Well that's the hot topic around the ACT that i've been takling over with alot of the team....

I'm either going to spend 35k and buy a well built approx 400awkw R32, or buy an immaculate stock GTR for around 20k abd build it myself.

I've discussed this, in detail, with many of our local ACT crew but would like a wider audience to help on their thoughts and personal experiences.......

Hell of a lot cheaper to buy one already built. Have a look around at most highly modded cars which are for sale. You will find in probably every case that the sale price does not reflect what has gone into the car.

i'll prob go the worked one but how worked is it??

I mean is it a reliable 400awkw or can you only run that on the dyno and its 300kw the rest of the time or stuff will break??

What gear box does it have??

What clutch does it have??

Internally what has been done?? forgies??? cams?? etc...

A power figure isn't really enough to go on is what i'm saying. I'm sure there is plenty of gtr's with dyno reads that say there 400kw but doesn't mean your not going to have to spend big money to keep it there.

As others have mentioned, there's a big difference between cars that can make 400awkw once in a while and a car that can do it all day long.

I've built up a car (350rwkw - not 400rwkw), and I assure you you're better off buying somethign that someone else has spent their hard earned $$$ on.

I found I was jaded at the whole experience afterwards - because there's so many expenses that you just don't think about when you initially embark on the project.

If I had my time over again, I would have bought someone elses finished project.

Dude, you arent serious are you?

There is no way on this earth you'll find a 32 GTR for 20k that is in anything remotely close to even "reasonable" condition.

It'll be flogged and basically need a ground up rebuild thats going to cost you a truck load more than 15k, closer to 25-30 by the time you respray and replace every knackered part on it.

And where you get a "built 400awkw" 32 GTR for 35k ????

I'd love top know as thats pretty damn cheap.

Buy someones car thats already done, but be prepared to pay a lor more than 35k for a 400awkw reliable GTR of any model

First things first........

Yes you can buy an immaculate GTR for 20k.

Vspec2 ( a local member we all know) on the forums is currently selling his brothers 32GTR with 80,000 original km's (logbooks to prove it) with it's boost restrictor still in place and never boosted or modded for $21,800, in stunning condition.

There is another one on carsales.com for 22k with original low km's immac condition and a few small mods....so theres your first point gone.

Secondly......Wrxkilla just sold his fully built GTR with Tomei engine and way over 400awkw (reliable) for i think it was 34k.....second point gone....

I don't mean to come accross like a prick (and i fear i have) but don't treat me like an idiot. I know what i'm talking about, i'm sure you do too but you didn't need tocome accross so high and mighty.

Best way to get 400rwkw reliably is buying yourself a old school (cheap and light) car, putting the Holden LS2 V8 + trans (for 8K) and and putting in the APS twin turbo kit for around 10-13K (fitted and tuned).

Best thing with this is its all noise and emission legal so no hassle from the boys in blue.

Another good thing is that engine internals are all stock so you still have plenty of room to move with increased boost (past 9psi), increase displacement and mods to engine.

Easy,

If you have heaps of spare cash - buy a stock one and mod it

If you want a tough car - buy a modded one.

Maybe not quite as easy as that :P

I'm going to buy a modded one! I've spent too much on my GTST to even think about seriously modding a GTR from stock.

certainly didnt fall out.

if people are selling themselves out of the market then thats thier choice.

Just because a car "has" 400rwkw means squat mate in all honestly. Not going into any more as you seem to know whats going on...

And im certainly not getting into a discussion about what cars were worth what price and thier mods.

35k is a reasonable deposit.

Ya never get to use all those 400kw! I just picked up a R32 GTR and I am quite frustrated that I can't use it's 200wkw most of the time nor the great handling.

Would it be your daily driver?

For 35k look at a more modern evo or sti much easer to live with on a daily basis that a 400kw GTR.

PS: buying is cheeper than building (your time and money)

NAman: Property won't be an issue, I'm an agent, and will be buying both the car and house within the year.

It won't be my daily, I already have a good daily driver. I'll take it out on weekends, nights and occasionally when i feel like it.

I am concerned about being able to use the power, it's an objection a few people have raised since i've been thinking about it.

The option of an evo or STI is definately a bad idea, theres an incredible wrx going for sale at the moment for 37k.

But i' not passionate about them, i think we'd all agree we don't drive these cars because they are practicle and efficient, it's because they make us feel a certain way, and only a GTR would fill that gap. (perhaps i need to get laid lol)

I think buying a built GTR would be a great option, but inevitably it's someone elses ideas and effort that you have just purchased.

The main concern with buying an already built GTR is that i'd have to know that it has been built exceptionally well and is in great condition.

    • Just had this happen to me too.  R32 GTR.   Also broke "just before going out onto the track" - someone up there is looking out for us... Very scary since I was about to do a narrow street course with zero run-off and curbs everywhere. Many people on here upgrading to billet uprights and R35 bearings?   Or buying new OEM knuckles?  I am not keen to replace with another s/h 30 year old fatigued part.
    • Top off with distilled water and see what happens. If you keep losing coolant then you know to start looking.

    • So, I've had my V36 for about a month now and have already copped an "excessive exhaust noise" notification from QLD TMR, reported by someone in my local area. It's a twin as per the original, and can have a bit of a throaty note to it when idling cold 😄 and if I do get up it a bit, it can be noisy, but it did pass a roadworthy inspection before sale, so.... ... but in the interest of being a good neighbour, I do want to quieten it down a bit. Is anyone here running a quiet aftermarket cat-back on their V36 or 370Z? And the big, bold question: does an aftermarket cat-back really make much of a performance difference on these cars?
    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
