hey guys

short storey / question is:

brothers got an r32gtst and its having a chronic steering wheel shaking above 110km/h.

could the tail shaft / tail shaft universal joints becausing this?

long storey is;

he's had it balanced and aligned by 3-4 ppl, had joints / bushes etc changed, spent over $1k in suspension parts with no effect.

and he does regular driving on highways, the wobbling / shaking is bad enough to cause pain and numbness after an hour or so, so its bad.

i pulled out the tail shaft but i'm no mechanic to know if theres anything wrong with it, 2 of the uni joints seemed to like to 'click' into the central position, i'm not sure if this is normal or not

i know you can get 1 piece tailshafts made but its $500 more that does not want ot be spent if it doesnt fix the problem, does anyone have advice / similar situation experiences?

anyone know of a tailshaft / gearbox place that would look at the shaft and give an honest opinion if its dead or could be causing vibrations? thanks for any help :(

and they have been taken off and balanced by 3 places at least

The balancing won't do crap if the tyres are warped.. and may actually still balance ok. I've had that before on another car. Peeved me off no end for 6 months until I tried a different set of rims as a last resort.

My guess is that it wouldn't be the tail shaft through the steering.. rest of the car, sure, but tailshaft goes from engine -> gearbox -> diff.. the rack isn't involved.

Spot on gordo!

I had a dodgy tailshaft after my gearbox conversion. You feel it thru the bottom of the seat and in your back.

I've also had egged tyres on the car, that you feel, and there is nothing you can do about it. A balance wont pick it up as its not a weight difference in the tyre or wheel. My bet is the tyres.

My tail shaft uni joint is shot to hell in my commodore. It shakes the steering wheel to the shit house.

Change the uni joint. Problem gone.

uni joint approx: $15 from Repco.

My dad has also had many uni joints go, with EXACT same problem. If he gets on the gas, and the shaking disappears, it's definetely tail shaft.

i am in the middle of sorting a similar problem out myself i have replaced the rear half of the 2 piece tailshaft but have not balanced it yet with the front half, so im not 100% sure if this is the problem or not. but i am in the process of replacing all suspesion components including steering rack mount, radius bushes, front and rear camber adjustables.... then full wheel alignment, im going to see if this has any affect on the cars driving, if not im going to start with the tailshaft balance then maybe a steering rack overhaul if they think its needed. suck but there is nothing i can do about it but try to eliminate the sources 1 by 1.

imchecking all the little thing slike tyres aswell on the way but going to wait till after wednesday to see when it all gets done.

turns out the joints couldnt be serviced cheaply

got a new one piece tailshaft

brother reports that the problem is worst then before?

he is now going to sell the car

took me 2-3 years to convince him he needed boost. now this happens :(

he had the wheels balanced and aligned again

had 3 different people confirm that the suspension is tight as

no one knows whast the go now....

i'll see if i can get a mate to swap all 4 wheels / tyres this w/e and see if that makes any diff...

it's been alinged like 4-5 times recently, it was done today even

i plan on changing all the tyres / rims on it this w/e hopefulllly

i'm assuming the tailshaft was balanced before putting in, they custom made it and the place brags to make them for gtr drag skylines so you'd think they'd make on that can go over 100km/h with no worries :

Is the steeering rack securely fitted? Bolts tight? Bushes not worn?

My old R31 had stuffed steering rack bushes and the bolts kept coming loose. Maybe check that.

Also check your front hubs don't have excessive runout. You can check that with a dial indicator.

Could be a front wheel bearing problem?

Has the car got any evidence of being in an accident?

Flat spots in the tyres FTW.

When I bought my car it had the shakes real bad over 100km/h. Turned out the previous owner had locked it up just before I picked it up. No amount of balancing fixed the problem...had to go 4 new tyres.

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
