Just wondering if anyone has experienced an oil cooler getting an internal leak & letting oil into the coolant circuit?

I suspect thats were mine has gone.

Forgot to mention that it had a rebuild 15,000k's ago & had a Tomei head gasket installed, compression check came up good & all the studs are still at the torque setting they were initially set at.

And that there is no trace of water in the oil i dumped from the sump.

Only found approx 2-3 teaspoons in the top of the overflow bottle & under radiator cap.

Car was running faultlessly it was just that each & every time i take it out i check the oil, water ,brake & clutch fluid ,& this time found a nasty.

will have the cooler plate made up tomorrow & pressure test it again then & post the results here.

Well low & behold the oil cooler has a crack or pin hole inside & when under 50psi of pressure & at temp of approx 85c the cooler would produce a minute bubble every 15-30 seconds, but would not do this when at room temperature.

And Nissan Australia are asking $480 for a new cooler.

Might just go aftermarket.

Does anyone no

1.Approx wat pressure drop in oil pressure do you get when adding an external cooler e.g ARC Oil Cooler?

2.Does the cooler-adapter plate bolt up in place of the stock cooler or does it use a sandwich plate arrangement?

I didn't realise you were talking about the stock oil cooler down where the oil filter connects.

I bet you there are bunches of them in peoples garages from dead engines etc. What about people who went RB30 bottom end and have their RB25 bottom end sitting around gathering dust?

plus you want the stock oil cooler as it helps get some temp into things quickly by exchanging heat between the oil and coolant.

i have experienced bugger all pressure drop with my greddy oil cooler.

Thanks ,yeh it sure was that oil-cooler letting the oil into the radiator.

Know to get a new cooler & an aftermarket one for those track days,if i ever get to go!

Anyone got contacts in japan to get the oil cooler direct from Nissan over there?

Can't believe my luck with this ,but keep thinking how lucky i was not to loose the engine altogether.

no! don't do it!

those coolers are impossible to clean out properly, if you have one from a motor with a spun bearing or other crap in the oil toss it out....other wise you are just putting bits into your nice new motor.

They are about 400 brand new from nissan

nah as stated u run the risk of contaminating the new engine for $475 for a new one i dont think it's worth risking it.

Have tried cleaning oil coolers before & u never seem to be able to stop getting little bits of shit coming out of them.

    • Ha ha ha, that's fair mate! We have the crackhead dogs now. Mainly because the missus wants the crazy dogs while she still has the energy and capacity to be able to keep up with them! Ha ha our current two are both Working GSD, there brothers and sisters (from the same litters) are in Police, Corrective Services, and I believe one did end up in defence force too. They're wild and fun, yet right now, both curled up asleep on the lounge room floor while we watch some TV. Mal is very likely the next dog (unless I get my couch potato guardian dog 😛 )   What are your Kitties names? Are you planning some house work, like those high kitty shelves, built in scratching post, and some cat passages from one room to another room?
    • Maine Coone, did look at but to big and fluffy As for performance dogs, we had Mals at work, performance dogs are fun to watch, but, way to much work for this old rooster
    • Yep, it was only an option on the Q50 Hybrid.  Same in Japan as far as I know. And doesn't use a centre diff like the Suby's do, so not the same as the WRX.  But it also isn't a reactive AWD like other Nissan AWD vehicles are, eg. Murano/Xtrail/etc.
    • You should have got a Maine Coone then. Only thing is they're big. But so cool, and just like a dog. Or, just get yourself a high performance dog. That'll teach you for wanting Parkour indoors 😛
    • Are you thinking of Bens R32? I don't remember if his went through the bonnet itself, but it went through the chassis rail. Brad (RISKIN) bought it, and turned it into a track car. It's funny how anti people are of Jim Berry now. I remember when I pulled mine out (during an engine change) and inspected it and found it cracking badly. At that point in time so many people were even on SAU, were so pro Jim Berry, and that was after Bens GTR exploded his quite publically.
