Gday All,

As of last night my oil pressure guage will read normal and then randomly and independent of rpm, will drop to almost 0. When the engine rpm is increased the pressure will rise but not as much as normal. It is reduced by about half of the normal readings at any given rpm.

I am wondering whether it is a voltage issue or guage issue or worst of all, an actual oil pressure problem.

Any insight into this problem is appreciated. Car is a 1989 GT-R.

Cheers,

Ben.

colar is most likely stuffed on the pump, again take it to a mechanic and get an independant reading done by removing the sender, but I would be betting on it being the colar.

yes it could still be the sender of cluster itself but I myself wouldnt be taking that risk.

I did once and I ended up rebuiling the motor.

Damn I just replaced the crank and rods and the Oil press sender (from another RB) and its doing the same thing and reading all over the place.

I thought it was just the gauge before but the clattering noise was a bit of a giveaway as well so expected problems.

Found out it was the countersunk screws in the back of the oil pump had come right out!

So dont think its the sender unless proven, but hopefully this time it is!

I think I will avoid running the engine completely to be safe. can't afford a rebuilt right now.

Thanks heaps for the replies. You guys are lifesavers.

Yea I know the feeling. Dont know whats wrong with it and kinda hope its not anything bad. Seeing it read 0 is scarey. Esp when you dont or not plan for rebuilds.

when my gauge reads zero... my mental argument is that the red warning light doesn't come on, so not to worry. When that light starts coming on, then i'll worry!!

My guage has been playing up for roughly a year, and i've been drifting the car, almost weekly. So, if something was wrong with the oil pump, i figure my engine would have blown itself up a long time ago

red light and gauge are independant, when the red light comes on you have no oil pressure. i have similier issues, mine always reads low, but i have seen it drop to zero when i came to a stop once, also it moves under heavy breaking.

Well, good news. It is the sender unit. The car had 90PSI at cold idle.

Now to find a cost effective replacement, I hear the nissan genuine units are $220 odd.

A big thanks to Dan (3lit3 32) for taking the time to drive 45 minutes to help me out.

For some reason and for the first time in about 3 weeks, the guage seems to be working. It was reading almost zero after driving for a while but yesterday it was at 6 when starting then made it's way down to 2 and stayed there until i revved it and then it went up and then back down to normal.

Hopefully it stays working but i won't count on it.

I replaced my sender unit with a new one, had similar problems, and also connected a mechanical gauge and compared the results to the original dash mounted GTR gauge.

Interesting results.......

While the mechanical gauge can be reading a steady figure say 45psi the Nissan gauge can vary between 2 to 3 KG/cm3 depending on its mood. Also at idle the mech gauge reads 30PSI rock steady the nissan gauge still reads high at around 40psi equivilent. At 4000rpm the mech gauge is up around 80PSI the nissan gauge still reads about 4 kg/cm3. So even with a decent sender the Nissan gauge is really a indicator that you have oil pressure, how much exactly can only be sorted with a good mechanical gauge fitted.

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
    • When you pulled it off, there is no signs of blown head gasket? Is it possible you have some other issues going on? Possible cracked blocked? Or do you think it's straight up lifting the head? Did you check what the head was torqued to before pulling it down (To see if possibly they're stretching, or starting to break threads out etc)?
    • Seems like a decent result for a modded JZX110. They are bulky in comparison to the 100 and 90 models (which I'd prefer myself) but they are getting very few and far between here in JP these days. Thanks for the detailed review and the import process into the UK. I also have a car which I'm hoping to export from Japan at some stage so it's good to know if someone from the UK was interested in it. By the way the corrosion underneath is par for the course for cars which were located in/near the mountains or along the Japan sea coastline. They get huge amounts of snow every winter and the sodium chloride is used on the roads. Many cars have some kind of rubber like treatment underneath but they tend to limit it to the wheel arches underbody and fuel tank. Suspension arms and sub-frames will have similar corrosion to your JZX110 which is a common sight. See it all the time and car dealers here generally don't even mention it unless asked.
    • If the sound goes away when you clutch in, the 1.5/2 way diffs are just shit, and you are a normal person. The diff is likely "fine" but driving at anything under 30kmh is a violent horrible experience. It would be exaggerated with solid diff bushings and subframe bushings if you have those.
