Hey i'm gonna put a GTR engine in my car, give me sum advice please ppl. And how much u guys think my exist engine worth? it's done 80k, i regularly service, timin belt, no oil leak anywhere at all...ICE Performance reckon it worth ONLY about $1500.

What's the better option? do the exist rb25det up or throw it out and rb26dett in?

Thanks guys.

well dunno about engines, but it may be right as you can buy a whole front 1/2 cut for $2500-3000 although price vary and depends on demand and availability at times when you buy or sell them... also depends on condition n milage of your engine.

GTR engine still cost $6000 up I think... so you're left with $4500 changeover... with that sort of money think of what you can put in your car, upgrade your engine or turbo, fmic, etc... well its your choice...

and don't forget if you put RB26DETT in your car, you need a GTR ECU as well, either you get factory from wreckers or maybe included in the engine if it comes in a package, or you get PowerFC which will set you back a further $1300-2000 depend if you get it 2nd hand or new...

Have you worked the rb25det to its limits and want more power with the gtr engine or are you just after the wank factor of showing off to your friends you have a gtr engine in your gts?? :P

with all the money ur gonna spend on the engine and fitment and all the other minor headaches like wiring looms and what have u I'd strengthen the RB25DET, like cooler, ecu, turbo, bottom end forgies fuel pump injectors will have u a very quick car might cost u a couple grand over, but remember the RB26 is obviously gonna be standard which means ur gonna have to make it quicker, more money on top of that... plus ur line is rwd which aint gonna be that much quicker than the RB25DET....just my opinion in the end its ur car do what u like bud... :P

that car at calder last nite with the rb26dettran a 13.8 he had the r2 gtr motor in it .. i was talking to him.. he spent 5 grand on that motor and olnt managed to get a 13.8 out of it,, ( heheh and i managed at 14.1 with a stocky rb25det hahahah)

if i were u i would get the rb30 bottom end and bolt on ur heads

u would probly gain more power that way

thats what im planning on doing anyways...

  • 4 weeks later...

If you buy the standard GTR motor and drop it into a GTS-T it won't drop the 1/4 mile time too much!, also its a whole package that brings down the times not just the motor. i.e driver skill, car weight, traction and engine and so on..

But the RB26DETT is a stronger base and it responds to mods very well!, with good tuning and resonable bolt on mods there is no reason that a good streetable 500hp can be achived without touching the bottom end, try getting 500hp with the standard RB25DET bottom end!

So for the long run I would (and I am) fit the GTR motor and mod it when you can afford it. (as there is only so far that you can take the RB25!)

MEGA

    • Turbomachinery engineers. They're just mechanical engineers who generally studied in universities focused on oil and gas, aviation or that had a formula SAE competition team. We have an entire team of them in our engineering department... they geek out over data and performance testing. I worked with them a lot when we developed an anti surge system for centrifugal compressors ran by electrical motors (~20 000-50 000HP) to avoid surging on accidental power loss.  They laugh when I mention automotive turbochargers.... it seems they're lightyear's behind in technology due to poor funding. If you think formula 1 spends a lot of money, a single turbine/centrifugal compressor package in my line of work including the balance of plant equipment generally ranges in the 150-250Million range depending on size.
    • The diff brace did not increase NVR at all. And yea the whole reason I thought getting the rear diff brace was a no brainer was because of the reduction in wearing the bushings out + wheel hop. It's a cheap mod for a big cost mitigation in the long run. I bought it for $99 USD + shipping. In regards to the sway bar - i had some over/understeer going on but i just checked my tires and they are pretty worn out. I wont be changing them til july since i'm away for work for a month or so. will sort it when i get back and do more testing. But its definitely still a big thumbs up from me given how planted the car feels now and me being able to go around corners quicker. Still puzzling to me why they never put a LSD into these cars....even the 400z. I saw this mob selling LSD kits for a decent price though it's a little more involved on your part to get it installed: https://www.tractionconcepts.com/Infiniti-Q60-R190-Limited-Slip-LSD-Rear-Conversion-p/tcxin9240.htm
    • Great for thrashing on the track - particularly if it is all corners. Otherwise, it is a recipe for massive tyre wear and reduced straight line traction. -1 is plenty for a streeter.
    • There are other MAP tapping ports. There's one that runs to the boost gauge MAP sensor on the firewall (over in the corner behind the brake booster). Start at that sensor and follow the hose to the plenum.
    • Japanese circuits have always looked tight to me on Youtube vids. They seem to be able to fit tracks into the smallest of spots. I've never experimented with camber in the rear. I'm running similar front camber to you (albeit in the E90) but I've been looking into what options I have in the rear. -3 rear seems like a lot. Yeah, mine is the N54. I had an N52 330i for about 7 years, it was awesome but I just needed a little more poke. The N54 is also DI. I'm running BC coilovers with the M3 front arms and a Whiteline front sway bar and the turn in and ride quality is brilliant. But I do still suffer from a bit of roll so I've been looking into that lately.
