Hey guys, just recently I've developed this high pitched whining sound that seems to be coming from either the front or rear wheel on the drivers side. Anyone got any ideas as to what this could be or any way I could diagnose it?

Could be wheel bearing, take each wheel off and spin the hub, you should be able to tell if its stuffed if it doesnt spin free. Out of gear and handbrake off for the rear of course.

Hey dude, sorry to hear about the probs with ur car. i am guessing either a faulty wheel bearing( it will be easy to tell if the wheel doesnt spin freely and feels sloppy when you try and shake it) or one of your brake pads has been overheated or is worn out and is touching the rotor occasionally, causing the noise. Does the noise happen after you have braked or when you are driving along??

It seems to happen when I'm driving along, at times it will be silent then out of nowhere it comes again. My brake pads have lots of meat left, so I doubt it's them, though I can't be 100% certain. Guess I should just jack the sucker up and try eh? I'm guessing most likely it's the wheel bearing but without lifting up the car I can't know for certain

R33 Stealth, DEFINATELY not a belt sound...

MaTBoY, funny you should say that, I was gonna put in my original post that I've already ruled out the missus as a possible source

Abo Bob, I bled the brakes maybe 5-6 weeks ago

It would be the wheel bearing Thats how mine is, It comes and goes turn a corner it could go away, But when me and mates looked at the wheels they dont spin freely.

Does anybody know how to access them and change them, I dont really want to pay some fool $400 to do it and find I could have done it in 4 hours.

I need a Diag or something of the wheel assembley

7yphon, I came across this and was going to follow it after confirmation of my problem, beleive it come be some use to you...

I have the same sounds and I'm not sure what it is really...myabe it is the wheel bearing. But form my experience when the bearing is gone it makes a more low pitched grinding noise...I will take off the wheel and have a go...

on the money,

depending on how bent they are you would probably want to check.

you might have crap loads of meat on the pads or you might not, either way to get rid of hte noise you are going to have to get at the pads anyways to check.

its a piece of piss to pull the bloody pads out and bend the indicators to where they should be if you have heaps of meat left (keeping in mind evenish wear etc).

I can tell you I've had this problem a couple of times with my rather dust inducing ultimates. half way through life theres always a pad that nneeds the guide to be bent.. just got bent in somewhere along the way and i forgot to check and bend to the appropriate spot.. no biggy. take the half hr to check all 4.. re-bleed brakes for some good pedal feel and top up the resevoir... walla...

so simple i could train a monkey to do it >

    • Yeah, playing with naturally aspirated is not smart bang for your buck power wise, but then I've never been known for being smart when it comes to cars and modifications
    • I mean from V8 world there are gains to be made in intakes and such over stock items, but definitely only if you tune them. We're talking about I dunno, 10kw here and there on a 300KW v8, gains made by tuning in the 0.2 AFR that it changes so YES but also no you won't notice it other than the sound. Duct the air as mentioned 750,000 times and you will notice happier IAT's which definitely make a difference N/A. I mean my unsubstantiated guess is you'd go from 140kw with everything stock (after cams) to 145kw with everything and a tune :p
    • I decided to "spend baby spend", and "risk it for the biscuit" 2 Orders were made buying parts that I "don't really need but really really want" totalling $2.5k AUD 1: In stock items (intake plenum and throttle body) 2: The airbox thingie, with no real ETA for them getting more stock, so patience will be required
    • Any further updates on experiences with them? Anyone installed one with a getrag here as yet?
