hey guys

considering im in the market...is there a way to actually check if a car has dodgy k's?

i know 1 way is to see if the numbers line up properly...but surely if someone takes care when winding it back, they can get em straight?

is there a way to actually check if the k's on the clock are for real?

personally i always get a cars engine and body inspected by a pro before i buy, so if the kms are fake, and the engine etc is in good nick, then they kind of benefit me when it comes time for me to sell...

still, i'd prefer genuine k's!

I think its pretty hard to keep the line of numbers straight when you wind back. even if they were initially straight, they go wonky once the ks start ticking over. i know mine was wound back, sometimes the numbers look very straight, and others they look a bit up and down...

some people guage kms by the wear on steering wheel, gearknob, handbrake, pedals, seats, dash ect

yeah, this car is supposed to have about 65-70 thousand ( i dont know the exact figure) but the photo of the interior looks great....do you think that means its dodgy straight away?

that interior looks brand new in those pics! as long as the engine is in good condition and the body is straight & car handles nicely, it would be a good buy

my thoughts exactly...

its just a shame its not in a color that i was planning on....

still, i've never seen the color in real life, so i should check it out...its not the burgundy u always see, its a series 2 color... AR1- Super Clear Red II

i would recommend hanging out until you find one that is the colour you prefer, i almost made that mistake and im glad i waited a bit longer. there seems to be an abudance of sellers out there at the moment & no buyers, maybe cos of fuel prices?

i have asked a few people, the general response is that you cant do it. but because less km = higher price on a 2nd hand car, im sure someone has found a way to do it.

from what ive heard, its too easy.

just need someone who knows what they're doing, and its as good as done....a mate was talking about it ages ago, told me for $200 he could get it done. hook up the computer, bang, low k's!

i was hoping there was like a way to plug into the R33 ECU and check the REAL k's....but no idea if it is possible....it seems like something so easy that could be done by a manufacturer when they make the car...

as for holding off for the right color, i agree. my top choices are

Black

Dark Grey/Gun Metal

Silver

White

Burgundy as the outsider...

there is currently a series 2 R33 GTS-T, and its in a color that is supposedly rare...."super clear red II" ....its not the same as the series 1 burgundy, but its similar i think....i might go check it out in real life and see what its like, coz i might even look the goods

the car itself has like 65ish on the clock, immaculate interior (judging by the pics i posted above)

cant seem to find a nice black series 2 with decent kms!

thinking maybe i should look into importing...but not too sure

the wait wouldnt be the problem...its the trusting the guy that im handing the cash over too!

hey mate, im not sure where u got the info about numbers lining up straight but it is BS, even the numbers on a brand new car may not be always straight go look for yourself.

and with the way the clusters work, if the numbers were not straight(enough to stand out) the mechanism would probably stuffed and the numbers would not turn much anyway.

i inspected one car which the importer insisted genuine kms 'i only buy the best, good cars, with log books etc', took the car for a drive, odo didnt even work!

i have inspected HEAPS of gtsts, gtrs, 180sxs for friends and myself and i hope you believe me when i say that there is no way to really know how many kms the car has done, only assume that it HAS been wound back, because most of them are (even though everyone seems to think they have that rare low km example yeah right!!)

assume they all have average kms for their age, so most would have around 130,000kms..

my old gtst had 120,000kms on the clock and the interior was like brand new, not a mark on it, and the seats were barely worn, so just because the interior is perfect doesnt mean it has "low" kms.

only judge on condition, check if things have been removed bolts missing etc in the engine bay, check the body for any bad repairs (most have been repainted, and mostly not very well either!) and check interior for missing parts and marks etc.

another thing is, all of them look good in pictures, trust me. i have seen heaps of photos on the net of interiors and exteriors where they look great, and in real life they are shitters. so dont assume anything looking at the pics.

btw i have a series 2 gtst in that rare red colour, if u want i can email u pics of it so u can have a better look at the colour.

what is ur opinion...is it closer to red, or the regular burgundy color? send as many pics as u want...

hey i sent 11 pics of my current 33 and my old 33, both were that same red colour, i personally like the colour, and it happens that i sold my old 33 because the guy specifically wanted that colour because he had never seen it before..

speaking from experience.. agree with everything siksII said..

I think a lot of the "it must be under 100k" on condition (i.e. very good), still can be up around the 100 - 150k mark. You just have to look at a local car (taken care of course) to see this.

with cars u will always lose a bit, but obviously if u get it cheap to start with its a different matter. the price is good on that car u r looking at so as long as its a good car go for it...

i will bet that it has been resprayed, all the red ones have, the colour fades quicker than others when left in the sun for years, so have a good look at the paintwork make sure its not too messy.

the guy selling it doesnt speak the best english, and doesnt seem to keen on answering questions etc....but yeah...i never really wanted a red/burgundy/white 1....im lookin for a black/gun metal/ dark grey 1....

actually thinking of importing now...just a bit wary of gettin screwed! anyone know anything about j-spec imports?

I think skyline's are one of very few cars, like ferraris, lambos etc, that look pretty good in whatever colour you get it in :P

back on topic; so there's no way to know if the KM's are real or not? it's bloody scary when you have to just 'hope' the stats you're given are legit especially on an expensive, imported car

hey, i dont think you should import, as you will not know the condition of the car until it arrives. fair enough u will save some money, but best to buy one locally if you know exactly what condition of car you want. its not like there is no choice locally...

once again ill mention, in pics cars always look good. even if the paint was shit in real life it will look good in pictures.

since that car was complied under the new system i very much doubt it would have been in an accident, so i would not worry about that.

so yeah, dont import if u are picky with condition, also who wants to wait months....

    • Sounds good.  I don't 100% understand what your getting at here. When you say, "I keep seeing YouTube videos where people have new paint and primer land on the old clearcoat that isn't even dulled down" do you mean this - there is a panel with factory paint, without any prep work, they paint the entire panel with primer, then colour then clear?  If that's what you mean, sure it will "stick" for a year, 2 years, maybe 3 years? Who knows. But at some stage it will flake off and when it does it's going to come off in huge chunks and look horrific.  Of course read your technical data sheet for your paint, but generally speaking, you can apply primer to a scuffed/prepped clear coat. Generally speaking, I wouldn't do this. I would scuff/prep the clear and then lay colour then clear. Adding the primer to these steps just adds cost and time. It will stick to the clear coat provided it has been appropriately scuffed/prepped first.  When you say, "but the new paint is landing on the old clearcoat" I am imagining someone not masking up the car and just letting overspray go wherever it wants. Surely this isn't what you mean?  So I'll assume the following scenario - there is a small scratch. The person manages to somehow fill the scratch and now has a perfectly flat surface. They then spray colour and clear over this small masked off section of the car. Is this what you mean? If this is the case, yes the new paint will eventually flake off in X number of years time.  The easy solution is to scuff/prep all of the paint that hasn't been masked off in the repair area then lay the paint.  So you want to prep the surface, lay primer, then lay filler, then lay primer, then colour, then clear?  Life seems so much simpler if you prep, fill, primer, colour then clear.  There are very few reasons to go to bare metal. Chasing rust is a good example of why you'd go to bare metal.  A simple dent, there is no way in hell I'm going to bare metal for that repair. I've got enough on my plate without creating extra work for myself lol.

    • Bit of a similar question, apprently with epoxy primer you can just sand the panel to 240 grit then apply it and put body filler on top. So does that basically mean you almost never have to go to bare metal for simple dents?
