Guys - the key thing to remember here is that driving a car which is outside the power to weight ratio is done so at your own risk.

The laws are there for a reason - I have very strong views about younger drivers putting themselves behind the wheel of such powerful cars, but we needn't go into that here.

If you are on P's and are driving a turbo R33 or R34 - or any GTR... it is illegal. Sure, you can register it, insure it - you may be stopped by the police and not told about it... but the law is still the law.

If you are involved in an incidednt, it is well within the right of the insurance agency to deny your claim based on these reasons. It doens't matter if the car is registered to your grandma - if YOU are driving a car that is outside the kw/kg range - you do so at your own risk.

Insurance companies may have catchy jingles (and dumb ads with Pete's car in it) to make you feel warm and fuzzy... but at the end of the day, if they don't have to pay, they wont.

To summaise:

No turbo R33, R34 or any GT-R is legal on P's - no exceptions

This has been covered countless times.

What ever happened to driving a Corolla until you turned 21?

we decided to risk it lol

i registered mine no probs, but my ive noticed with the insurence companise they're dodgy, you pay the fees and premiums, but when the time comes and you hit someone (lets hope it never comes to this) and you require a payout, they'll look at the car details and notice that its over the power to weight ratio and wont cover you. PERIOD. so be carful...

Hey my old lady is a manager at AAMI and if you read your policies correctly you for any insurance comany in Australia there is a clause that exempts them from any liability if you are not legally allowed to drive your car.

Example. Your an 18 year old kid, you buy a GTR, you can register it, you call the insurance comapny they will insure you you crash it they can fight you in court not to pay a cent.

When you sign the contract the emphesis in on YOU to ensure that you are legally allowed to drive the car. The insurance company will F*ck you over later if it suits them because if you read most contracts in detail there is a section that states something like "I agree that under the vic roads act 1998 that I am elegible to drive such a car as stated under my policy dated blah blah blah..."

If you total the car they may investigate and say

"Hang on you said you are legally allowed to drive this high performance car when the law says your not"

"Your claim for the BMW M5 you cleaned up and all damages to your own vehicle has been declined...sorry"

The reason they don't tell you this over the phone is that they would potentially lose heaps of business and in 99% of cases they will not get a claim and the few that they reject you probably never hear about. WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS PERFECTLY LEGAL... However ethically questionable.

Hey,

Theres good information, but what if your car is stolen and insurance company find out you are not allowed to drive it, will they pay you out if the car isn't found?

Cheers

Grant

ok enough is enough really

i mean if they void it cos you are over power to weight and you were't actually driving the car you could just argue that you've never driven the car and its been in your driveway since purchase and the only reason you brought the car was to wash it in your drive way. i guess they would have to prove you drove the car with some form of evidence to allow them to void it

So,

It seems insurance is not worth it if you drive a overpowered car... It's just waste of money if you want to drive R33 GTS-t you can get 3rd party and hope it isn't stolen, back ended, crash into some animals in country...

Cheers

i doubt they'd win that 1. if you aren't driving the car, you aren't breaking any laws. wether or not you have driven it in the past has nothing to do with it, as it doesn't even relate to the claim

this has all got me thinking now..is full comp even worth it?

or should i just put it in my parents name

ohk.. i didnt get full comp for this reason.. because i thought it would be a watse of money to hand over my $3k and have the good chance that they wont pay out....

however... the reason they will happily give you insurance is because .......... """" IT IS 'NOT' ILLEGAL TO OWN ONE OF THESE CARS""""...... just illegal to drive them.. which is what everyone seems to be forgetting... so if your R33/34, gst-t/gtr for example gets stolen from your driveway at ngiht while you are asleep... they cannot use the power/weight technicality to not payout.. because you were not driving it... you could just say it sits in your driveway all day everyday looking pretty.!!!!

it is only if an addident occurs while you are behind the wheel of one of these cars as a P plater

i decided to take the risk.. i know some may not agree with it.. however i choose to look at it as an infringement.. not breaking the law lol.. so it makes me feel better about it ;)

anyways enough of my ranting.. illegla to drive.. not own

the end

A r32 gtst is not illegal, its under the limit.

If you do a little research, you will find that 89-90 r32 gtst's COUPE's are over the limit, 91 onwards COUPE's are under because they are slightly heavier. All the 32gtst 4 doors are legal as they are marginally heavier too. :)

if this is the case, why does anyone bother insuring them if its basically guaranteed that they wont pay out ?

because people are id|ots and try use the "i didnt know" excuse.

Which isnt valid either

Its certainly plainly deceitful, clearly dishonourable and blatantly immoral for insurance companies to offer policies which is easily discernable that the person would not meet that policy (i.e. a date of birth and a certain vehicle). However, of course a young person is going to take up a policy, on the hope that they are covered for their R33 gts-t, etc. But of course being young, they may not have enough experience in the wider world to not know better, and in effect, throwing thousands of dollars away to subsidise general motorists in their standard cars. Now its obvious the insurance companies will exploit this person to their advantage to make further profits, never mind the completely untennable premiums charged to younger drivers.

It is for this reason I wouldn't EVER insurance a common car with AAMI/Just cars just to save a few bucks - just because they are scum, and do take advantage of younger drivers. If they had any morals WHATSOEVER they would say "sorry sir, this vehicle would be illegal for you to drive, therefore we cannot insurance you for this vehicle"... never mind the b.s. 'oh but you could own it and not drive it'. They know that is pure bullshit, just as well as you do.

Never mind the actual difference to the amount of people driving these cars on the roads, which some can argue shouldn't be happening (while I still don't know where I stand on this issue after many years!). It would be stopped pretty quickly in its tracks.

You would think the victoria police and the state government would be stepping in to pretty quickly pressure the insurance companies to change their ways.. but hang on a sec, its all about public safety they are concerned about .. right ? :)

Of course, something SHOULD be done about it, and there should be a huge outcry over it, but with the ageing population, who really does care about the youth of today? It's certainly not your politicians.

we all know insurance companies are they are the scum of the earth and shouldn't be given the time of day, but unfortunately we all require insurance so they have us by the goolies.

your first chunck...

The R33-t is LISTED on VicRoads website as a car thats illegal.

If someone doesnt do thier due homework.

When you take a policy they also state as long as the car is LEGAL then its fine.

Its owner onus to know if it is or it is not

doesnt change the fact insurance for a male upto 25 is a joke tho

Hmm.. would be an interesting one..

I would also like to know the answer to this..

Greg

depends where its stolen from

if its ur driveway, they HAVE to pay

if its out somewhere...then you'd have to say someone else drove it there legally...but then they'd have to be someone on your policy

Oh okay cool... no problems with that then.. I'll just include my older bro in the policy (he's off his P's now)

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
