Hey all,

getting some spots of rust in the rear guards of the skyline, kinda might comr through the paint soon so becoming serious.

Anyways i have a few options

1.Buy new guards, get them put on and sprayed

2. sand em back, bog em up, get em sprayed

3, let em rust through

4. any other options?

Now i have no idea when it comes to rust, what would be more cost effective as im not holding onto the car much longer, i barely know whats involved in removing it!

All help appreciated

Thanks all

Ed

Ed if you're after opinions... :D

As you've said you're not holding onto the car much longer - I can almost guarantee any money spent on repairing will not be recovered in the sale. I'd leave it there and the buyer can factor in what they'd like to do.

You could remind them that GT-R rear quarters are around $550 each from Mr Nissan... they're actually cheaper than Toyota Echo guards :D

well if you know someone who can do it cheap it probably is worth getting fixed - whether its sand it back, cure it, bog it, paint it or putting on a new guard... body repairs can be very expensive (stupid insurance companies) and unless you are 'in the know' or know someone 'in the know' a buyer is going to factor in about 1k at least to get it fixed.....if you get a good job done for say 600$ thats better than dropping your price 1k....

(i know all about rust cause i own the worlds 2nd rustiest alfa romeo model after the sud .lol)

get it fixed mate, no one in their right mind will buy your car with rust coming through the rear quarters.

You'd think that'd be the case, but there are plenty of people who are happy to purchase a car that needs love. Best piece of advice I ever heard from a person who sells cars for a living, "don't spend money on a car you're about to sell". I'm sure there are brokers/exporters that sell plenty of rusted cars, sometimes to customers that know they are corroding! :))(*cough* PM *cough*)

The second best piece of advice he offered was to swap number plates from rear to front. :D Used to work when slimlines were both the same size...

Rich I guess we'll just agree to disagree :D If I was aware a panel had been cut/bogged/painted due to rust, I'd be pissed because that generally won't fix the problem.

Here's where I'm coming from: (driver's outer sill)

dont get me wrong. i've imported a rusty car before. cost me a few $K to fix the rust but i wouldnt want to have tried selling it rusty.

think of it like this you are trying to sell a 32 in a flooded market. you want some positives to seperate your car from the rest. you dont want rust to be the thing that people remember after having looked at your car. you will be lucky to get any offers for it at all.

Yeah that is a very good point mate. I hadn't considered supply/demand too closely.

Maybe GT-R rear guards could be the go to provide a nice positive for a GTSt...?

i bought the car with some rust in the back was only some small spots, thats nearly 2 years ago, but now its getting worse and i mayaswell fix it up, the car will be at my mates workshop for a while and a panel beater works next door so maybe i can sand it back, bog it up and get him to spray it mates rates, id love the gtr rear guards they would look awesome i think but too much cash!

the next month or two im just going to be fixing her up waiting to sell her, i want an easy sale and i mayaswell spend a grand to get 1500-2000 more for the car.....

thanks for the pointers guys..

Ed

    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
