hi guys,

im driving an 89 r32 gtst which is fairly stock with the following mods:

greddy cat back exhaust

k&n air filter

ms air flow meter

stock boost ( tried running the car at 12psi, but didnt feel much difference except for the lag?)

the problem with car is when i floor it, it doesnt really seem to go :(

the accelerator pedal doesnt seem to be very responsive at all

like it will go and you can slightly feel the boost

but you wont feel the rush as much as say a 180 or a wrx :)

the car also lacks low end response

i know its a 17 yr old car and heard its very common amongst r32s

but would you guys recommend any mods to fix this?

or could it be a problem with the car itself?

any help would be much appreciated

thanks ;)

My r32 was quite laggy when it was stock.

It didn't really improve with a fmic and 3" catback but I got improvement once on full boost.

My car is a manual but my son bought a stock auto r32 and it was much less laggy.

I thought it must be the gearing or torque convertor but when we converted it to manual it was still less laggy.

I think it is because the auto ecu is programmed to run 20 degrees initial advance where the manual is programmed for 15 degrees.

You can't just advance the manual to 20 degrees because you will be running 5 degrees too much advance when you come on boost.

I suppose we should have swapped ecus to find out but I'm building a 2.6L rb25 and running a pfc now.

i had a problem with my 33 when i put a dual stage boost controller on it. when i changed gears the air between the wastegate and the contoller wasn't realeasing so when i grabbed the next gear the wastegate was still wide open and it wouldn't boost. put my old turbotech controller on and it goes fine. i also have a mate with a turbosmart boost tee that does the same thing.

so a cause of it may be a sticky wastegate, or for the people with boost controllers, it might be the controller.

I believe the problem is lack of stroke/bore.

Try a rb30det :D

I guarentee it will put a smile on your dial! Im smiling :D

Ok sorry...on a more serious note, rb20dets dont understand the word torque, but they understand revs. They are a very peaky motor, you need to rev the shit outta them to make power or punch. With the sort of mods you have everything seems abit restricted...free up the exhaust, you will find it opens up abit better down low and midrange and try an intercooler that might actually drop the intake charge air temp. If everything else fails...revert to my original suggestion.

It's all relative.

5 degrees more advance will help but an rb20 is always going to be sluggish off boost

The main reason an rb20 is laggier than an sr20 is because it has such a short stroke.

Is your M's afm 100% compatible the the stock ecu?

Maybe a remap would help.

Just a suggestion, get in the passenger seat of it and go for a run. I got so used to mine that i posted in here a while ago trying to figure out what it was. Dyno'd it @ 135kw, which sounded okay, so got my mate to take me for a spin. Scared the crap outta me, feels a helluva lot faster when your not the driver :(

lol first of all thx guys for ur replies :(

from your replies im looking at:

chucking the car on dyno.

adjustable cam gears - exhaust and inlet

dump/front pipe

turbotech controller

ecu remap

and ask a friend to drive it for me

lack of stroke/bore? is there anyway to improve this without changing the engine?

so should i do all of the above??

man looks like im gota save up for a while...juz paid off my insurance :(

again thx for the help guys

lol s2k12 i woulda got a gtr but im only on my Ps bro :)

p.s guys how much kms u guys getting from ur car??

ive noticed my cars got very bad economy

    • @robbo_rb180 I already have a NEO head on the shitbox 😎 Just needs beehive springs so I can rev it past the 8600 rpm limiter, then again pointless too, turbo is out of puff lol. Wen da gods let me win lotto eh?
    • Everyone I know with a90 supra at time attack aren't having issues with 3-5 fast laps so far and one is decent powered one too. Saw a k24 swapped 86 with a 8hp70 and big slicks and aero which had no drama's at QR and Manton Park. I've stuck a 25 row cooler in my setup with 8hp45/50 in the hopes of keeping the oil cool as I plan on some racing next year that 20-30min sessions. I've also geared my car so won't be using 7th and 8th gear too. @Dose Pipe Sutututu just needs to get that samsonas in already and have that tassie guy fit a head and rev it too 11ty thousand rpm.
    • My embedded systems thoughts have me sitting with GTS on this. Variation between same phone hardware, should be small. However, the internal "intensity" or "volume" amount that say Google passes to the app, will be quite different, as the underlying hardware will be passing different levels for the same volume to the Google OS. Until the app creator has had each individual phone, and set benchmarks and calibrations for each, the amount of error can be quite huge.   It can even be observed by using different phones, recording the same noise, and then playing it back, they end up soon ding different. A big reason for it, is even the different types of mics used in phones have different responses, and different frequency ranges. Then you need to get into the DSP, and the variations in those, their sample rates which then effect their frequency range, and then the quality of the DSP, and what type of hardware conversion they do to for the ADC within the DSP. Oh, and let's not forget at the low level phones are designed to cutout loud sounds. It's one of the reasons they suck in really loud environments (eg concerts). The louder you yell, the more you'll get cutout too Note DSP is Digital Signal Processor ADC is the analogue to data converter. I don't have any real data on what the variation would truly be, however, chat GPT says in general, their output is typically between +/-2dB to +/-5dB of what you're really measuring. So realistically, anything from 4 to 10dB variation is possible even with the same devices.
    • 'sif the error will be that low!
    • I do know where there is a fair few 😉
