Hmmm, could work its way off, might be tight fit now but on a warm day travling along the freeway at 110 km/h gearbox gets hot. But I'm lazy so I'd probably do the same

Yeah, i know what you mean. I was actually a bit more concerned about a circlip working its way off a groove that i fabricated. The one that broke in my car didnt move at all. The shaft actually snapped inside the sender assembly. Too late now anyway; i put the box back in today.

Considering the circlip design used on the r33 drive is the odd ball of the family and the rest of the drives use an interference fit with some kind of adhesive i think you'll be fine.

Mine hasn't caused any problems yet and it regularly sees track work and speeds in excess of 180km/h.

I started my car today and noticed that the speedo needle was jumping slightly at about 20km/hr (thats as fast as i could go while the car was on stands). Im a bit dissappointed about this as i think it might suggest that the gear might be under unwanted force or something. What do you guys reckon?

There arent any sharp bends in the speedo cable either, which would also make the needle jump.

The standard x-member bolts up to it.

3 bolts + 1 nut + locktight in total are required.

Sweet, so just two plates, and stock R32 x member and your done.

So your pritty much just conecting the gear box to one of the original body bolt holes and using the plates for extra strength.

Thats it.

The plate is there for 2 reasons.. To space the box down a touch so it doesn't foul the tunnel and to provide a little extra stability to the xmember as when you only use one of the origional bolt holes the back of the xmember hangs off the floor pan. Thats where the plate provides support for it.

Almost finished the conversion today, only have to put the speedo sender in and extend a wire for one of the sensors that plug into the box.

For the plates i chose not to space the gearbox down as it wasnt close to fouling and i didnt want to put the box on any bad angles.

I cut away some of the crossmember and fitted the plates underneath. I also welded them in, i then trimmed the bits i cut out and refitted them in also by welding. I then ground them back for a nice look and painted it all black. Pics tomorrrow :D

The tailshaft left this monring for universal driveshafts in geebung (qld) the guys did a perfect job swapping over the yokes, and obviously balanced it before it was retured at 445 today :/ very happy with the service and price which was $175

Thats it.

Feel like drawing it up with measurments so I can copy it?

I wont be dropping my engine and gearbox in till late april early may so I wont be able to verify if your plate fits the same on each car but its worth checking so future people dont have to messure their own.

Thats strange as I found the top of the gearbox snagged the floor pan with the xmember around 2mm away from the floor pan. So I was forced to space it away. :S

Did you massage the floor pan a touch?

Hey joel,

i have the xmember bolted to the car, no spacing. I didnt touch the tunnel/floor pan at all, the box fitted in great. I do have a hoist and gearbox lifter tho :)

    • That's probably OK. That's a face to face compression joint between two surfaces with the clamping load provided by those bolts. So.... it's unlikely that the bolts will end up feeling that load in shear, unless the clamping surfaces are not large enough, bolts not got enough tension on them, etc etc to prevent the two faces from moving wrt each other. Which... I would hope the designers have considered, seeing as it's probably one of the most important things the upright has to do apart from resist collapsing in its own right. But yes, it would definitely be worth asking them what their safety factor on that part of the design was. I tend to think that the casting, being a casting, is not necessarily the strongest bit of material in the world. It's about an inch square, and when you think about the loads that are being put into it, you have to wonder what safety factor the Nissan boys (and every other OEM engineer who has designed all the millions of other uprights that look essentially the same) used to account for defective casting, aging, severe impacts on the wheel, etc etc.
    • Those bolts would be orders of magnitude stronger that cast aluminium though.  And its mainly clamping force, not shear they are dealing with?
    • Except all that twisting force that is breaking a cast piece, appears to be going through 4 bolts in the picture Johnny posted of the BryPar one...
    • The smart approach is to use the gearbox loom from the manual car. Makes it a lot easier - just plugs into the switches on the box and plugs into the main loom up near the fusebox. Then you only need to deal with bypassing the inhibit switch. The other approach requires you to use the wiring diagram to identify those wires by colour and location, perhaps even indulging in a little multimeter action to trace them end to end to make sure, and then.... you will have the answers you need. The R34 wiring diagram is available on-line (no, I do not have a link to it myself - I would have to do a search if I wasn't able to go to the copy I have at home).
    • Hi, i’m converted my r34 4dr auto to manual but need help with gearbox wiring. There are bunch of wires no idea which one for speedo drive, neutral, reverse can anyone help me. IMG_6860.mov
