Don't panic.

I use regular unleaded in the jigger always. Rb20det, might not be making full power but it's certainly not pinging, that's what your right foot and the CAS are for.

I have found the regular starts much more easily than the PULP, just one touch and she's away. Same car on BP Ultimate has to crank away for quite a bit.

My only garage is a Matilda and their premium ain't too flash. Closest BP is 30mins away on the highway.

ping ping!

in response to grigor... hmmmmmmm let's see:

extra $5per tank of petrol vs. $600-800 second-hand engine + labour + inconvenience + possibility of new problems with that engine

hmmmmmmmmm i might just go any put in what is was designed for myself

of course, its your car so best of luck with it

I considered getting the car tuned for std. regular unleaded.

Then figured, $5 extra per tank.. bugger it. who cares.

I've considered throwing regular unleaded in it and watching the knock monitor to see how much of a difference it really makes. I would then pull ign. timing out until there is no longer knock.. It would be interestering. :D

Come on guys!!! There is a difference between ping and knock.

How do you think your car was tuned in the first place? You advance up the spark until in pings then back it off a few degrees.

I don't have access to top quality fuel here in the sticks so I sacrifice a bit of power by winding back the spark.

What I said was don't panic. One tank of fuel won't kill it IF you use your right foot sensibly until it's been diluted with premium.

my car pings going up hills with regular unleaded so i dont boost it at all on the rear occasions i have to use it.

if there is no other alternative to povo fuel i will just put in what i need to get to a servo that has PULP

You should be OK if you drive the car conservatively, and your tuner has given you a street tune that allows for margin of error. I wouldn't go do a track day or the drags with it, though.

If you're using a piggyback or light tuning the factory ECU, the knock sensor and the learning functions should compensate.

If you're using a full aftermarket ECU (like a PowerFC), most of them don't have the learning function. It won't retard timing etc if the engine pings.

Occasional pinging isn't that bad (cars are engineered to sustain that kind of load occasionally) but if your car is constantly pinging (audible or not) then you're just causing undue stress on your pistons.

I'd use 91 to limp home if I was stranded in the middle of nowhere and couldn't get octane booster, but I'd put in as little as possible and be keeping an eye on my revs and throttle load.

i did this in my stocky 33 and 32 gts-t's (only when i couldnt get premium).

I didnt have any problems. I didnt drive it hard.

If you need to tank up on 91 or 95 octane, please stay out of your boost range, otherwise your engine will knock if it is tuned for a specific fuel

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
