  1. AFAIK its only a theory - but one I agree with. stagea always seem to be 20% down on power compared to equiavlent gtst even when run in 2wd. Might put up my hard earned and get my old stagea cams measured.
  2. BTW Paul thanks for the reminder. I added my engine blow ups to the engine death thread. As I said none were related to oil control problems - since the first motor I've build (using Gary's recommendations from the first post in this thread), I've had no oiling problems. #1: first motor http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...t&p=1119558 #2: washer thru the turbos http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...t&p=2541082 #3: fuel pump earth http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...t&p=3498277 #4: radiator http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...t&p=3717505 #5: cracked block/oil gallery in 2nd hand block http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...t&p=4158984 #6: cam clearance (oil pump) http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...t&p=4696960 #7: crap in head galleries (cam snapped) http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...t&p=4696968 Its a bit sad where this thread has gone. last few pages arguing about vent vs drain (not whether it is a good idea or not) has not really added anything except confusion.
  3. engine #7 Engine/Car: rb26dett / r32 gtr Type of failure: 67 klm, on its way to the dyno, exhaust cam snapped at the timing gear. bent valves. Factors influencing the failure: well, good question. turned out there was insufficient oil flow to the front of the exhaust cam so it siezed. which in turn was caused by crap in the oil gallery which blocked it. State of tune of the engine: standard except for cam gears and computer. approx 250kw Suspension and tyres: bilsteins, kumho v70A. Oil used and service interval: mineral run in oil General comments: I haven't seen another oil gallery blockage issue in this thread, but it does happen. since then the engine shop has been drilling and checking heads and has found at least some crap in more than half of them, also a random head that was put on my stagea had also had it's oil galleries drilled out for cleaning previously.....be warned....
  4. This thread has been too quiet lately - Paul reminded me I owe a couple of updates: engine #6 Engine/Car: rb26dett / r32 gtr Type of failure: 2000 klm and 2 race meets, oil pump failed and badly damaged all bearings. Factors influencing the failure: wasn't really clear at first, the oil pump was smashed but not sure why. Oil analysis said there was aluminium in the oil *before* the bearings spun. after re-assembly the clearance of the cams were checked and found to be way too tight which was the real issue. State of tune of the engine: standard except for cam gears and computer. Suspension and tyres: bilsteins, kumho v70A. Oil used and service interval: really can't remember.....change it every race meet tho. Also, you get an amazing amount of bearing metal everywehere when an oil pump dies. General comments: Brand new block, crank, it was pretty sad. Strangest of all these cams had been fine in this head right back to motor #2 in this thread. They were sent to a shop for measuring and I think the wrong ones came back (and I should have checked). very expensive mistake but with quick rebuilds you only deal with what failed and don't 100% check everything.....
  5. lol famous last words... I've sort of been sooking since I missed this round as well. We did get that motor back together but a related problem saw the new one die pretty much straight away. At least we know the cause now In any case, the motor is back together and sealed so my next race will be the day/night meet (last one??) at Oran Park 1 August. Next state round is not until mid September at Wakie. There was a round on this weekend, and aren't the taxis going quick these days. Gus' new monaro did 1.46.5 in qualifying...bloody quick for a stock 2 door taxi. Jim ended up winning the round in his dinosaur. Best modern car was Gerry's evo 7 in 6th. As for the other categories....the BSM GTR was not out again, and as usual the sports sedan field was rubbish, 9 finishers in the last race. improved prod is struggling for entrants too with only 24 finishers between 2 fields (over and under 2l). And very sadly the over 2l improved prod quickest car was slower than the production cars quickest. Its basically a crap time for quanitity and quality of entrants in racing.
  6. Hi all, as Paul mentioned I am testing his data logger and EM2 at the moment (unfortunately limited track time lately but that is about to change). Setting up the basic inputs and warning lights is dead easy, and a great concept to only bring things that matter to your attention instead of hundreds a gauges which are hard to ready quickly on the straight, let alone in the tight bits. Yes there are other digitial dashes available but they are literally 2-5 times the price. I am logging the following to the data logger: GPS (speed, location), voltage, brakes on (brake switch), engine warning light/knock (ECU), throttle position, air/fuel, lateral g, longitudinal g, 4wd split, exhaust gas temp, 4 spare in, 4 spare out. And logging via the Engine monitor to the DL: Oil pressure, Oil Temp, Water Temp, Intake temp, Boost, Fuel Pressure, wheel speed (ECU/gearbox), rpm. Between those I get plenty of information about how the car/motor is running (eg oil pressure vs lat/long Gs and logs of oil pressure/oil temp v water temp v intake temp) and how I am driving (speed, max revs, throttle, brakes, Gs etc). Will be very interesting to put it all to use Paul....I'd love to see a IR receiver to trigger lap times, much easier than GPS.
