I know i know..........another thread about the pod vs Panel filter thread, but all the threads i read on this, the cars are only pushing 150 - 200 rwkw.

Say at 250rwkw would there be a restriction with airflow as opposed to a pod filter?

I have a POD atm but looking at putting the standard airbox in with the k&n to avoid an epa as i have a fmic also.

Anyone had a dyno run to see the differences at this power level?

I've got the stock airbox/snorkel on my car. When the lid of the box was taken off it made an extra 5kw on the dyno. I've been trying to think of a way to make the snorkel / lid opening bigger because i want that extra 5kw ;) and i dont wana have to use a pod :)

I would have thought that the restriction would be in the intake pipe from the box to the turbo and the intake pipe from the outside to the box.

fix those 2 up and I'd say the stock air box and k&n panel would be just as good if not better than pod.

I used a hole saw to cut out the circular section. Fed that with an old piece of intercooler piping, that goes to the front bar area. Invisible to the eye, but gives an extra feed to the box if the engine needs to suck in more (cold) air.

i remember reading a thread about someone that actually put a pod filter in a standard airbox on an r33 (with pics)...and also had a cold air feed from the front of the airbox as preadator mentioned (had a look for the thread but no luck)

You didn't read the threads very carefully because I know I have posted that I have 255rwkw with stock air box and panel filter. All indications are that it poses no restriction. Mik has something near 400rwkw in his GTR with stock air box.

I might pull the top off the box at the dyno day to test the restriction of the snorkle.

I was just about to add that both Mik and Sewid are pushing over 340awkw and both using the factory airbox in an R33 and R34 GTR respectively.

i am surprised noone havs brought it up yet ... Mine's R34 ... stock aribox and wat 600hp or something like that? and the response in theat car apparently is awesome, so i dont believe the stock airbox would restrict it that much if you are worried about using the stock airbox maybe you could try an ARC ( if they make one for your make ) airbox they are apparently very good.

YEP I'VE GOT 255RWKW ATM AND DID TAKE THE TOP OFF THE AIRBOX AND AIR FILTER OUT FOR A DYNO RUN AND ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE. FACTORY SNORKEL AND AIRBOX, K&N AIR FILTER. R33GTST.

PODS ARE FOR DEFECTS AND WHOOSHY SOUNDS - WE ALL LOVE WHOOSHY SOUNDS...

Well I was going to start a thread as I was a bit suspect that a POD was worth shite apart from another $100 or so out my pocket & a lot of noise.

I've been thinking of going a Blitz dry type panel filter as the K&N oil filters will require you to clean your AFM on a regular basis (unless you go to an aftermarket ECU & replace it with a MAP sensor). Don't really want the extra hassle or risk of it running lean.

Well I've just ordered an Apexi air filter from Nengun along with a couple other bits to cheapen the freight. Should be interesting to see what kind of difference it makes. I won't be dyno'ing it for a while though

But I have 247rwkw r33gtst. I have modified the snorkel so that it clears the FMIC that comes over the top. So I cut the snorkel and used some plastic to seal it up. Boost dropped to 0psi above 6000rpm.

I have now hacked the snorkel more (as no longer needs to clear stock intercooler pipe and used 1.5mm sheets of plastic to seal it. Holds a little better now but still poses a restriction above about 6300rpm.

With the snorkel removed runs to 7000rpm no troubles :ninja:

I still want to have some kind of air ducting to prevent hot air feeding the intake. Because of the stock airbox it's hard to bring the air feed from the existing hole where one of the stock intercooler pipe went through.

Anyone got any innovations here?

I have a pod in the garage but I would rather keep it looking as stock as possible while keeping inlet charge cool.

I have 260 rwkw's on a dynolog and snorkel on/off only 1 odd kw difference ....... WITH BONNET UP....... also boost held up well , only dropping 1psi 18-17

However on street with bonnet down i was flat out getting to 16 and dropped to 12........ But bonnet rubbers were worn and bonnet was about 5mm below guard level..... so i bolstered it up to 5mm above temporarily (only over a year now haha) and it was alot better...... yet to try difference on dyno with it down..

About to retune with new turbo and auto so i'll try it out then, as i too am going to do an extra breathing mod that looks good/factory/stealth etc .....

    • Hello everyone. I've recently started the research into R34 GTR front bits and running into eye watering prices. On the plus site it looks like some places make 'replacement' fender liners for these cars. At eye-watering-but-less than stock prices. I also noticed there's plenty of diffuser options available too. What I would like to know is if my following assumptions are correct. 1) The OEM guard liners are actually only 'half' the liner. They go together with the OEM brake vents which are a separate item which looks to be quite a large 'panel' that is part of the liner. The GTR bumper has bolt holes along the front. I assume the ones in the vent correspond to the ones the OEM liner does not have (circled?)   2) The V-Spec front diffuser supplants the brake ducts in the above item. I am assuming these still work with the guard liners as there's no alternate part that I'm aware of. I don't see how they go together, so I'm making the assumption that they have to, somehow. I know the center splash guard is different on the V-Spec (and is the price of the damn diffuser alone). How does the liner interact with this? 3) There's alternate front diffusers that do away with it all. Annoyingly, a lot of the clones and CF different ones... have no brake ducts on them. I like the idea of them though. My brakes get hot on the track. These alternate diffusers are a lot cheaper than plastic splash guards. I'm assuming you don't have to/aren't supposed to remove guard liners to run a diffuser. I suspect that quite a few people actually do not run the guard liner because with a front undertray you're getting a lot of 'splash' guarding anyway, and most people remove liners given they're probably running a pretty aggressive setup with a diffuser at the front. It would also be nice to know if anyone has ever run the 'reproduction' guard liners and know whether the fitment is OEM quality or "OEM Quality".     • Really, effort is pretty low. You hand fistfuls of cash over to someone else and pick it up when done...   And at least this shitbox isn't drinking coolant right?  
    • And most chargers that most DIY people own would put bugger all power back into the battery between cylinders. I've always done it with jumper packs/second battery connected. And that's on any car.   Because race car, and wanting the lightness.  At least in an R33, putting a bigger battery in can at least help shift the weight balance backwards
