Hey there guyz!

Tomorrow (19/04/06) is the day that i finally purchase my dream car. a Nissan Skyline R33 GTS-T! i have been saving and waiting for this car since i was 13.

Now to the point of the story, when i head out into town or simply just driving places i see highly modified Skylines and WRX's etc driven by P platers. i called up Just Car Insurance just before and they quoted my $1900 for comprehensive insurance. i dont know about you but i think that is rediculous. i mean i see where they are coming from because i am nearly 18 driving a turbo but $1900!!! Geesus!

All i want to know is how these young people on P plates driving around in modified cars get insurance? i mean do they put it in their mums and dads name? or are they just simply rich and fork out the $2000? i would really love to find out because i am a first year apprentice and simply cannot afford the $1900 insurance they are offering. any information and tricks of the trade to get cheaper insurance would be much highly appreciated.

cheers guyz.

OK you really should have looked into insurance before you got serious about getting the car hey?

$1900 is a very reasonable price, hey by a reletively new SS commodore and you'd be paying about that too.

I went with just car insurance, my first year was $1700 for my r32 when i was 21, with 3 years perfect driving and insurance record.

Putting the car under your parents name DOES NOT WORK for imports. Most mainstream insurance companies wont touch them, and all the companies that do HAVE WORKED OUT THAT SCAM years ago.

Even if its in your parents name, they will ask you if anyone else will be driving it, and if you say you are (even for a small % of the time) they will charge you the same rate as if you had the car in your name. If you dont tell them that you are driving the car, you wont be covered so your wasting your money.

Its called a named driver policy (thats what just cars calls it) Only people on the policy are covered at all.

And do a search, there is heaps of info about insurance on the forum. Try Just cars or Prestige.

Also, if you are on your P plates in Vic or NSW, you are illegally driving a r33 gtst, so be prepared to have a lot of trouble with the police and the chance that EVEN if you have insurance and have an accident, that you wont be covered.

Cheers, Good luck

yep, premiums are based on the youngest listed driver, not the percentage in which they drive.

due to your age, they would have given you an introductory rating 5 as you have had very minimal, if any, insurance history.

in 4 years time when your on a rating 1, you will probably find yourself paying under $1000!

hey Rhett yes your correct, i should have looked into it a lot more than what i have. i did try and putting it in my parents name and i said its my mums car and i wont be driving but he didnt believe me. anyway i got a quote for $904. but if i have an accident the claim would be void he was saying. so your correct again, i would be wasting my money. also i live in adelaide. our parliment is slack in trying to save young lives because we dont have any restricions in place yet about turbo's etc. thanks a lot, i will give Prestige a quick buzz..

unfortunatly Prestige dont insure Nissan Skyline's. she just handballed me off to Just cars lol. oh well. i did try young and cool insurance but i made the mistake of telling them i would be driving and they said they wont be able to insure me because im under 18 or something. i wll give them a call now and tell them its in my parents name :)

ur under 18, and only payng 1900 for a turbo 33, lucky you. a mate of mine who is 18, non turbo 33 is paying 2.5k, with just cars of course, but no other place will insure him (forgot to call young and cool, might have to check it out). but by comparison, this is insane as another mate with a turbo 34, 18yo is paying 2.5k aswell. if you havent bought the car yet, maybe consider something else a bit easier to insure? i know it would be a hard thing to do, as im 17, and if i had the dosh, a 33 would be high on the list, but always investigate every option. u might be better off with something local, im not saying buy a cheap slow car, but just find out how much insurance is on some other things. a 32 should be a fair bit cheaper as it was sold locally (will that make all 32s cheaper, or would this only be for the ones actually sold thru australian dealers?). is adelaide a no-turbo for P platers state, or does it have somethin like Vic, with power to weight limits?

Edited by VB-

howdy VB nah adelaide has no limits on the power to weight. pretty much you can have what ever car you want as long as you can pay for the insurance etc. adelaide's parliment i think is trying to introduce something like vic n nsw. so you reckon $1900 is a fair deal?

what about being an 'Unlisted driver'?? i got a quote for an r33 gts-t from just cars and the quote wasn't in my name and they had the costs that would charged if an unlisted driver had an accident about $2000 excess.

i also have a mate who's insured his supra non-turbo through just cars and hsa put it under his dad's name and is using the option of being an unlisted driver.

That's not unreasonable for a performance car, considering.....

My N15 SSS cost me that much to insure from NRMA as a Under 25 drive a few years ago.

Mate $1900 is an excellent deal for someone your age. I'm 23 and been driving since i was 17 and only this year have i been able to get full comprehensive from just cars for under $2k. Got a quote from them for $1700 last month and took it.

I'm in Sydney though, which might have something to do with the price compared to yours.

    • sold listed as a Tomei LSD 1.5 Way For 1998+ Nissan Skyline ER34 25GT RB25DE w/Open R200 https://www.ebay.com/itm/174006114594?campid=5338967980&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&toolid=10050&customid=&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&loc_physical_ms=108689&loc_interest_ms=&campid=5338967980&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&toolid=10050&customid=71883f2ccc571356e0a757bc7adfdde2&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&loc_physical_ms=108689&loc_interest_ms= it went in like butter all gears, alignment, back lash etc, rotation and clearances correct, and if rolling all rotates smooth and free when coasting down road , clutch in or out over 10 mph smooth... its the binding, clunking and jerking from a stop that is most concerning, also seems like its going to tear the tires off in 10 miles of normal road driving.
    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
