Twilight Club Sprint @ Calder Park - Feb. 5th
Snowman replied to Downforce's topic in Archived Events
I'm out of the country but I'm still around!! I wanted to bring up the structure of the club championship at the next next club meeting. This will be before the 1st event. Anyways... the biggest issue is the number of people we will have competing. There won't be many in the first year especially so we can't have too many classes. I find it hard to believe there will be many more than 10 of us at each of the events. If Im wrong I'd be happy. These days for those of us that competed last year was more about getting out there and having some fun and improving our own driving than any real competition anyways. But - my initial thoughts were to have 4 classes. 1. RWD - Standard 2. RWD - Modified 3. AWD - Standard 4. AWD - Modified. The definition to Modified meant a modification to the fuel system. So basically as long as you are still running the standard fuel pump and injectors you would be classed in the Standard Class. I know cheater tyres play as bigger part in lap times as HP but most competitions don't seperate them in classes as they are all "street legal". Anyways - feel free to discuss this here. To cover some other points - oil coolers - I believe they are more necessary on GTR's than GTST's to begin with. I may be wrong on that however. But as stated - this first event is at Calder. Average laps are around the 1.05 - 1.15s mark (or 59s if your name is Ben) and you will only get 3 flying or flat out laps. So thats less than 4 mins of high operating temps so at this track in particualr oil temp issues may not be so bad. Phillip Island where lap times over 2min are the norm may be different. AS for if you should start with a sprint day - well I did. I didn't push myself and I just placed myself in a slow group and spent the first half of the day following slower cars and learning the racing lines before trying to go off on my own and improve my times. Having said that - the wrx club offer a training group in their sprint days where you won't get timed and you have the chance to have an instructor with you. It also costs slightly less than the normal sprint day (but you dont get to compete in the super sprints at the end of the day). I also have to find out still if this is available to non wrx club members. -
Twilight Club Sprint @ Calder Park - Feb. 5th

This will be the first event that comprises the SAU Vic track club championship. All SAU Vic members are able to participate. As I'm also a WRX Club member I will be informed as soon as sup reqs are available so will post them up. And hopefully some of my new xmas pressies will be ready for it too.... -
I spoke to him before xmas and he said he was only taking the week between xmas and NYE off.
-
Just so you know I am in Canada until the 12th. Also - my car currently lacks a gearbox, drive shafts, front paipe, and far too many nuts and bolts. I have no idea when it will be back in once piece. Otherwise I'd have been happy for James or someone to go get it. However, Greg already has some pretty darn good shots of my car from the day we did with me and noof. Also - James has some decent super high res piccies from the Dutton that might look cool too.
-
What about Rosco's car (Purple R32). Even Archies 32 is sweet.
-
Alright all you jolly good people - have a safe, fun and most enjoyable xmas. May Santa bring you and your rides nice fun little pressy's!! I'm off to have a white xmas in Canada with my in-laws (apparently it's forecast to be -18deg tomorrow!) so I will see you all in a few weeks for what should be another great year.
-
I think the heat got him. BTW - what the fark happened to Anthony (heartbrkr). You were there and then you weren't! LOL.
-
Haha - well if the truth is known it was probably 25% my brakes getting soft and 75% me out braking myself. But I had to work my ASS off to get past Golgo in the first place - I wasn't about to let him past again just because he had a shit load more HP than me! LOL. And keeping Golgo at bay was a lot easier than keeping Scotsman in his even more powerfull, more set-up GTR with cheater tyres. Still managed to keep him behind me for a couple of laps. I was possibly going a little beyond the 70% driving capabilities for those laps however. Still - my impressions on the rex have changed a little since the fist time. Maybe having the extra cars around to give me a better comparison helped but they go alright. But as far as non-skylines go - that Yellow Evo 8 looked a damn impressive peice of machinery.
-
I must say I thought it was great fun. I actually really enjoy these fun days. I think the extra cars make for a little more excitement. If the track was empty and there was no timing it would get rather dull. Or maybe Im just an idiot! LOL. But I had some good little battles in my rex with firstly Golgo, a little race prepped Mirage, then trying to keep Scotsman at bay. And dispite not being the fastest car out there the little rex sure gave it heaps through the S's. Seeing the death of the RB20 special was very very sad. I sure hope it's just a 2004 thing rather than a Vic thing for you mate and next year you will come back and knock em dead.
-
LOL - I put this thread up especially for you actually mate! But yeah Goj I think the Sunny T-Bar is where it'll be at. My snowboarding skills are even worse than my driving skills. Still - I'll give that back basin a shot. I mean - whats the worst that can happen??
-
Ok - I have the great pleasure of spending a bit over a week in the Canadian Rockies over New Year in Jasper, Banff and Lake Louise. But I was just looking over the Lake Lousie Trail maps and I'm left with a very tuff decison - which run to do first???
-
Or try race brakes and tell them you are a wrx club member. (They get discounts)
-
My car is like yours currently Robin. Mine is plugs. Soon as I hit 1 bar the car runs crap.
-
That would be clarkey's car. Yeah it's really nice.

