. As in, it perfectly screws in. Great make shift funnel when you cut the bottom of it off. This may work for your Corolla.   Unfortunately, tipping a 10L drum is much harder than a 4 to 6L bottle, and they no longer include the easy pour tap which was just perfection to use previously.
    • Guys since i bought r33 gts25t coupe 1994 automatic a/t(manual swap 350z gearbox)  all i got is problems, always problems. Lets start with that when i turn key into ignition(ON) fuel pump doesnt always works. Sometimes i have to turn key twice Off/on/off/on until it primes. Its new, dw300 - 340lph. My gearbox broke so i did gearbox swap, install different intake manifold, injectors and i take pipes. Car was sitting in garage for more than half a year. I did assembly all not that long ago and when i turn ignition cant hear prime. All of sudden it stopped working. Theres many videos on YouTube how to make relay mod on r33 straight from battery so i did and it doesnt work! 😰 30 - battery positive  87 - positive from fuel pump to relay 85, 86 - one of two wires from original fuel pump wires(light blue, grey) and it didn’t work. so I check on ignition and took original BLUE relays wires from trunk, next to fuses. (I believe it’s IGN+ and ECU pin 18. it didn’t work…  tried connecting (IGN+ from og relay) and (ECU 104 from 1of4 FPCM wires) to my new relay 85/86 and it didn’t work.  I unplug FPCM. Didn’t work. im thinking what’s wrong   fuel pump is working, if I leave IGN+ on 85 and 86 straight to ground it works but it’s just nonstop. Since it getting constant 12v after key in ON. light blue wire gives me 6-8v.  so how this should be connected? What causing ECU not giving — on pin? Or I did sth wrong and that’s why it doesn’t work? I need negative signal on ECU that control fuel pump. What this should be?
    • You can use your VIN to look up the factory part number somewhere like amayama, and then look to order new if necessary. https://www.amayama.com/en/genuine-catalogs/nissan Depending on price you might want to rebuild instead. @GTSBoy I had an interesting insight into US market parts when the Titan rear calipers were sticking. New calipers were dirt cheap, about 20% more than a rebuild kit....they are just considered throw away maintenance items
    • Funny, but really not funny. Thank god (most) f the world has moved on since then
    • Lots of votes for driving onto a plank first; that is the quickest way I've found, 25mm is enough for my case but that will vary by car It also depends where you are going for. On the 32 I can get to the rear diff with my floor jack if I do that end first, and get it up on stands. Then I lift the front from either front tow hook as high as needed, also onto stands. Sometimes I need a small lift on the other tow hook to get it level enough If I do the front first I can't get to the rear diff because of the angle of the car Other options are getting to the front mount of the rear subframe from in front of the wheel (if only lifting one side, or just do both which is a bit of a pain compared to one lift from the diff), or also the gearbox cross member mount on the driver's side if you are  just trying to lift the driver's side. I This is the jack I use; it says 75mm clearance but of course that is only on the lower section so if you have to reach too far in like the diff you still get stuck. https://www.snapon-bluepoint.com.sg/category/Floor-Jacks/product/Floor-Jack,-2-Ton-Low-Profile
