Thats not exactly true Paul. In the wet I actually think they are better than standard street tyres - as long as there is a fair bit if tread left. And thats the hard part because with normal street driving you'll probably only get 5,000km's before they are shot.

But for exmple I remember last year at Calder (track - not drag) a WRX being 3s faster in the rain on RE55's than on his "good" street tyres. Same deal as when R comps are cold - they aren't as grippy as when they are hot but they are still more grippy than normal tyres.

As said - the biggest problem with R comps and street driving is value for money given the short life span.

Agree 100% on the above....last year at EC during the motorsport trip it absolutely pissed down with rivers across the track and standing water everywhere. I was simply staggered at the amount of grip the RE's gave me even when cold. Gadg was using RE's then tried his street tyres and had nowhere near the grip that he had with the semi's.

Biggest issue with them on the road is definitely the noise and the wear.

Just to add a little bit of comparison to this subject.

At EC last year in the wet my car (worn RE55's) was quicker than Gareth's (worn fat streets) when it was slightly damp or drizzling. But once it started to bucket down I simply couldn't keep up no matter how hard I tried. And believe me I tried (Got in trouble for drifting too) Was only a couple of seconds in it. But I think the degree of water makes a difference.

Steve give 'Gordon Leven Tyres' a call (they are at Emu Plains 5mins from Penrith) I was out there yesterday looking, from memory 245/40/17's were $390ish and 265/35/18's were $490ish (go up to 315/18's for 11inch rim) and the slicks were 250/17 at $490ish.

They also get used R's from all the NSW events from $80ish which will give you a couple of events worth of usage.

245/18 $465

Just by calling a few places around I got a couple quotes for 245/40/18 in the $410 to $415 range. So $465 souds a fair bit more than one needs to pay.

ps. Competition Tyres in Oakleigh quoted $410.

Where was the $465 quote from?

Prices for Re55's have increased significantly recently so the places that are quoting 'old' prices most likely have stock they bought at the old prices and probably want to move them.

Nothing wrong with that though :)

Wish I had a rubber factory............I can buy a car with wheels at those prices. :P

I agree don't run them on the road................dangerous when cold and wet.

Buy a set with rims for the track...................that is all

    • Have a vb in honour of the car comming back
    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
