could anyone tell me what coil packs do and if they would give ma a bit of power and yeh what the nxt steps i shoudl be takin were...oh and by the way im not prepared ot buy a bigger turbo or a another ecu atm so yeh jus pov mods at the moment lol :D

thanks

hi mate congrats on the purchase, all i can think of is a front mount and a boost control i'm in the same boat not prepared on getting a bigger turbo just yet, my line is pretty much same as your as mods go apart from fuel pump, not so sure bout the coil packs i'd ho;d back on them until you upgrade your turbo, i'm planning on getting a adjustable fuel pressure regulater and a bosch 044 fuel pump soon and i think that will do me for awhile until i saved enough for bigger turbo,

you sure your gonna require a 044?

thats pretty big, and damn noisy, oh and external aswell.

have a run through here

see what they have and how much power they got.

congrats on teh purchase!

- firstly give it a service: oil, oil filter, coolant, spark plugs, fuel filter, oxygen sensor

- then, put it on the dyno for an hour and get the tuner to see how healthy the engine is. they can also play around with your timing to get the most out of what you have got. plus you will get a power figure to see what the car is making

What are coil packs you ask?

they are coils within a little plastic pack that sit over the spark plugs. there's one over each spark plug. they generate a signal when instructed to do so, and pass this to the spark plug which creates a spark to ignite the fuel.

Will putting bigger coils generate more power?

Well it will generate a bigger spark, but this probably won't equate into much more power unfortunately

if you want to play around with the car a little more, i would suggest thinging of some of the following:

- front-mount intercooler ($300) and piping ($400)

- boost controller ($50) set to about 12psi (any more then 14psi can cause the turbo to fail)

That will give you a nice jump in power. they generally say 1psi raises power by 10kw when in the right setting (ie already have exhaust and intercooler)

good luck!

Warren.

will only give a power increase if the current coils are not working.

Next step is a fmic, and unfortuately thats the end of the pov mods. Turbo, injectors and ecu are next.

You will need a turbo to make 180 as the stocker doesn't like to play much past 160 odd. An rb25 turbo will do it though and they are cheap enough.

fmic and 14psi boost should see close to 165-170rwkw if you are willing to test that sort of boost on stock turbo..

a few people have..

i think both roy and cubes ran this sort of boost on stock turbo and it didn't break..

no guarantees though..

180rwkw is not going to happen with stock turbo.

fmic kit from JUST JAP will set you back $500 or so.. see traders for sale section.

Dr Drift can also do retuned Stock ECU for about $400 or so I think.

now.. you say you don't want to change turbo but considering an Rb25 turbo will cost you like $350 these days, it's cheaper than both the above bits, but they are ALL needed for the 180rwkw you are after.

thanks heaps...i do have a boost controller (sorry forgot to mention) i boosted to abotu 15psi and started to shyt myself abit so i turned it down to about 10 lol so i decided to do what u guys said and look at a 33 turbo and yeh its onlly about 300 bux anyone know about how mani kws u can get out of it and how much boost it can handle ?

And as for the front mount ive been looking and alot of them, theres heaps of copy ones out there and they all claim to do the same as the hybrid ones but like yeh not too sure about that ;) Im thinkin i should just hold out for a lil while, not settle of crap, go for quality and buy the Hybrid 600mm yeh ?

cheers

oh and i knwo this isnt the place to post it but im afta a new steerin wheel so if ne1 got one and lives in melb let me know...cheers ( again sorry about postin this in here)

hybrid copies are fine.

they are all the same except that HYBRID have plastered their name on the core.. it's the same core as the non marked ones, and comes from the same factory.

it'll do the job and do it well.

r33 turbo will make around 170-190 rwkw on about 13-14psi on an RB20 depending on dyno.

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.

    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
