so what other bolt on turbos are out there that make substantially more power than the 260rwkw that the hpiab one acheives ? I thought for the price of the the turbo thats a pretty good result .

What I would think a better option is the GT3071 with the internal T25 .86 exhaust. They are an early spooling powerful unit and reportedly good for 300rwkw. I have a few in the field here but no dyno results yet, as they are a new option here.

The negative is you will need an adapter for the base flange if using on a std manifold.

As the Horsepowerinabox turbo uses the .7 comp cover this combined with the VG30DET exhaust a/r would most probably make more power than the GCG item that runs the stock .4 (I think it is) RB25 comp cover.

Inabox, Would you be willing to offer such an item IF the vg30det exhaust housing was supplied?

Cubes the real GT3071R's CHRA number is 700177-23 with the 84 trim 60mm GT30 turbine. Its on that site under medium frame comparisons .

An interesting thing to look at is the turbine efficiency of the more performance based turbo options . The GT2860RS (used to be called GT28RS) is 72% as is the GT3076R (GT30R in old speak or 700382-12 CHRA) . The GT3582R (old speak GT35R or GT3540R) is 70% . It starts to slip away with the 56 trim version of the GT2871R at 66% turbine efficiency and goes through the floor with those "other" GT3071R's that use the cropped (56.6mm vs the normal 60mm) GT30 turbine in the overbored GT28 exhaust housing . There's an even worse example in the GT2876R (old speak GT2540R Garret version) which uses the 76mm 48 trim T04S dinosaur compressor , around 60% turbine efficiency . The side note even says not recommended for performance engines as its not symmetrically sized ?

When you can find them the Garrett engineers will tell you that high turbine efficiency is critical to make it work well . You may think the difference between 60 and 72% efficiency is trivial but in the real world its huge .

When you consider the turbine and compressor pair major diametres a pattern begins to show .

GT2860RS 53.8 x 60.1 10.4%

GT3071R 60.0 x 71.1 15.6%

GT3071R 56.6 x 71.1 20.4%

GT3076R 60.0 x 76.2 21.3%

GT3582R 68.0 x 82.0 17.1%

GT28T04S 53.8 x 76.0 29.2%

Generally the closer in size the pair are the greater the turbine efficiency .

Th GCG ball bearing high flow has a highly modified (machined) compressor cover.;)

Got any more info on these turbos disco? Im looking for something for my 3L....how do these compare to the old GT35r's? Whats changed from the previous turbo...

Also noticed they have a GT32 series now??

All I want is a nice efficient .8# turbine a/r internal gate turbo that makes close to 280rwkw without spending a fortune on a hks item. :P

That's what I wanted too Cubes 260-280 rwkw every day of the week, that's why I am so happy with my GCG Hiflow with the VG30 rear end. And it fits on stock as.

All though the smallish comp cover should reduce spool time.

This Vg30 GCG highflow jobbie, say you accelerate from 2000rpm in second gear with a flat foot, what rpm does it kick? I'm assuming at that point it makes 19psi correct?

Hi Cubes, I'll do that test tomorrow for you and let you know, otherwise I would be guessing. I've only booted the car when it was at Oran Park last week and I wasn't concentrating on the RPM gauge or the boost gauge, but I'm sure it was less than 4000, just like the normal hiflow, but the power that it was making before it reached maximum boost was enormous and it came as a huge suprise to me. I'd never felt that before. I'll take note of what, where and when tomorrow when I do some testing and report back to you. OK Cubes?

cubes the hpinabox gt30 will pull 280rwkws. i will post up my new shootout graph once my engine has been rebuilt with forgies. im putting in tomei poncams step ones and dropping comp from 9 to 1 to 8.5 to 1. may even fit a magic cat or at least something better than the one im running. as for this turbo being ordinary, well i dont have the budget for a high mount hks set up. so im very happy with the combination ive got . boost starts at 2500rpm and peaks at 3500rpm , and if i can find another 15 to 20 rwkws i will be over the moon because its a nice balance between power and response is what im looking for.

Black32 only the name has changed , they've got a unified system at last .

GT32's are all bush bearing except HKS's GT3240 which is another cropped bastardised turbine job . Don't mistake GT32 and GT35 compressor maps and look for the all important "R" for rolling element or ball bearing cartridge ie GT3076R .

My airflow calcs tell me the RB30DET should have the XR6 Turbo on song around ~3600-3700rpm.

Doesn't sound so bad and it would definitely free up the top end VE for the 3ltr extending peak rpm power. :rofl:

You should come out and visit,it has been -4 degrees and god knows what power im making cos of it.

Snow drift is fun too.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
