Hey guys

If I remove my old fuel pump and replace it with the bosch 040, will it provide enough fuel pressure to bypass my ECU protection (rich retard) for up to 14 psi? So basically I'm going to increase the fuel presure and tune it with the safc so I can bypass the ecu protection so I can run higher boost with the rb25det flat spot.

Car: R33

relevent mods, full 3" exhaust, safc, cooler kit

So I'll have to retard it slighty a bit then, you were saying that saying in a previous post of mine.

Bit of a Band-Aid, but if it works I'll be happy for now until I get a real computer.

Well I'll give it a shot and post up some results... Most likely get something up next weekend..

Why crank up the pressure? By doing that, when you tune the safc you will be taking out even more fuel and so the ecu is looking at a lower point in the maps and so it will be running more timing (than if you maintain stock pressure)and will be more likely to ping under load.

If your having R&R then the only option to try if you really don't want to shell out a few more $$ for a pfc is to crank up fuel pressure and pull out even more volts from the afm, as a result using a lesser load point shooting 'just' under the R&R area of the map.

It is more likely to ping, but if done carefully you can gain more power. If it doesn't ping then your on to something good.

BUT I don't see this usefull for a car with a std turbo as you really don't want to be pushing the turbo past 12psi.

Highflow.. yes it may help.

I will be using a dual boost controller, so only 5psi as a daily driver and 13 psi after 4500 rpm.. I will only be using 13psi for less than 14 secs at a time so the turbo should last for a bit.. :D I pretty confident 13psi should be fine as a my mates VL with rb25det is running 13psi with turbosmart bleed valve and the turbo is still kicking strong after 1yr of heavy daily abuse..

well, I have ordered the 040 and hopefully I get it before the weekend.

I hope I can get this tuned with the CAS and the SAFC alone. Hopefully I won't need to get a malpassi or some other rising rate fuel pressure regulator..

pump has arrived :D ...

Has anyone taken the fuel tank lid off? I tried getting this off a while ago. I had to get a hammer and rod to try an move the lid - very tight and ony move 2 cm. Anyone know of an easy way to get it off?

Umm - problem people have is that when they lean of the mixtures via the SAFC that it pulls it to another load point that adds more ignition advance. If you richen the mixture up by more fuel pressure you are in fact making the case worse!! Like someone else has said. You don't need more fuel pressure unless you have a fuel problem already - they usually run very rich!!

So, this is VERY interesting....

Ive gone ahead and bought a 040 Bosch fuel pump, and am having high pressure fuel lines installed, along with an Apexi SITC (super ignition timing converter), along with a Nismo fuel pressure adjustable regulator, and along with a Z32 Air Flow Meter (I think thats all!!!). This is happening next Tuesday at Graham West Workshops in SA.

Car already has an Apexi fmic, a Apexi SAFC, a full 3inch exhaust with hiflow cat, a K&N pod filter, yadayadayada....

So, having just read this thread, would it be more helpful then for the original poster to be using this tuned SITC piggyback computer? I was on the thinking that this would be a great thing to do before I hiflow the turbo next year.

My car is an auto and I wont be installing a PFC. The SAFC stays along with the SITC.

Any input or suggestions?

Cheers (sorry to hijack thread, thought it might help both of us mate!).

Brendan

I'm hoping retarding the the timming will help... As I said before I have seen it done and the car is very quick!

So (paulr33), would a Super Ignition Timing Converter piggyback computer help in this instance, with tuning the SAFC? I think they are +/- 20 degree ignition advance / retard.

Cheers, Brendan

Yes you could retard the base timing but then you are retarded at areas that could do with some more advance.

First of all you need the SAFC to change the AFM values so you dont go into rich and retard mode. If you add more fuel pressure than normal you are making it a lot harder for yourself as you will have to retard the timing further = loss of response!!

it sounds like it would. having not used either and only knowing the basics of both it sounds logical. sydneykid was doing the same setup in his stagea as it was auto as well. the stock ecu rich and protects comes from the airflow meter measuring too high, presumably near 4.5volts ish i would guess ? if you however below this with the safc and the adjust the timing with the sitc then it should be a fairly good comprimise.

Max AFM is either 5.16 or 5.06 volts (thats what my tuner tells me for the R33 series 2). Mine is at 4.95volts after tuning via SAFC, with 141kw at the 4wheels in my STAGEA.

Thats right, following SK's footsteps. I think the SAFC is tuneable at 7 points in the rev zone, whilst the SITC is tuneable at 5 points in the rpm zone.

My injectors were at 76% duty cycle. Ive gone the adjustable fuel pressure regulator path due to not wanting to put in larger injectors. I figured putting more pressure (up to 10psi more over standard; with high-pressure fuel lines ppls!!) would be a cheaper move than larger injectors.

Thanks Paul & Ben for you comments. At the moment with my fmic install 2 weeks ago I reckon by feel Im in the rich / retard mode........

Hey rmahnovetsky, maybe you should get a SITC too! They are on ebay for around $200US but havent been made for a few years, so most are 2ndhand via Japan (I got one of the last ones brand new for $220).

I found that an R34 gtt cooler was enough to put mine into rich and retard mode at 9psi. Previously with R33 cooler it was ok.

I hnow have a PFC running 10psi and base map. I am up around 4.91v volts and injectors are at 84%. I'm getting a tune soon though and hope the injector duty cycle will drop a little...as apparently they run rich on the base map. Its not blowing out much smoke though at full throttle.

BK - what boost are you running??

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
