But if only the manifold was changed (as stated) wouldn't it then point squarely at the manifold?

Id suggest it is possible to make 250rwkw on a stock manifold but you are pushing shit up hill to do it, same way it's possible to make 300 rwkw running a quiet 3 inch exhaust but a 3.5 inch straight through will make life easier, especially on the engine.

I'd rather get the factory item power ported before i got a cheap chinese stainless manifold.

Sometimes a custom manifold is beneficial as you can move the turbo, there isn't much room to work with with the standard item and large turbos.

I'm going to disagree with the majority and say that for the price of a hks low mount or something with similar flow (i got mine for $550) its definately a worth while upgrade if your changing turbos, everyone is bagging that manifold and saying the stock manifold is fine, but both manifolds use the same log type design, sure they work, but that doesnt mean the theres not big flow gains to be made with a equal length manifold.

every bit of extra flow is worth it! :D

I'd like to see clear clarification of "changed manifold" as it would more than likely involve a new dump and potentially other stuff, that most people dont think makes a difference

The HKS low mount looks damn nice, you can visualise how it flows considerably better than the stock exh. mani.

I've checked out Bl4ck32's. He's had it sitting there for god knows how long.

My 2c worth only . Exhaust manifolds are a pain to muck around with because the turbo location and all its plumbing are altered , and making everything fit and work properly and not burn the thing to the ground takes more work than you think if you've not been there before . This is why mobs like HKS sell complete kits where everything fits nicely and works . Personally I like their cast low mount manifold but it probably really needs their exhaust housing (or turbo) and dump pipe to go together properly .

To each their own but I've seen a manual R33 GTST with a few bolt ons (std turbo and manifolds) that had more power than traction with good road rubber . I think this tells the story of what can be achieved with essentially factory bits .

just because cars make 300 rwkw on the standard manifold doesnt mean squat.

listen to yourself's ppl

its like saying a un ported head is beter than 1 that has been done to the max because so and so's can made 400 rwkw with it.

im sure it would help the car by puting the ported head on.

ive hurd of and seen vl turbo's make 10 more rwkw and have a much beter midrange just by changing the head. not that the std head was an issue 242 rwkw on std head and 253 rwkw on a ported head.

only 9 more kw but it all halps.

same as your exhaust manifold.

shit log design shit everything. On a car making 250 rwkw id expect to c a healthy midrange increase and a litle bit up top too

As i think ive said a few times.

Its cost for gain.

Of course its going to help, but skyline owners are generally on a limited budget, so bang for buck is extremely important in determining the viability.

sure in a perfect world it will make a difference. but this world isnt perfect, and people dont have endless amounts of money

I think what every one is getting at is.....

Is it really worth the 1-1.6k + modifications to gain another 9rwkw. :)

Push the stocker to the limit then when it hits the brick wall swap it.

That way if you never end up pushing it just that little bit harder you haven't wasted near 1.5-2k on 9rwkw.

Absolutely second that.

Plus, the stocker manifold on most cars are pretty good for spool up (unless they're a crappy log design to begin with). Equal length ones have longer and wider runners meaning less exhaust pulse energy by the time it hits the turbine.

When i spoke to kyle last about his opinion on equal length runners, he basically said that he has seen no difference between an equal and unequal which he made and back to back tested on the dyno, with no changes except switching the manifolds. We came to the conclusion that they are a wank.

The only bad thing about the stock manifolds is that they do ocasionally decide to snap in half from the stress of ages and having up to 15 kilo's hanging off them.

We have had this happen on a number of occasions but there is nothing wrong with the stock manifold RE: Being able to make power.

Just my 2c worth

But James from abrasive flow honing flow tested one of those manifolds and compared it to the standard manifold needless to say the bloke that owned it left it sitting on the bench at the shop as an example what not to use on your car standard manifold beat it hands down

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