Turbo's, Lag and Gearboxes.
Snowman replied to Snowman's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Ok - so what this comes down to is forget the gears - on a 2.6L RBDETT 2530's are as big as the engine can use and so unless there is an increase in capacity or in usable RPM (say upto 9,000rpm) Im not going to generate more power with bigger turbo's so there's no point even thinking about it. Cause the plan was to also incorperate some JUN 87mm pistons and 260/260 poncams with the engine - but thats still really a 2.6L engine. -

This fact I am obviously aware of. But the reason for my thinking here is say currently Chris and I have a basically identical set-up other than the differeneces between the 33 and 34. Corners like turn 4 at Sandown and Phillip Island I can take in 3rd whilst he takes in 2nd. This is simply because I stay on boost in 3rd for these corners and there is an advantage to having one less gear change in there for me. Now say they are 80km/hr corners (based upon the gear ratio chart Roy sent me 80km/hr for me in 3rd is 4,000rpm which is about what those corners are for me). In 2nd gear 80km/hr is at 5,500rpm. I would expect the GT-RS's to be running with decent boost at that figure? Ok - say at Winton after the 3 hairpins you come out of the last one at 60km/hr in 2nd. That is say at 4,250rpm. There is roughly 200m to that big left hander (long track). Say as you come out of the corner the 2530's are on boost - but the GT-RS's don't come on until 5,500rpm. Given that 2nd gear has a raito of 2.36:1 - how much time really would elapse before it came on boost? And if say given an extra 30kw's of power over the 2530's - which car would reach the left-hander 200m away first? (I really don't know the answer to this which is why Im asking the questions!). -

Yeah shifting at 8,000rpm. Tyres are 265/35/18. -
Chances are I'm way off track in my thinking and that I have been hanging around Roy for too long - but I have a quick question for the experts in regards to turbo lag variances with the different skyline gearboxes. I am looking at upgrading my turbo's next year. The car is used mainly on the track so I was also looking for response. Having said that down in Vic (not sure about other states) there is a definite advantage to having extra HP in many cases. My initial thoughts were to go with the ever faithfull 2530's. They have been tried and tested and I know they are great. But having said that MOST of the track cars I know are 32/33's. I know recently markr34gtr has put some GT-RS on his car and he seems to think they are great. Now guys like SK have said that they are perhaps still a little too laggy. Which got me thinking - below are the different gear ratio's for the different GTR's. R32 / R33 5 Speed R34 Getrag 6 Speed 1st - 3.21 1st - 3.83 2nd - 1.93 2nd - 2.36 3rd - 1.30 3rd - 1.69 4th - 1.00 4th - 1.31 5th - 0.75 5th - 1.00 6th - N/A 6th - 0.79 Final - 4.11 Final - 3.55 So 3rd and 4th on the 32/33's are basically the same as 4th and 5th on the 34. Which leaves the 34 with basically an extra gear in the lower range - which is really where response becomes the issue in track racing. Would it then stand to reason that it would be easier to keep "laggier" turbo's on boost with an R34 than it would be with an R33. Or basically could you say that GT-RS lag on an R34 would be similar to an R33 with 2530's - ON A TRACK?? Im not really worried about standing start lag, or normal street driving lag here. Or am I missing something important in my thinking?

What comes with owning a GTR?
Snowman replied to pentae's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
For Me. Cons. Upkeep costs. The constant want to spend more money than you have. Driving in traffic. The constant worry about defect potential. Kids and their annoying questions (Does it have NOS? You reckon you could beat a Ferrari in a race? etc) Pros Amazing to drive. This fact alone out weighs all cons. Getting to always be in the fastest group at track days! Having the most satisying hobby - and knowing there is always MORE than can be done. Knowing that I don't have to like drifting as a sport because I dont have traction issues. The escape from the wife when she's being annoying. -
Basically they just make sure you car isnt going to fall appart on the race track. Its very basic.

There is a special "skylines" service station at Benella which is 10mins drive away. Because you will probably get LOTS of track time you will need up to 2 tanks of fuel for this day. Its prolly a few cents more than Melb. But not heaps more. There is scruiteneering - its VERY basic and doesnt take long. I can garantee it won't start at 9:30am. The head of the Benella Auto Club does this REALLY annoying speach before the event about the whole AASA v CAMS thing thats boring as all hell and goes for ages. But he does it every time. Leaving the start of the Hume at 7:00am will be perfect.

Bec - different Troy! The one helping me is ylwgtr2 - the drunk one you will be stuck with is Roy!
-
Ok - unfortunately Im out of the Sat night Wang special. And its all Adz's fault. Due to his car being such a pain the only time Troy has available to pull my box out is Sat night. So I will have to come down with the Sunday morning crew.

Dave - basically right on 2hrs from the start of the Hume.
