Cam Gears, Adjusting me and a mate where talking about my skyline and getting 200rwkw I said I need a computer and a Adjustable cam gear he said try and skip the belt over one tooth that should be about -4degrees and see how it goes, what do you guys think about this could it work. :cheers:post-28604-1154350017.jpg

so are cam gears really worth it

I'd say its different for every car

Cam gears do give you a lot more options with tuning and your powerband, such as:

Advancing Intake and Exhaust: This will provide the car with more bottom end power, and will decrease top end. Advancing both cam gears will move overlap earlier but will not increase it.

Retarding Intake and Exhaust: This will increase the cars top end, but will decrease low end. Retarding both cam gears will move the overlap later and but will not change the amount of overlap.

Advance Exhaust Only: This will help the cars top end, and it reduces overlap.

Retard Exhaust only: This will help the cars mid range power, very useful for cars with big turbos / big cams. By increasing overlap, It decreases lag significantly. Doing this will bring the boost on all at once.

Advance Intake only: This will increase overlap and helps the cars bottom end and mid range power. This mod will bring the turbo on all at once.

hang on are you saying you want to buy cam gears and adjust them one notch... or are you saying that the alternative to buying cam gears is to skip one tooth on the stock gears??

each tooth is 15deg, so skipping one tooth, as you say, will make it way way out and is a stupid idea

Mate I have looked into this and it comes down to this some people gain power some do not. Im getting my 100K service done shortly and getting a exhaust cam gear installed while I am at it. Apprantly the idea is to retard the timing by about 4 degrees it is meant to give you increased midrange and top end power. I will get the car dyno tuned and post before and after results.

mods are

full 3" exhaust

intercooler (hybrid)

11psi boost

safc2

195 rwkw

cheers

some people say you can gain up to 10hp

If you can feel a 7kw difference... that will surprise me.

Im yet to see conclusive evidence the cam gear will be of benefit on an stocker RB25

RB26, lots to gain, but you dont have one of those.

on a side note you can use the stock cam gears with a dongle fitted to adjust them. mine has a dongle fitted to make the exhaust side adjustable (gained nothing). so you can retain vct and have them adjustable

everyone is missing the point here...

HE WANTS TO ADUST HIS TIMING BELT WITHOUT ADJUSTIBLE CAM GEARS

that's right, with stock gears

this is NOT possible. please DON'T do it. ditch the idea completely.

That is all.

Correct, some one picked up on it.. You need to adjust the actual cam shaft not the gear on the belt.. If you wish to invest in such item take it to a workshop that can do the work for you.

i suppose in ways your right but what your talking about is really inefficent. what u want to do is to increase the overlap keeping it symetrical. u want the intake to open earlier and the exhuast to close later by the same amount. so really u want to advance the intake and retard the exhaust. Defintly do not time the belt incorrectly by one tooth because theres a big difference between the valve being open enough to pass gasses & the valves hanging down low in the path of the piston. In respect to do they make a difference i say yes. it works on the kadenacy effect. it already exists but you just take further advantage of it which is exactly how extractors work and we all know they make a difference. it's also what vtec does & we all know how much power honda can get out of a na 4cyl engine.

    • Look for broken wire or bad connector at the motor. Might not be it, but is worth starting there, as it is easy.
    • Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my R32 GT-R. Sometimes, when the car goes over a bump or experiences some vibration, the 4WD warning light comes on the dashboard. When I check the code from the control unit in the trunk, it shows Code 19 – ETS Motor. However, everything seems to be working fine — if I turn off the engine and restart the car, the light goes away and everything functions normally. Has anyone experienced this before? Where should I start troubleshooting this issue? Thanks in advance!
    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
    • 310mm rotors will be avilable from Australia, Japan, and probably a few other places. Nothing for the front can be put on the back.
    • The filter only filters down to a specific size. Add to that, the filter is AFTER the pump. So it means everything starts breaking your pump even if its being filtered out.
