Or you could buy the genuine Nismo GT500 block off me, spend $20,000 on parts and labour going nuts building the thing and have some beer money left over comapred to the price of those Series 3 engines. plus you'd own a hell of an engine!

Having a look at the latest Tomei catalogue in my hot little hands right now the Series 2 Genesis engine is probably old stock as they have been selling the Series 3 for about 6 months now. The series 3 complete long engine is $37,000 US and includes small partsand no trade in. I could get you a 2.8 Step 2 or 3 built for HKS for less and include a new N1 block ! So 20 odd k for the Series 2 is a pretty good buy. Shit for the price of Jet Star ticket you could come out and inspect the thing yourself.

R31 Nismoid I think you have to put it in perspective. Yep a few bad apples do come out of Japan, probably some young machinist more concerned on what hair gell he will put in his hair for his poofy hair style or what gay clothes he's going to buy but if Tomei was continually sending sub par engines and engine parts out they would be out of business here faster than you can blink an eye. Theres no way a company could get away with that in Japan, they'd be crucified ! I totally agree with you in that there are examples of not up to standard quality of parts that get exported. And you would have to be mad not pull en engine down and check its all together right when paying $20,000 plus ! Having just had an 2.8 engine built here on Japan by HKS , I can say that the quality of their work is second to none ! They are meticulous on their quality of work. They dont want a customer paying good money for an engine to come in and say its f@#ked due to sub par workmanship... But..and its a big but , I live here and was able to watch over the build from day 1 to completion plus I earn yen so for me the costs were the same as if I was in Oz and getting it built by top engine builder there whilst earning aussie dollars. I've had a few engines (V8's for Hot Rods) built in Oz in the past that have let go due to less than perfect assembly, others that seemed invincible. Other friends who have built big HP engines for drag and Hot Rods who have had them let go early, some last forever and these are no expensive engines built by top engine builders. Thing is there is some bad apples but in Japan there's very little and those that are get smashed quickly. The thing is I agree with you that you would have to be crazy or too much coin than sense to get something built here and not be able to check whats going on. If I was in oz would I get another engine built by a top Jap Tuning shop..mmm probably not as there's definitely as due to the costs involved, plus I want to see where my coins going and no avenue for recourse if something did go wrong !! I would definitely get my head work done here in Japan. The quality of work is insane, compared to oz it was cheap for labour for port and polish and they put ridiculous hrs into it to get it perfect. I took some pics but wasnt allowed to take pics of finished job as they reckon there were some things done that are top secret .. Yeah yeah, wank wank, looked the same as any big port job.. Out of interest what would a Race Pace built 2.8 engine with same specs as the Tomei cost to build ?? Just to throw a spanner in the works to T REX... I have a New GT 500 block in storage that I would part with. Have that sent to oz, buy a 2.8 kit and get a reputable engine builder in oz to build you a pretty well bullet proof engine well block would be,. Although it will end up throwing nearly an extra $10,000 on the price tag...Food for thought

They had 2 of their 35's out the front but said no pics. While I was in the workshop sussing the 34 the misso snuck a few pics of their 35's Ok more tomorrow

Ok here we go with some more... After spending the night in Aomori we hit the road again..Yep more snow but the new 2.8 was cruising on the highway! Finally we were out of snowy highway driving and onto some clean roads..pit stop time! Finally after 350 km's we got to Sendai..and still another 370km's to Tokyo Late arvo early evening and an hour to Tokyo Highway Toll ticket..that puppy was 13,550 yen fro 720 km's and 9 and half hour trip. Highway use in Japan is bloody expensive. Yey Tokyo...ya definitely need the Navi here ! Pachinko Advertising Sign.. Tokyo traffic jam Ok Stayed on the outskirts of Yokohama as got soem friends out there. Next morning off to Mines via the scenic route. Quick stop and stretch the legs and fill her up Jap style ! This was part of the Japanese Royal families Summer beachside estate. So finally arrived at They werent doing Auto Salon as booths there are getting too expensive. A few other big names pulled the pin this year and rumour is a few more wont be doing next years Auto Salon. But they were letting people have a look around the workshop and out there was the original famous Mines GTR34.

Thought I'd throw up photos of a different perspective of a trip to Tokyo Auto Salon. This is drive was from the top of Japan from Sapporo to Tokyo and back via Auto Salon and workshops etc..I had to do a run in programme on the new motor, was limited to sweet FA boost and 4500 RPM limiter but still cruised the highways aound the 140kph.. Its a bit of a mix as some pics taken by me and some by the misso on her camera. Between us there's about 1500 plus pics so will take some time to sort through the rubbish but I'll post up pics as I go through them.. So here we go.... Warming the car up ready to leave Sapporo after a morning of snow View from inside the car looking out from my street !! First Toll Gate View on the road First Rest Stop cop In Shit...GTR's are without doubt the best car I have driven in the snow and ice. And yes the car gets washed every time on the road !! After a wash At Ferry Terminal. It was -8c and strong will with wind chill of -20c so so f@#king cold !! Waiting to board the ferry... The crew were paranoid that I couldnt get on as front lip is pretty low but it was sweet, just got on without scraping! Going from Hakkodate in Hokkaido to Aomori on top of Honshu. Ferry comfort Jap Style.. 4 hrs later and land ho...lights of Aomori Heading back down into the belly of the ferry to a very cold GTR Aomori and more bloody snow !! Ok thats it for now...will load more later !!

