Hey guys, i dont know alot about skyline's i just got mine a few weeks ago.

I have been told that it is not possible to run an external wastagte because R33 skylines Gtst's have an internal wastegate?

I have taken some pictures with the heat sheild removed and it looks likes the wastegate is external to me and is running back into the exhaust, would i just pay for somone to remove the pipe going into the exhaust seal the hole and make a larger pipe coming out so i get the flutter noise?? or is there alot more to it then i have been told... :) can somone give me a rundown on how this works and what i need to do?

Thankyou

Thats an internal wastegate, this means that the "flap" that controlls the boost pressure is in the turbo exhaust housing, its just that your dump pipe has a separate pipe for these gasses, why would you wast to run an external gate, it is possible, although the whole job would be fairly expensive(probably $1200) and gain you no power, and maybe a defect too if you have it venting to the air.

the wastegate and dump have nothing to do with flutter or "cooler noises". you should do some reading on what wastegate is and how it works and why an external wastegate is pointless on the stock turbo. the flutter is known as compressor surge, do a search on it. its often listed as flutter and is nothing more than air being chopped on the compressor wheel, causing damage

I have an external wastegate, but I also have a bigger turbo, and a modified exhaust manifold to suit. So yes, it's possible.

But as everyone said, do some research (use the search function, and google). I don't really think you understand what a wastegate actually does.

Thankyou guys no i have no idea and i am not very good with computers either lol, i have seen a few cars using a system that makes a flutter noise that causes no damages but i dont know what it is called, maybe i am using the wrong name, but thankyou all the same for your helpful information.

Try putting a pod filter on it this should give you the desired result, if not then you will have to fit an adjustable recirculating blow off valve and set it up with some extra preload. Backspin is what YOU want to hear, and this is the way to achieve it.

unfortunatly despite what you have been told, the noise you are wanting to hear IS compressor surge and even in its minimalist form causes damage to your turbocharger. unnecessary stress on the internal components of your turbo charger especially on the skyline turbos in not what you want and really defeats the purpose of blow off valve which is designed to rid the system of compressor surge and so on

If you want the flutter noise get a pod filter and block off your bov. This will cause the air to go back out through the compressor getting chopped up and then back out the pod. This will give it the flutter noise, no one has really proved itll damage your turbo, but no one has proved otherwise.

Some older turbo cars eg HR31 skylines etc didnt come with a bov from factory and ran fine, so Id say very minimal effect on the life span of the turbo if any at all.

I bet someone told you it was 'wastegate flutter' and thats why you want an external wastegate :) , if so hit them over the head.

Go to www.howstuffworks.com look up turbos and wastegates on there, it gives a very easy to understand basic explanation of how it all works. Great website for learning the basics.

A dealership told you that it was wastegate flutter?

Youd think that someone that deals with cars would at least have a clue how they work.

I disagree here. Dealers usually don't know anything. Same as the "guys at super cheapbarn".

Mid 90's it was always "the guys at harvey norman said x about my computer".

I went down to the specialist and he said it is imposiable to get this noise but i think hes full of S&^T because i have a mate that has a external wastegate coming out of his turbo that makes this noise, but if i have to replace a turbo to get it i say no thanks =O ill just keep my skyline and buy a gtr in a year or so.

Did you even read what we said? its not the wastegate, its from having no bov and a pod.

Its frustrating when you tell someone something and they completely ignore you.

    • Just bought a 2002 Stagea 250tRS VR-X Four AERO VQ25DET and spent the last two weekends cleaning and detailing it.. still have to do the wheels and the engine bay but the rest of it came up nice. Imported 2011 to S.A. and I'm the third owner since it was imported. I met the guy who brought it over, he went to Japan and picked out the car, bought it and ordered the wheels. He also gave me a list of stuff he did to the car with receipts. Coil overs (I have the original springs), 3" exhaust from the dump pipe back no cat, Custom dump pipe,(I have the original exhaust), Plenum spacer, 18" custom Work XSA wheels (need restoring, I've made a start..), Shift kit put through the 5 speed tiptronic auto, TV and menus/screens changed to english, Australian DTV tuner installed in rear. I've just had four new discs and new pads as well as all the fluids including the brake fluid replaced. I have all the receipts for the last 15 years and the import papers in a nice folder. Car looks great, goes like hell but fuel economy is not a thing lol.. pics next..
    • I ended up in this rut again lol, and used a shit ton of filler. One thing I can't understand is, even after using a big long block and going in long X pattern strokes, I always end up at bare metal again with no filler, and my repair started at one end of the door and now I've chased my tail to almost the other end of the door. I was thinking of hitting the panel with a hammer where it might be a high spot and making everything low then filling it, I did this on a small section on my other door by mistake and I think I fixed it lol. Is this a bad idea? The other thing is with guidecoat, whether it's the powder or spray, after I sand all the guide coat off, it doesn't reveal anything for me in terms of high spots and low spots and makes it especially hard when it's bare metal (at least in powdered form), am I doing something wrong here, or likely a high spot I keep going over and creating valleys? Lastly, stupid question but, is it possible that after sanding if I only sand over the filler area where I know to be a dent that it's impossible for me to dig into that dent? Unless there are other problems which I missed.
    • Yeah the rule of thumb with an LS is 7psi per 1000rpm. That is decidedly not enough at 6800rpm. I mainly looked for the scenarios where knock started to be picked up and it was later in the session when things were hotter, and oil was thinner, and the pressure was lower than it should be. (i.e very horrible). I am hoping with thicker oil (I was running Penrite ten tenths 10-40, the manual specifies 10-30) that does not leak that it's much improved at that time!!! I am using Project Mu Club Racer CR pads. I'm also using the Project Mu 335C fluid. The symptoms imply that it was fluid that boiled, but no bubbles seemed pretty weird to me when I bled it today. I want to try Castrol SRF as it has a much higher wet temp but, well, I have new Project Mu fluid lol... so I should at least use that. The pedal on track was really noticable. It went from basically normal feeling to instantly near-floor. The car did pull up as before, it was just very much nearly at the floor before the brakes engaged. At that point I pretty much decided the day was very done, it did *kinda* come back during that very slow cooldown lap into the pits. Felt perfectly fine driving home.
