Hi all,

Im looking to get my first Skyline so I went to Power Road Car Sales on sat afternoon and came accross this great looking Series II Skyline Its done 84,000kms, comes with 17" nismo wheels that are apparently worth $3000 (he said its a double wheel and it can be repaired) no Idea what he's talking about but it looks cool :) Its going for $18,000 inc road worthy, stamp duty and all that other rubbish.

Its got a scratch on the front bumper, rear bumper and the left hand light lense is a bit worn. They said that they will fix all of that when I get the car and the only reason they show the car like that is because they want you to see what it looks like straight from japan.

I asked the guy If it has had a compression test etc.. and he said it has its getting 20 psi on all cylinders (I dont know if thats good or bad) but if it has done all those tests is there supose to be paper work to prove it?

its got service records from japan too.

So what do you guys think of this?

Is it really worth $18,000, my budget was $15,000 but this car just looks so good.

isnt 20 really low? arnt they spose to be around the 130+?

nice car. but really think u should negotiate on that price. might want to check out the for sale section people are selling from 15k!

and those km's prob arnt legit anyway lol

hanyou its done 84 not 20, so you guys reckon 84,000kms is BS? how so?

what about the compression thing is 20psi good?

just go by the general condition of the car/engine , km don't mean anything.

Compression test on a good engine should give results somewhere between 150-170psi and all cylinders should give fairly similar numbers. see this thread for example:

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...=136725&hl=

So first of I would be asking to see the results of the compression test as 20psi isn't correct. Also find out what he means by "he said its a double wheel and it can be repaired" if one or more of the wheels are buckled even though they can be fixed it's a major pain in the ass as fixing them doesn't always help that much, normally the steering wheel will vibrate round 80-120km/h depending on how bad it is.

As for the k's completley ignore them, they are never correct. Look at general wear and tear on the car, drivers seat on the door side, carpet around the clutch and accelerator pedal, the plastic around the bin in the drivers door arm rest, the material on the inside of the bonnet and the condition of the paint on and around the engine I always find are good indications of the cars use.

Otherwise car looks good, just do some bargning to get the price down a bit :)

Interloper how do I tell if the engine is in good condition? I dont know much about cars. I like Atreyu car. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...=131922&hl=

Is Atreyu's car in good condition? Ive told my dad about Atreyu's car but he thinks the car has been thrashed. Ive told him we can go check it out at a performance mechanic but he still dosent trust it.

20 psi is not good. 120psi is also not good so perhaps the salesman has no idea. Always take your car to a 3rd party for inspection. What Kyle has mentioned above is good info.

With that mileage, and that damage the car is simply overpriced.

Also, at risk of offending your dad, sounds like has doesn't have much of an idea as well if he can tell a car is "thrashed" from a few photos. Get an RACV inspection on any car you want if you aren't mechanically minded. An example, I have a 94 GTS25t I have run on the track. It's now twin turbo and has so many improvements it would take too long to list them and I'm about to rebuild the engine again and the gearbox syncros before doing a few more track days. I'll be selling it for a dedicated race car instead so you could say, yes, it has been thrashed and will continue to be thrashed around the track, but also lovingly and expertly maintained by a serious racer who just happens to be a very good mechanic and a mechanical engineer. Attention to detail is the difference and it will be so much more than an 8-10yo car that has been grannied around by some sook with a degree in hair product. Hope that offers some perspective.

I think you would do much better with a private sale and Atreyu's sounds good if that is more what you are after.

the compression test is a good place to start also do a leakdown test to reveal any problems. Also don't use racv, go to a performance mechanic who knows what to look for and what he's doing. I went to racv a few years ago and i was very dissapointed :) (plus they charge $320 for an inspection)

maybe he meant the difference between max and min was 20....which would make more sense.

instead of debating just ask him for the results...and yes its if it is 20 you can easily tell with a quick drive...it will be farked.

milage is bs...you can get clusters from Japan and ebay aus easily...cost me less than $100 for a 74,000km one And the service reocrds are a bit dodgy IMO also...doens't mean anything unless u can check it.

By double rims he would have meant "two piece rims" that is it is made from two separate pieces, the round bit with the tyre on it and the bit that attaches to the car.

    • I was 99% sure the standard one is long enough to get there, you might just have to change the throttle orientation. If not, I remember someone having used an r31 cable instead, but that is probably harder to find than r33 by now...
    • HELP   Hey all, Is there an accelerator cable from another Nissan that can be used on the R33 GTST RB25DET with a Greddy forward facing plenum?  Thanks in advance  Rob
    • Or do we think it was installed to give 1 bar of boost max, all day, everyday?
    • So could it be assumed it has been installed intentionally with potentially a power FC boost controller kit?
    • Had my rig on Matt's dyno at PITS the other day. After a few years between tunes I added a few sensors and swapped intercoolers. Result. 553hp at 26psi. Not bad for an FJ20 that was built in 2007. The problem.. It filled the overflow bottle on hard runs which leads me to believe the head gasket isn't sealing. I have a coolant pressure sensor which was reading cap pressure at 22psi and occasionally overrunning to 23/24 psi on deceleration after a pull. It was not spiking. It has arp2000 head studs and a cometic gasket. As its been 18 years in service, I pulled the engine out and head off. Everything looks good but we obviously have an issue. Where I'm at.. Years ago I had the same issue, I checked the stud tension and they were all over the place. Some at 60 to 70 and some up near 90. I nipped them all to 100ft lbs and this stopped the water push until now. I believe this compromised the gasket back then. What do I do? 2 options are..  1) I bought arp 625+s, which I could put in with a new gasket. Thinking Kameari this time, reassemble and try again. 2) strip the block, get fire rings machined in with copper gasket and try that. I do not want to push it more than 28 to 30psi. I think the turbo will be out by then anyway. (G30-770). My other concern is the long term ability of a copper head gasket. Are they streetable for years? I feel like a new gasket with the new studs will probably suffice, but I don't know. Any thoughts welcome and advice on copper gaskets and fire rings. Thanks!
