hi guys, i bought an r32 gtr on sunday an on monday i took it 4 a drive...i started 2 hear a knockin noise comin from the engine wen i was changin gears, by lunch time it was knockin 4 a little bit while idling an by night time it was constantly knockin (fairly loud) while drivin an idling!!! i hopin its jus the lifters or somethin small but not feelin 2 confident bout it...

would any1 have any suggestions??? who should i take it 2???

an what bout an engine rebiuld? who would u guys recommend 2 rebuild engines? i dont have the money 4 a rebuild but was jus wonderin who in canberra would be good for future purposes...

If you bought it from a dealer take it back there. If you bought it privately, have a look at the "where to get Skylines serviced" thread (stickied at the top of this forum). Personally, I recommend Ed at Integra Automotive in Queanbeyan to look at it. He knows his stuff.

Just don't go jumping to conclusions about engine rebuilds or whatever. Esp if you take it to a dodgy repairer (we all know who they are), cos if u even mention something like that, they might just say "uhh...YEAaaahhh. that's what it needs!" and from that point u can just turn around and bend over :P

Youve done a big end bearing. Time to pull her apart and give it a rebuild.

Take it to Integra Automotive for engine removal/refit (about $2200 from memory which is standard price anywhere) and then talk to Pro Engines about rebuild. Both are in Queanbeyan and deal with GTR's every day.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, dont drive the car. The more you do, the more damage you will do to it. Best case scenario is you get it towed and its a fairly cheap rebuild, worst case scenario if you keep driving is the bearing locks up, conrod bends and exists out the side of the block. Then you will be in for a whole world of hurt when you see the rebuild price.

Listen to this advice:Amaru probably has more knowledge on this subject than anyone else in the ACT,and probably on the Eastern seaboard,IMHO!

The knock sensor idea,whilst good,probably has no bearing(pun intended) here:if you can hear the knock,it's past the point of saving. Any mechanic who knows their left from their right will tell you an audible engine knock,be it "pinging" from detonation,to big end rattle,will be damage done already if it can be heard clearly by the human ear. Knock sensors(factory ones and well calibrated aftermarket ones)will pick a knock long before the human ear(trained or untrained).

One thing that makes me laugh,and this is in no way aimed at Stunnd,is the expectation that someone buys a 15-odd-year old Group A-based car that retailed for $110,000 (back then) for somewhere between $17K and $35K and expect the highly strung,aging,questionably-serviced weapon to hold it all together under the new owners expectations of a hugely powerful and thrashable vehicle. When these thing break something,no matter how small,it's usually expensive. Even standard servicing and running cost are higher. There's no real way to "be cheap" around a Godzilla,or anything similarly spec'd. If petrol hits the predicted $2/litre mark,or worse,my bet is most performance car owners are going to have a dummyspit. Me? I'll still boost mine hard at the track, and it'll get driven as often as it usually does. It's part of supercar ownership.

That said,I'm awaiting the barrage of naysayers wondering accusingly where my casr has been lately. True,it will have it's (working flawlessly) engine removed and rebuilt. Why? Because my idea of MY perfect GT-R involves more power than attainable from the factory ,and I wont do the job half arsed. Will it cost much? I'm expecting it to hurt the hip pocket hugely. Will it be worth it? The satisfied grin as I roll it out after it's running in period will reveal all. Will it take a long time? Hell yes. I'm no drug dealer or rich business giant that can turn a huge task like the rebuild I want into a four week wonder job.

I didnt get it either... and my R32 never spun a bearing :laugh:

Uusually happens from deotnation, poor oil supply/quality, or its just been thrashed to hell and back.

ouch... another 32 bites the dust.

If I go with a 32 GTR as my next project (not my first choice) I will buy a really schmick example with a blown motor. And also buy an RB26DETT. Then... wait for it... combine the two!

Real sorry to hear bout your motor dude. As said if its been purchased from a dealer and you only had it a day then maybe see them about some sort of warranty based rebuild.

If its been bought privately I would go with a stab straight to the heart shortly followed by the destruction of your bank cheque before he cashes it.

Hooray for buyer beware. Theres not much recourse you can take on a private sale unfortunately. There are tests that can be done before buying the car to check for bottom end damage (oil sample analysis) but most people dont bother with it (and I dont blame them, its a bit overkill).

buyer beware, yes but there is a cooling off period for cars over a certin price, i have looked into this when i got done over buying a lemon. YOu have about a couple of days after buying

Interesting...Even if it's private? I thought if it went "bang" in the driveway as you pulled out after handing the money over,it was already too late...

I always seems to have receipts saying "IN as is condition", or "with all faults"?

I thought once the money was handed over, that was the end of it.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed 
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
