Hi all,

I am with Famous car insurance. This year the premium was going to be $1500. I called HBF and they have quoted me $890 with an excess of $200. I am 27 and have a clean slate in terms of fines. Does this seem too good to be true. Is there any thing I should be looking out for. HBF is a big company so I can't imagine it to be dodgy in terms of claims etc.

Hopefully I have finally reached the world of normal insurance premiums.

Cheers

my wife drove my s15 into a tree 2 days after i had started my hbf policy

they wernt happy , but it happens and they paid out 8k in repairs , had undeclaired mods too . ive been with them 2 years sicnce then , no other problems or claims

some people have claimed their repairs are dodgy but I got choice of repairer and knew them personally so they did a great job .

to be honest the whole insurance industry pushes to keep repair costs down , youve just got to push back

I work for HBF and I'm insured with them, and as arkon has said, you get choice of repairer (as far as I know, I don't actually work in the car insurance side).

"HBF" don't have dodgy repairers, dodgy repairers are eveywhere, you need to make sure you take it to a reputable repair business, just like you'd make sure you got your car from a reputable dealership, or your meat from a reputable butcher, not just some cheap as chips backyard jobby.

The best way to decide would be to compare the 2 policy wordings. See which one suits you better. Famous is a specialist car insurer, HBF is not. But it all depends on what you want as to which was you go, only you know what you want and what suits you and your circumstances

Im with HBF, they will more than likely require your car to be valued, but most car yards can do that, I think all they really need is a price on a piece of paper with a letterhead really.

Price sounds about right. Im paying about $950 i think, 24yrs old and my mods are insured. 55% no claim bonus helps tho..

Does HBF let you protect you NCB? or do you have to wait a certain period b4 they will?

I'm with Shannons and I cannot make any claims in 2 years and then they will protect it. I pay about $790, but now cause of extras and mods I'm paying more!

Smurf, check that they can cover any amount of extras (if you intend on doing that down the track, eg stereo) the last place I was with only covered $1500 total for extras.

I'm with HBF and have been for years.

$950 for $55k cover. Helps to be an old Bast#rd.

They have always been efficient but haven't tested them for claims (touch wood) though.

Choice of repairers makes all the difference really especially if you know a panel shop you can trust.

I just rang and got declined because my car is considered heavily modified, which is totally ridiculas considering its a stock turbo and engine with just a few supporting mods.

I am already fully insured with just cars so its not like I give a shit.

But I am wondering how other people got insured with hbf?

HBF do insure imports.

I had comprehensive on a stock 32.

With my new 32 (lots of mods) I left HBF for Just Car which is more expensive and has a higher excess. Stupido.

I called HBF to get a quote for the highly modded 32 and got quoted a cheaper amount (than the stock32), i didnt need to list all mods and she assured me they would all be covered?!

Past experience-

Insurance Call Person: "no we dont insure imports"

Me: "but you insure my friends import vehicle"

Insurance Call Person: "they must have gone through a broker then"

Me: "no they organised it themselves"

Insurance Call Person: "sorry, we dont insure imports"

Me: "can you check with your supervisor or may I speak with them"

Insurance Call Person: "just one moment...are you there miss, i do apologise we can insure your imported vehicle"

(had this sort of conversation with two companies...strange)

I just got insurance thru Torque Underwriting(recomended by da guy at AutoWholesale near Causeway). Agreed value(not market), Choice of repairers, reasonable premium n the lowest excess and they will insure any mods, just make sure u list em. Only thing is u gotta be over 25 i think(check with em). 1300 369 769.

Cheers

I was with them, they were good as you say, but didn't cover more than $1500 for extras, things like stereos etc. I thought you could only go through brokers for them? I had to.

Generally speaking, any insurer with "Underwriting Agency" at the end of their name is only accessible through a broker.

I am pretty sure Torque is over 25's. Their vehicles are limited also. You could also try Unique, MB Prestige, Shannons, Dawes (may not do imports), gosh there are so many more that I can't remember right now (specialist car insurers)....At the end of the day, if you get stuck you know Just Car will insure pretty much anything.

Oh and for some interesting but somewhat irrelevant news, there is not a policy that covers you for motorsport, available through AMP. Yes, they will provide cover for competitive racing, driver training such as mc's, track days and so on. We have only recently signed a broker agreement with them though, and as yet have no idea on what the pricing is like. As they appear to be the only ones that do it though, you can bet your bottom dollar it won't be cheap

WTF?!?!

HBF quoted me $1470 per year for a heavily modified R32 for $18k.

I had to fax them an evaluation of the car listing all mods, and the evaluation was to be done by a licensed car dealer.

Why the hell was my quote so high? I have a good driving record, I was 38 at the time, though I had no NCB as this was my first attempt a MV insurance.

By the looks of it they don't know what they're doing.

I'd say it was due to you having no NCB....

I didnt go thru a broker. Just rang Torque direct on the no. above n they signed me up, i am over 25 tho n have a great record, 6yrs NCB. Hmmm... they didnt seem to mention that they wont cover mods over $1500 to me tho. Otherwise Just Cars was the next best quote i got.

    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drive beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch. I want to ask if this noise is from the throw out bearing or could it be the clutch assembly or disk att.xFliq87Gzw6kImKBVqDebXkj0fBqymk0JaYeP3_3SlM.mp4
