Like many I've become a victim of the recent flood of defects which I seem to be reading about. Got done on the Old Pac by an extremely pissed off Highway Patrol. You shoulda seen him. He drove past my mates and was abusing them telling to get the @#$% off the road and calling them all sorts of names. Then pulled up behind me and pulled me over. I thought he was gonna hit me. He was sooooo angry!! He spent like 20 mins going over every inch of my car looking for everything he could possibly do me for. Ended up getting me for Blow off, Pod filter, No H pattern on the gear knob and my muffler was too big????

Now I understand about the POD and Blow off and accept it but whats the deal with a muffler thats too big?? I asked whether it was cos it was too loud because my exhaust is really pretty bloody loud. But he was like "Nah the exhaust aint really loud but its too big!" My question is whether this is actually defectable (exhaust too big). Will I have to get a smaller muffler?? Cos i would assume it doesnt matter how big it is but how loud! Any advice on this whole situation would be appreciated. Unfortunately I'm sure it won't be the last time I'll be whinging about defects!! :(

when was this? on Sunday?

I think its a case of your muffler is bigger than my muffler envy :P

Unless this is some new rule, I've only heard people getting done for exhaust/ muffler above the legal 9XdB & ground clearance; for many states its around 10cm.

lol

H pattern isn't defectable (my engineer said, as no ADR or state regulation in NSW specifies it).

Pods aren't defectable either so long as they pass the drive by noise test (ie the 90db applied to exhausts..) and aren't oiled. Mine is engineered without a box.

My engineers cert also specifies a 4.5" muffler tip.. so ehm.. sounds like this guy is just defecting anything.

Good luck getting em cleared tho, just get a mate to rubber stamp it.

Yeh Sunday

I saw that cop patrolling on Sunday and he looked pretty damn furious coz everyone was waving everyone to slow down and he didn't get anyone.

Its not wonder he went nuts and had a field day when he found you.

lol

Who's your engineer? I kinda need to get it done pretty soon. I got 5 days to pay up!! How much am I looking at spending? Sounds like it shouldn't be too much of a hassle though.

Driving up the old road with your mates in defectable car and you are surprised that you got picked up :P

Let me guess, you were all driving at or below the speed limit right?

Of course not:devil: But it was mods that were defected not my driving otherwise he would've done me for speeding as well... I don't think I've ever seen anyone drive the speed limit up there anyway.

perhaps he was meaning that it is too big there isn't enough ground clearance... they usually do the coke can test :(

Its easily above 10cm. Well an truly so if its not too low and too loud then it sounds like he's being a knob

Can I get stuff engineered anywhere or only at places recognised by the RTA?

yeh i had that happen to me, but i argued my way out of it... saying its not loud and doesnt let off any emissions/smoke.... and he said yeh blah blah. you should have kept arguing, mines pretty big tho.... good luck with it, but im sure youll get away with it, i havent heard of that rule, and ive asked a few people,, plus i got done about a month ago by the RTA and they said nothing about the size of my muffler!!!

as for pod not being a defect.. how can you prove its not? how can they show its below the noise limit?  i got done for my pod... noone at that time told me it wasn't defectable... so whats changed?
About a year or so ago when I got a 'defect notice' for my hks pod (which I wanted to change back to the factory box anyway because I didnt like the induction noise) I took it to a local RTA recommended blue slip mechanic and he laughed at me. He said no where in his "book of rules" does it even state you have to have an air filter connected let alone it must be boxed. He rang up the RTA to give them a hoot but the RTA guy that answered simply stated "anything that is non-factory fitted is a defect" ... end of story.

By the time I got it cleared though I had already fitted the standard airbox so it was a simple 1min check and off I went back to the RTA.

I've said it 100x and i'll say it again, things will never change until the Police go back to fighting crimes (breakins, rape, bank robbers) and leave all the traffic offences to the RTA, I mean that's what we pay them for. It's a win win situation for us all.

LOL woah, so some of the guys getting around Woodcroft/Blacktown in Skylines ARE on here. I pass heaps on my way to and from work. There's a nice R34 GT-T on that main road through Doonside/Woodcroft... and a stocky R33 T too that I see every day

Saw somebody in a GSR getting absoloutely assblasted by a couple of cops on motorbikes the other morning. Bonnet up, boot open, doors open, book out.... ouch!

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
