Yeppo .... One race for one win and then retired! 100% winning record. Such a shame ..... sorry fellas I am a great believer in the era of innovation ..... bring back ground effects I say. Ahhhh yes in those days corner speed was only dictated by the size of a mans jojones!

Sorry guys didn't mean to jack the thread. Just drifted off into an era when passing in F1 was not done in the pits.

Webber and RBR hmmmmmm I reserve my judgement until 2007 season

cheers

Gordon Murray was, in his time, amongst the very best of the F1 designers - up there with John Barnard & Harvey Postlethwaite.

As for the BT46B, well it wasn't really all that innovative, more a clever bodge around the rules. At the time ground effects was well and truly the focus of all the teams and to be really competitive you had to be on top of your aerodynamic game. Unfortunately Brabham at that time were running a flat 12 Alfa Romeo 3 Litre motor. The problem was that. compared for the ubiquitous DFV, the head of the Alfa motor took up space that was need for the underbody venturies that produced the downforce.

F1 had long had a ban on moveable aerodynamic devices. Gordon Murray argued that the primary purpose of the fan was not aerodynamic it was for cooling. It just, coinicidently, sucked all the air out from under the car. Eventually fans were banned as well as the BT46B.

For the record a Chaparral was the first car to use this innovation.

Also, Colin Chapman was a crook.

For those people who didnt see it cause the Hungarian Directoe was showing some other crap, this is how schumi and Nick came together in the chicane...

It sort of looks like Nick drove him out wide so he could get a better run out of the chicane, but schumi turned into him and bend his steering...

One thing thats really puzzling me about the last race was when schumi retired and they draged his car into the garage, i noticed that his tyres were absolutely, completely bald. I didnt think that was legal...

Doesnt the FIA have a law that says all tyres must have a minimum tread depth remaining in the tyre at all times? i tried to find a pic but got nothing...

Jesus you have to be as old as me! Being a huge Gordon Murray fan (no pun intended on the wording) I will categorically deny that the fan was used for anything other than cooling! 'n' besides it was never conclusively proven that it wasn't.

Also, Colin Chapman was a crook. ooooohhhhhh no another childhood myth destroyed! Have you no shame? Was that the Chapparel 2E that had the movable high mount rear wing?

Muz, absolutely it was for cooling. If you disconnected it the engine would overheat. It was entirely accidental that it produced huge amounts of downforce.

Sorry, but I was always a Ron Tauranac fan before I was a Colin Chapman fan. Ron had/has integrity, Chapman had, well would you buy a used car from him? I will dig it out later some time but when the judge on the Delorean scandal passed sentence on one of the Lotus managers he said in as many words that if Chapman hadn't died of a heartattack he too would be going to the big house....

I can recommend Ron Tauranac's biography, by I think, Mike Lawrence. It is called Brabham, Ralt & Honda or similar. I think the Pitstop bookshop in Perth has a few copies left at a knock down price. It's a good read.

Will have a look at the Chapparel book when I get home from work to see which model it was. Anyway, I always liked the McLaren Can-Am cars more....

ahh, i was about the bring up the old 6 wheeler... hehe love it. but when I think 6 wheel F1 car, I think Tyrell of course. who could forget this:

Tyrell_6_wheels.jpg

yes, the glory days of F1 seem to be behind us, not in front. but it still is a very special sport.

Talking of cheats and crooks ...... old Sir Frank wasn't past doing that sort of thing either!

Two version for you to ponder over.

Well, from what I understand, unlike the March version, the Williams car did actually have drive going to both sets of rear wheels... It was entirely legal, just didn;t work worth a damn.

There is a difference between creative interpretation of the FIA rulebook (which all the teams do from time to time) & flat out theft. Unfortunately, at the end, Chapman fell into the latter category.

It's a shame by the way that Williams had to give up on the Bin Laden sponsorship they had in 1980 or thereabouts.

Yes the second photo (not the stretched Alan Jones Car) actually ran a few years ago at an historic meeting and cleaned up and then at Goodwood a few times before being retired to the museum. The March version was simply a PR engineering exercise and was never taken seriously.

I had actually forgotten about the DeLorean scandal ( not on purpose)! and was that Saudi sponsorship you are talking about?

I am actually more of a big banger sports car (Can-Am types etc) than F1 afficiendo. Love the big Macs, 917's, Lola's, Elfins and all.

cheers

That applies to the grooved slicks. Not the intermediate tyres he was running at the time

hahahaha

it was the only car i saw with bald tyres so i brought it up... you'll still win at least one chamopinship so what are you worried about. And you'll have kimi next year!! .... the world is really against you

I didnt say the world was against, just the bad loser wingers who follow the fkn sht house pommy based fkn loser F1 teams-fk em-FORZA FERRARI-Micheal and Kimi in a red car next year on 'their' Bridgestones will wipe the floor with everyone and especially uncle Rons pathetic silver fkn shit boxes-BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA- now some one pass me the Galliano :)

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
