Dropped my car in to Belconnen Discount Tyre Service this morning, and amongst other things whilst chatting with Mark (top bloke, really knows his shit) i saw my new 255/35/R18 Dunlop SP Sport MAXX's off the rims.

WTF

They are f**king huge. I mean, i used to look behind Boxsters and 911's and go, wow they are big tyres - f**k no move over. By Huge i mean they are comparable to my Forearm (i'm 6 foot 3).

Also got him doing a wheel alignment and looking over the suspension to see whats there, if any of the bushes are shagged and grease it up.

Top bloke - knows what he's on about, owns a Stagea, and will look after you.

tires arent cheap, 300ish for Federals the new type and they are quite good. Except now i am wheelspinning coming on boost in second might need some new ones.

$430 ea for Dunlop SP Sport MAXX's, 255/35/r18, to put things in perspective, the fronts (235/40/R18) will only be $315ea.

wider tyres = more drag on long journeys = increased fuel consumption.

you should have thinner tyres for everyday driving and just use the wide ones for track days. better yet get semi-slicks :rofl:

I'm actually in a bit of a pickle at the moment in regards to rims;

I want a new set of rims but I'm not keen on dropping down tyre width from 255 to 235s which most rims these days seem to take.

Is there really that much difference when it comes to tyre width?? Obviously the more tread I have the better grip I get and fuel consumption isn't really a concern of mine but is 20mm going to really impact me?

Depends on the quality of the tyre you're using I reckon.

The cost of an 'ordinary' 255 width tyre might be the same as a really good 235 width tyre. The 255/40ZR17 Nexen N3000's that came with my mags when I bought them are nothing short of utter shite at the retail cost of $190 each, which is cheap for any brand's "top of the line" tyre. As a (bad) comparison, the 225/50ZR16 Falken Ziex 512 tyres I had on my old 16's absolutely shat on these Nexens from a rather great height in every way.

Even the 205/50R16 Vredestein Sportrac 2's I had on the front 16's had much better handling than the 225 Nexens I have now.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is instead of spending money on a new set of wheels with some normal tyres, get some decent tyres for the mags you have and you might end up better off.

I'm fairly sure that the wider the tyre you using on the front will give you heavier steering, which you may or may not want. I quite liked the difference in steering feel my car had when I went from a 205 to a 225.

Honestly it depends on the tyre.

If you go from say nankings or hankook k104's or nexens, to say High end dunlop, yoko, goodyear stuff - irregardless of size, you will notice a world of difference, assuming you have it properly aligned.

The New Dunlop SP Sport Maxx's i have on my rears are unbelievable for traction even though they are barely scrubbed in. Even over the K104's i had before they started doing scrubbing problems.

I remember the red widebody R33 GTS-T that Parvis used to have in the F&F imports showroom(the old location)that had 335 section tyres... F**K me;huge!

That car was a beast... And we actually took the rear wheel off the car..

IT was SOOO BIG!!!!!! The front wheels were a 10 inch rim, and the rear was 12.5 i believe!!!!

for the price of a set of 255s you can get much better 235s, as bluprint is suggesting. this is particularly the case since commondoors take 235s and the economy of scale makes them cheaper. add far wider choice and it's a win both ways. add to that less tramlining and smoother ride; unless you're dragging, in which case wider might always be better, i'd rather go for good 235 than an average or unknown 255 anyday. just my 2c.

    • @GTSBoy Ok so that was the shops problem...they showed R33 rotors on R34 page and i did not know 296 do not fit(and are for R33) Yes i bought "kit" with rotors and pads. Pads are ok(i have GTT calipers front and rear). They have some 324mm but no 310mm. So i dont know if they would fit. I have 17inch LMGT4s So another question. Can i fit those in the rear or they are just "too" big for that?
    • I started removing the tank a while back with the intent to give it a proper clean. Got to a bolt that I couldn't undo completely due to a diff being in the way, so just said f**k it and siphoned the gluggy old fuel out and called it a day. Looking it the tank it looks less corroded than the one in the pics for that billet hanger from Frenchy's anyway. Isn't it the fuel filters job to worry about this stuff? I scraped off most the crusty shit of the hanger but will give it another go before reinstall coz maybe the fuel and return pipes are also full of gunk  
    • Pretty sure it is a common fault. I believe this is the only part you need, but don't quote me as I don't have a V36.  I also believe it is a bit of a pain to change and the device needs to be encoded to the car once it is replaced, so may need someone with the right tools.     • Pads for R32 GTS-t, R32 GT-R non V-Spec (Sumitomo), R33 GTS-t and R34 GT-t are all interchangeable. R34 GT uses a 2x piston caliper, hence it didn't fit.
    • Checked with amayama and nope, the full S2 manual set is not available anymore. Unsurprising, but still disappointing as the ? on availability gave a glimmer of hope.
