hi guys

i'm still learning about these cars and i'm having some problems with my PFC. my knock sensor light (engine light) will come on from time to time when i'm boosting it, also comes on if i drop the clutch at hi rpm from standing still. when i went back to the guys who installed it they said it was fine. i have since spoken to another mechanic who said that its been set up wrong and i should not get the light on at all if is tuned properly.....so now i'm very confused.

My car is a series 1.5 R33 GTST it has the following mods;

air filter

3inch turbo back exhaust

front mount cooler

Walbro fuel pump (second mechanic said i need fuel reg as well)

turbo smart bleed valve set at 13.5psi (but doesn't hold it)

and of course a PFC

the car made a 182RWK (i was told by the guys who tuned the PFC that it will make more (around 200) once i get proper boost controller that will hold the boost pressure)

also i'm running a standard turbo

Can some1 plze me help..........i'm very confused and i don't want to kill my car

cheers guys

13.5psi will fry the turbo. best to turn it down to about 11-12psi at the max. it wont make any more power at 13.5psi but it will make stacks more heat. the fuel pump's flow ratings are rated at 15volts and your skyline (assuming stock wiring only runs 14volts, or even 13) so it wont be flowing at the rating the pump is rated at, so be careful there.

the engine warning light will come on for 3 different reasons. in summary airflow meter, injector max, and knock over 60. the powerfc faq covers all 3 and how to diag / test for which one you are seeing, i suggest you read this and do some quick tests to find if in fact the warning you are seeing is a knock high warning or the other warnings

hhmm... the knock sensor light is coming on hey. 3 flashes?

Have you ever considered that THE CAR MAY BE KNOCKING?

"Guys, I coated my floor with grease, and now I keep slipping over. Why could that be?"

Take it to a decent mechanic and get it tuned properly at 11psi - 12psi before you kill your turbo and motor.

Until then, DON'T hammer your car. You WILL kill it.

i got told by unique motor sports in castle hill the light comes on because the power fc is set up to have the apexi boost controller and if you dont the computer wont be reading right so go through and turn the boost of of the ecu and it wont turn on i havent done this yet but its what i was told

Just a side question - my car has flashed the engine light near 5600rpm when I hit the rev limiter. I have the rev limit set to that at the moment. Does it ever flash if you hit rev limit? Knock on the controller was less than 40 peak when this happened.

Set the rev limit low as I haven't had a tune yet

Cheers

The light also flashes when your injectors max out. This is at 0.5 sec intervulls (vs 0.1 sec for knocking). When my car was getting rd tuned my injectors were maxing out at 6500rpm (9:1 afr will do that)

I'll finish the Power FC manual traslation over the holidays, and give it to paulr33 to host (if he wants).

Engine light will only flash if (any) of the following 3 items occur

airflow meter max out - reads 5.0volts

injectors duty max out - 98%

knock level too high - default is 60 at any one time

Nothing else that I know of will cause the engine light to flash in the PowerFC.

Bounce off the rev limiter all you like, it wont make the engine light flash.

I believe the car won't start if you have boost control kit enabled and aren't actaully using it / don't have it plugged in but in may in fact have the engine light permenantly on (always) if its activated and not being plugged in

well, running almost 1 bar of boost on a stock turbo on a "tuned" powerfc, I can say its got a 70% chance of knocking.

The other 30% I can bet the AFM is maxing out due to the stupid amount of boost and airflow ripping through it. At 210rwkw (12psi), my injector duty cycle never went above 80%, but the AFM maxed at 6500rpm many many times. (rev limiter was at 7200)

Thank god I have an ace tuner.

And I will say again; after 12 months of 210rwkw, and a fair bit of "spirited" driving, compression tests came back at 169psi accross all cylinders, with 2% leak down.

Oh, and Paul is right, if the boost control kit is NOT installed (or not functioning), and it's turned on, the car won't start. (most likely to prevent an overboosting disaster).

u forgot one basic thing!

TIMING! ADVANCE TIMING IF NOT TUNNED PROPERLY WILL GIVE U KNOCK!

IF IT PINGS WHEN JUST ABOVE 0- ON YOUR GAUGE THEN CHANCES ARE TIMING !

but i could be wrong...evil laugh bbbwwaahhhhhhhhhhhhh..

okay my 2cents worth

or coil packs might be failing!

the powerfc faq gives complete information on how to debug each of the "engine" flash symptoms. im well aware of knock and how its timing related, the guide states this also

well im glad u can read but i was offering advice not to you but to the person that asked it. :P

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