  7. daytona 400 this morning. some of the historical footage is classic (door to door racing on a beach anyone???)
  8. surprised you didn't find it in th faq....but the PFC has the boost control kit turned on by default so if you arent using it you will get this error. somewhere in the handcontroller settings you can turn it off and the error will clear
  9. umm kind of, I got caught by the same thing....thought win64 would be good to try without realising how much doesn't run on it (like flash for instance). anyway, it comes with MS Virtual PC so I installed Win32 on a virtual machine and use that. Others might know a better way to do it?
  10. even worse on gtr, 400lb/ft. for some reason gtst is only 150 odd.
  11. yep its a normal bolt. letft loosy, righty tighty. could be vft though
  12. lol shan i don't mean to be picky but you cut the car in half the wrong way.... brad give me a bell when you're alive, I reckon its time we got my motor out of your garage
  13. Yep....they simply don't have enough bang to cause blow by Overall this discussion (while interesting) has covered a lot about something (excessive blow by) which isn't a big problem for most people... and no doubt of course that dry sump is the best option but that is not always available due to price or rules...
  14. as Stephen said....nope "In addition to the above, for Superkart races only, helmets bearing the Snell M2000 or M2005 standard are approved for use." this is the full list from here http://www.camsmanual.com.au/pdf/10_gen_re...dule_D_Q209.pdf AS1698 Snell SA95, SA2000, SA2005 SFI Spec 31.1, 31.2, 31.1A, 31.2A SFI Spec 24.1 - see Note (i)(d) E22 (with 03, 04 or 05 amendments) BS 6658-85 Type A and A/FR (incl. amendments) 8860-2004
  15. yeah I've run them for years in 2 different cars with no problems. nice and cheap and strong enough. Also their race series bearings are a good thing
  16. jesus, don't worry about that box, some bastard stole the whole back of your car!
  17. Yep, we've got Oran Park booked for Sunday 4/10 (sunday of the long weekend). We had to sort of choose between wakie and oran park so we went with oran park since we are all running out of chances to go there
  18. re lower pressure in the block than the head, not possible right? the pressure in the motor comes through blow by into the block, the air must vent upwards to the head and then out the breathers. There should be no significant pressure in the head apart from what came from the block - the only possible leakage point is the valve stem seals.
  19. paul, do you use the welsh plug fitting in the head for the vent/drain? You know it is well above the floor level within the head right, so with the welsh plug location you should expect stuff all oil to run down the line unless you have over 1cm standing oil in the top of the head. If so I'm not surprised it acts as only a vent for you, especially with high boost. Very similar to the comment from the engine builder a few pages back that honda put lips on some of their return passages to restrict oil movement and allow air instead. As for your "experiment"/detailed testing I think all you have proven is that motors have pressure in the crank case, especially at high boost. A better test would be to tee an extra hose with a tap into the return, run the motor for 20 min at 6000rpm and then open the tap and see if oil comes out. I've run this setup for years together with an extended sump and all I can say is that I have not had any oil surge/pickup issues, ever (yes I have had plenty of other issues but that is a different book). My drain is tapped into the head at the rear of the motor (exhaust side) as that is the low point when the motor is in the car. And of course I only run 12psi, but the motor does flat out 20min or even up to an hour at a time. BTW when considering when oil can flow down a hose against acceleration remember that acceleration Gs are much lower than braking Gs, and a circuit car will see both. Drag is pretty irrelevent to this dicsussion because if you can pump enough oil into the head in 10 or 11 seconds to run out of oil in the sump you have other major issues. Finally, why didn't nissan make these changes over 15 years? simple there is no need to in a standard road car running 12psi.
  20. Hi Eric - yeah we booked wakie at the start of the year for that date as well as the day we ran in May - but we are running texi that day instead. Our next track day will be Oran Park in early October. So...come along and give the 4wd a thrashing at texi instead
  21. so did you consider a quick search before posting? We had same question, same section even, yesterday http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Qu...p;hl=long+short
  22. PCD is right (ie they will bolt on ok) but I doubt they will clear the front brakes...
  23. BTW if anyone needs a settop box I've got an HD one for sale, $100, works fine. I just picked up a hdd recorder that had a built in tuner so I don't need the old tuner any more
  24. you've now overtaken pete as the person at the bottom of the "who I should lend my car to" list. good work on the win though