Yeah I was talking to Jap mate who went out friday night and said fri was good. Carpak was packed Sat night but ccps were anal about shutting it down. Pretty funny to listen to them telling everyone " could you please return home, if not we will come to your house and have a talk with you" Technically in Japan they cant really do a thing to you but tell you to move on but on the other hand technically they can throw you in the slammer for a month without laying any charges on you. Thus the reason everbody bails !! There was some fast cars flying on the highways last night but no fun for me with limiter kicking in at 4000rpm on new engine tune. Yeah Japanese can have some of the worst customer service at times. Mines could have made that alot more customer friendly. E.g free coffee, maybe some bargain specials, just be a bit more open. It was an open day after all !! Even being able to speak Jappa to them and not the first time there, they were hard to get much enthusiasm out of them. After having a good yak to them and them saying about not doing Auto Salon due to costs and economic woes you think you be doing your best to attract potential customers. But thats the Japanese way. Live here long enough an you'll understand, same way you'll understand what its like to bang ya head against a wall everyday. Got some good pis of the 34 and the misso got some sly pics of both the 35's.

Yeah I was out at Mines this arvo and was haivng a good chat and they reckon they pulled the pin due to the cost of a booth these days at the Salon and globl economic woes. A few others have done the same and for some other big names this will probably be their last. Went to Daikoku Futo there were heaps of cars and couldnt get in !! Cops came and shut it down real early! Just did a few laps in the GTR around the place and watched a bit of the cop battle from outside . Everyone was heading to another car park out at Ibaraki but headed back to hotel via a few highway runs. Pretty dissappointing its over so bloody early these days!!

Cheers fellas !! Just got into Yokohama an hour ago and cracking another beer aka medicine! Got the Ferry over to the top of Honshu and drove all day to Tokyo. Left Aomori this morning and was dumping snow but the new grumpy beast was like a cop in shit and had no trouble. HKS guys have done a run in tune setup and limiter is set at 4000rpm and very low boost but was able to cuise the highway sitting on 130-140kph all the way down. Matt I've been to Auto Salon a few times but first time bringing my 33 with me. Not sure yet but either go to Mines open day tomorrow and Salon on Sunday or other way round. I'm staying just down the road from Daikoku Futo so will be hitting that tomorrow and will take heap of pics and some video. When I get back the car will have the boost ramped up and more tuning of Fcon then bit more driving and final dyno run at full boost plus we are going to set a scramble boost of 2 Bar on boost controller for those 30 secs hits of fun. Then it will be time to throw some body parts on. I've got new genuine 400R front Bar and Nismo lip to go onbut want to do it when the car gets to OZ so they'll be going over in a container with a bunch of other parts and wheel sets. I'll try upload some pics of Auto Salon etc over the weekend.. -
Just rocked into Tokyo , a quick burn round the city and kicking back with a beer and about to head out for a feed. Either going to Mines open day tomorrow and Auto salon Sunday or vica versa but I'll be definitely at Daikoku Futo on Saturday night. My hotel is about 10-15mins away. Looking forward to a good weekend!

We had to do some mods on it but that was due to turbo setup. looks real sweet in the flesh. Car is being dynoed as I type and should be ready for pickup on Monday and a run in drive to Auto Salon...Cant bloody wait!! -

Hks Japan 2.8 Engine Build
elrodeo666 replied to elrodeo666's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
Honestly they were pretty impressed with the workmanship but there were a few mods to be done to make it all fit which isnt the japanese way, it wasnt a straight fit. Here it should come from the maker and fit straight off the bat.. thats how they do business here and thats why some parts are expensive.. Barr that,... that they are looking forward to tuning and seeing what differences there are are if any against jap manufacturers.. Personally I think they will be suprised We are going to do first tune this fri and sat then its holiday time here until Jan 4th. Then some more dyno tuning and then taking the car down for Tokyo auto salon and some fun and more road tuning on the highways... Japanese tuning maybe more conservative but a hell of alot more fun..!! -

Thanks Richard.. Can you or anyone clear something up for me.. is running the Bov to atmo illegal in OZ ??? -
Hey Richard Sweet as, I would have done it faster but had terrible hangover that has lasted for days. Definitely be interested in doing a price comparison. I have been receiving bills in stages and conveniently put them somewhere where I dont dee them as not to die of heart attack. Got to say though that HKS have been brilliant and have given me a few 100,000yen discount and freebies. Just got my side skirts refreshed and painted and Nismo oil seperator for free and all along the build there have been trade discounts and freebies.
