look out they will shortly be taking oncomming photos at fixed positions

previously they only took a photo of the rear

The reason why they only took photos from behind was so the flash didn't blind and/or scare the driver, potentially causing him to swerve and cause an accident.

Do you know how they have overcome that problem?

i am guessing they will use the same camera that are in the sydney harbour tunnel

these dont have a flash.. they are infared cameras or something like that..

reason for not doing it was cause motorbike dont have a front number plate so its descrimination.

however you will c motorbikes with front plates very soon

also fixed speed cameras generally only work in one direction

very soon they will be bi-directional

dont know about the technology for the flash just know about the cameras

prime example being the mount ousely (woollongong) cameras that will start working shortly

Dunno about them worried about 'discrimination'... I'd say they were more worried about losing a few bucks due to not being able to identify the vehicle.

Good luck to em getting a numberplate on the front of many bikes... there's nowhere to put it. I know on my bike, the only places it could possibly go is:

1) Over the headlight

2) On the windscreen

3) Below the headlight, fouling on the front wheel at full travel

And not one of those areas could satisfactorily accomodate a large, flat plate. They are a bunch of tossers.

The real reason behind NOT taking pictures from the front of the vehicles was privacy laws. Wouldnt be great disputing a fine, having the picture sent out to you and your wife standing beside you when you opened the letter with the pic showing your girlfriend in the passenger seat. It was brought about by the privacy act.....

Guys I have been issued with a speeding fine, which was photographed front on I asked for the photo and the photo is that clear that if i was sticking my toung out you could see it. By the way this was taken almost two years ago. I'll get it scanned and put in on the forum.

no there wont. this argument/discussion/debate comes up a couple of times a year and both sides stick vehemently to their guns saying that they have it from a reliable source etc.

well, here's a thought.

check the back issues of AMCN and Two Wheels for the past 10 years and you'll see that it has become such a long tradition that they now have April fools jokes in these and other publications saying that this will take effect as of (insert date here).

Beg to differ. Privacy legistlation (IN THIS STATE - NSW) says that you can't. This needs to be ammended and as of today (27/12/2002) it hasn't been.

Sorry, but this is incorrect too. The cameras at the bottom of Ousley are on the other side of the road to what we're used to, i.e. the same side of the road as you is USUALLY the side that takes the photo. Not in this case. You will notice that when next you drive past them that they are placed so as to catch all lanes in both directions.

e.g. The South bound camera is on the Western side of the road and catches ALL 3 lanes. The two coming down Ousley as well as the traffic from the on-ramp and the lanes from the gong heading south... NOT the two lanes going towards Sydney.

Similarly, the North bound camera is on the Eastern side of the road, staring you in the eye as you round the bottom bend of Mt Ousley Rd on your way down. This is so as to catch ALL traffic Sydney bound and not just those BEFORE the Uni on ramp.

Worth it for you Sydney guys to keep an eye out cos you wont notice them straight away. Of course, as with all fixed speed cameras, they have to be posted and they are not yet. I imagine that they will pay for themselves fairly quickly though.

mt ousley speed cameras r on trial for oncomming traffic not bi-directional (fact).

im led to belive that they use a standard flash (which doesnt sound to safe to me)

another reason for taking the oncomming photo is cause they can get truckies that speed.

just make sure that you slow down earlier

My only speeding ticket was from a car-mounted camera, taken at night, from the front, with a bright flash. In early-ish 1999, in Sydney. I was going 72 in a 60 zone in the middle of the night with no other cars around on a wide and brightly lit road. I wonder how many lives were saved by that ticket I got
